Almost certainly a western rat snake based on size and location. Completely harmless to your wife. Not harmless to chicks/eggs.

Oh yes definitely a rat snake considering it was in the rafters.

A short time later I learned that there are somehow three of them in that picture.

To be fair, I don't think the third is visible in the photo, but it's there.

I didn't see the second one until my buddy pointed him out. We didn't see the third immediately either. And they were all within a few feet of each other. It's crazy how well they blend in.

Like I said, I can't believe I didn't get bit. My hand was six inches from the obvious one. Good thing the weather was cool.

I should have been more clear. The snake is dead. Another golfer killed it with a 6-iron as we were walking up on it.
