Answering my own question - it does. Against 25 yo WC Marina Bassols from Spain.

Kori won yesterday in a Junior tournament in Montreal: 6-0, 6-2 in singles and 6-2, 6-2 in doubles.

Carson wins, advances.

7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 6-4.

It was back and forth a lot today. Just a few points away from winning the 2nd set but did not work out. Plays the #5 seed next.

Noticed just now the roster is at 12thman.com, not sure when it appeared.

Shows Lizanne Boyer. Pretty sure she transferred. Does not show pics or stats for any of the new players but those will eventually show up.

Did she come back? We can have 10 scholarships, can't we?

I am pretty darn sure she is gone but let one of the 'insiders' on here confirm it. I vaguely recall she transferred to SMU and that made sense at the time because she is from Highland Park but did a quick search and it shows she went to Santa Clara.

Last year's roster page was probably used as a template for this year and she was probably just 'missed' when it was updated and was left on.

SOOO, I think we are still at 9 on the roster with one scholarship open.

You are thinking of Ellie Pittman.

I thought Lizanne was transferring to Santa Clara.

As I recall, at one point last year the ncaa said 10 scholarships and the SEC said 9 (men would be one less for each) . They also said a roster spot was the same as a scholarship. Georgia's updated roster has eleven.

They can have more than the roster limit if they were "cut"

Carson wins again, in the Challenger tournament in Spain (clay). She defeated #5 seed Julia Grabher from Austria 6-1, 6-4 and moves on to the quarterfinals against #4 seed Darja Semenistaja, a 22 year old from Latvia.

Darn, Carson falls to Semenistaja 4-6, 4-6.

Still, great to get to the quarterfinals in a Challenger tournament !!

I'm pretty sure, based on what I was told last spring, that Liz was given a scholarship for the Spring of last year. I don't know if Mark continued that for this fall, but i'd be surprised since she announced she would be transferring. He wouldn't handcuff himself like that.

Must resist scouring the internet for possible 11+ UTR transfers and international players.

National signing day is only about three months away and we lose some outstanding talent after this year so I am sure the coaching staff is really 'scouring' away already. Heck, they probably do it all year.

Sooo, you should be able to resist the desire knowing our excellent coaching staff is doing it for you.

I enjoy recruiting and evaluating the overall college tennis landscape almost as much as the season.

There's a reason recruiting has become a big business in football. We need year round interest and engagement in college tennis. I worry about it's long term sustainability. I don't think a sit back and relax mentality is in the best interest of the sport or our program.

I'll keep watching the tournaments, following the results, listening to the podcasts, debating with friends, hoping player x or y chooses A&M, donating to the program, etc.

But I promise I won't show up to Mark's office with a manila folder full of suggestions.

LOL, I believe wholeheartedly that that is the LAST thing Mark, James or Tommy need from any of us. I have to believe that they have their finger on the pulse of all that's available. The spring before Mary showed up Mark comes over to me and says, "We have just gotten verbal commitment from a girl whose going to be even better than CSQ." And I'll be dog, he was exactly right. My father could look at an animal and know instantly if that animal would ever have a chance in the show ring, and he was right way over 90% of the time. Mark I believe has the same gift to see young women being able to develop in top notch players and PEOPLE that we would all be proud of.

Frankie, Bobby K made the comment one time that he is talking to potential talent literally every day of the year. It's just heavier at certain times of the year.

Are you referring to my manila folder joke?

It was my way of saying that obviously Mark knows what he is doing but the more interest and passion around college tennis and the program, the better.

Debate over a third string QBs throwing mechanics is what makes college sports great. We need that passion in college tennis.

I should have put a smiley face after my comment about not needing to search for talent yourself and that the awesome staff is doing it every day. The 'scouring' part was tongue-in-cheek and the staff for all sports is always on the look out for talent. And I am sure it ramps up before signing day and when the transfer portal times are approaching.

I had a great smile when you wrote that you would not show up at Mark's office with a folder full of suggestions because I almost wrote that one of us should do that !!

One of the reasons I really dig the tennis threads is that you guys know a LOT more about tennis in general and Aggie tennis in particular than I do so I learn a LOT just by reading what you guys write - thank you !!

The most I generally do is look at the ranking sites for HS players and read about the higher ranked ones. Great at singles or doubles or both? Are they committed somewhere? Etc.

HOWEVER, because the transfer portal has changed college sports so darn much looking at rankings and stats of college players is just as important as HS talent so I am slowly doing that, too.

AND, and I am REALLY excited about this, we are only six days away from the first tournament !!!!!

Thank you - appreciate your enthusiasm on the board!

BTW, I didn't take your well meaning comment personally. I just like to debate and add activity to the board in hopes of increased engagement.
frankie00
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Not to worry, I do not take anything personally. I am too old to get excited over things like that. But thanks for your concern! Gosh, all the regulars on this thread are awesome and I dig the back and forth a LOT. And it IS cool to see new people pop up now and again. Getting them to be regulars like I became is certainly a worthwhile goal. Having an excellent team and outstanding coaches sure does help!

I AM surprised that with the first tourney just a few days away there have not been suggested lineups on this thread. Since I am still just an amateur I will not put down names but I think I have a pretty good idea about 1-3 (in singles) but with the new talent I do not know how 4-6 will go. Who, I can guess, but in what order?

Doubles? This is a hard one. Chemistry between players, for one, makes 'guessing' difficult because I have no idea how different pairs have been working out in practice. And the new players added to the mix really increases the options! Perhaps a returning player and a new player really mesh well, well enough to be line 1. AND, it would be really cool to be a 'fly on the wall' in the room when the coaches are talking things over!

Anyway, I am really looking forward to another season of Aggie tennis - whoop !!

Gig 'Em !!!!!

Whilst checking out results from last year's opening tournament, the H-E-B Invitational in Waco (Sep 20-22), saw these:

Daria Smetannikov (Texas A&M) def. Violeta Martinez (ILL) 6-1, 6-2

Kida Ferarri/Violeta Martinez (ILL) def. Daria Smetannikov/Lexington Reed (Texas A&M) 6-1

Hmmm, I wonder if Daria, Lex and Vi talked about these matches after Vi showed up on campus?

Only a few more days until the Rice Invitational !!

Wrote just a few minutes ago about the W35. Have commented before about it being great that A&M supports their players competing in pro tournaments and how this helps with recruiting. Heck, it can only make the players better and that certainly helps the team.

My question for you guys - how common is this in this country? Do most (or all) of the big tennis programs do the same thing? I could see where some would support only upperclassmen.

Just curious !!

Thanks !!

Yes - I do think most of the top girls play quite a bit across the country, but I know (or at least I'm assuming) that we cover entry fees for our top girls for these tournaments. I'm not sure how common that is. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
