I am pretty sure we were below the tax threshold.

Supposedly we were going to get a legit closer for 2026. But the closer market seems to be moving quickly this off-season with several big name free agent closers already spoken for, including Suarez just today (Diaz yesterday).

Prelim list came out yesterday (not final, but likely) and we were above.

(Note: These classifications will not be finalized until payrolls are final on Dec. 2, 2025.)

The Sportrac link says it is "real time", so the question is, which list is more recent?

The heading says that is for 25-26 offseason, so I assume pretty up to date. Also, Newberg said it was just populated a few days ago.

Pete Alonso but that ship sailed yesterday.

Steven Kwan is a good LH bat and LF. That is my 2nd move.

If you click on the article it says that Hoby Milner likely headed to the Cubs, but not officially announced yet.

I had read that he was wanting/hoping to stay in Texas, being that he is from Texas. Guess it didn't work out.

We've got a catcher and maybe a reliever.

In addition to signing catcher Danny Jansen to a two-year, $14.5 million contract, the Texas Rangers are also in agreement on one-year contracts with right-handed reliever Alexis Daz and left-hander Tyler Alexander, sources tell ESPN.

So we cut Jonah Heim, only to sign...Jonah Heim. Same age, same salary, same offensive numbers. Maybe I'm missing some nuance, but guessing there were some clubhouse issues. Jonah looked like he'd rather be somewhere else at times.

Stats are very similar. Jansen better defensively?

Elite pitch blocker. Average catcher. Not a starter. This is what we were talking about. Starting catchers who can play offense and defense don't grow on trees. Bottom line is they were tired of Heim.

Makes sense.

Man I remember Diaz being an absolute animal for the Reds, he fell off super quick. Hope he can bounce back with us.

Jansen had almost 3 WAR last year but mostly on D. (Heim was .7). He's an upgrade over 24/25 Heim but not 23. Catching will not be a strength.

Diaz is a flyer but as said hasn't been good for two years. I have no idea if it was injury related or not.

Alexander is a dart throw. This group did a good job in the bullpen bargain bin last year so we'll see.

Heim is about twice the GiDP threat. Jansen has a career .311 OBP, Heim .282. Definitely an upgrade if he's healthy, but like you said, an upgrade from the trend for sure. Our 2 veteran catchers are about $13M/year total. I don't know if any other team is paying 2 catchers starter money.
cmiller00

Heim was expected to get around $6MM in arb so not much more incremental dollars for hopefully an upgrade. Also ensures you don't go into 27 without a catcher.

Edited to add if we are lucky Moore is ready to contribute in 27.

I feel like at this point, Moore is a complete bust. Has shown nothing so far that indicates he will every play a Major League game, let alone hold hold down a spot longer than Justin Foscue
DannyDuberstein
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
Well, he's 21 and basically played half of a season in the minors, and that half was after missing the first half from a broken hand on a foul tip. Jury is very much out on him. 2026 will be more telling. He won't be here in 2027, but I would not write him off as a prospect by any means
cmiller00
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
Yeah 2027 is probably pushing it especially for a catcher. Too early to write him off. IIRC they were impressed with his defensive improvements by the end of last year. Serviceable hitter and good defense will get a call as a backup.

Still surprised we drafted him. Never seemed like he had a very high ceiling.

Organizationally, the Rangers have pi$$ed away a lot of high draft picks.

Little premature for that.

The Rangers trading prospects away for Kelly then the D-Backs resigning him is a brutal look imo. I'm questioning this front office more and more. At least they have trading Semien as feather in their cap.

Cant be said enough how awful the Rangers are and have been at drafting and developing talent.

Probably not but everyone and their mother could tell that we were not making the playoffs or doing anything in it. There was no reason to make that trade.

I thought that trade was a head scratcher at the time and commented on it. Wasn't an area of need.
