The reason there is inter generational arrow slinging is directly due to the reaction by the vast majority of the older population to this topic. Just look at this thread and how many boomers have completely written off the legitimate complaints brought up by the younger generations. It's essentially all of them. Their failure to recognize real, legitimate issues facing the young white people today is a very significant problem.

And I would say to you that I am beyond tired of the boomer blame game. There is no recognition from the boomer blamers for the struggles that generation had to overcome. That's the point you don't seem to get. It's just "you had it easy" or "you screwed us" or whatever. It comes across as whining and refusing to take ownership for your generation's destiny, just like all the ones before you. I don't have any patience for it.

If we want to talk about real problems and potential solutions, I'm all in. But not interested in whining or blaming.

Ok, a "real problem" is that we are in a financial train wreck. A "real solution" is stop giving tax cuts/special carve outs like the one this thread is about.

I have not whined or blamed anyone, outside of wanting the older generation to recognize and admit that there are significant road blocks to young white men becoming successful in the country now. You are ascribing things to me that I have not stated.

I didn't mean for my comments to be ascribed to you personally, but your generation instead. Using the word "you" broadly.

I agree on the challenges for young white men to a degree, but I don't linger on it for long. Anybody who does is falling into victim mentality. Gotta shake it off and overcome. There are many young white men out there today that are kicking ass and don't let potential constraints stop them.

Edit to add: in addition to shaking off the victim mentality, we need to ruthlessly eradicate DEI in all of its forms. Trump gets an A+ from me on that front.

And if you'll read my first couple posts in this thread, I agree with you. I hate the government picking winners and losers. Should treat everybody the same.

Recognizing the issues and discussing them in the hopes that more people open their eyes to the issues is not falling in to a victim mentality. Sure, there are plenty of young white men that have overcome , but there are plenty more who have not been able to get a leg up and suffer in silence. The vast majority of the whining I see on this topic anyways is from young POCs who were raised with an entitlement attitude anyways. There definitely is a large sunset of young white men who bring this issue up regularly, but most of the ones that I see doing so are doing so because it is an extremely important issue, one of the most important in the country right now.

I'm successful, I will still rail on this all the time. What has been done to young white men (and older, as discussed) in this country over the last 40 years is absolutely abhorrent. They truly are the backbone of the country, and not all the ******ed types our govt tries to gaslight us in to believing are the true strength of the country.

Here's the issue, as I see it. Boomers that planned, saved, and invested prudently won't get that tax break. And that's how it should be.

... and that is a huge pile of crap. SS was created before boomers were even born, and most of them are now retired. Those that worked paid into SS just like their parents. Many of them were of voting age the last time SS was reformed in the mid 80's to increase retirement ages to strengthen the long term viability of SS.

What has your generation done to improve SS? And those younger than you?

Nothing. Nada. Zilch.

You've had plenty of opportunity to band together and insist that legislators improve the system, but you haven't done it. All you do is point at people older than you and blame them or suggest that they should voluntarily decline their benefits out of some asinine sense of "civic virtue."

Why haven't YOU done anything to improve the situation? The boomers and others at least made a stab at it 40 years ago.

The Boomers have had four Presidents. Gen X and Millenials have had zero.

Yet, the boomers comprised more than 30% of eligible voters for only 5 years, if I remember correctly. So if 70+ percent of voters are non-boomers, then other generations were those that decide the presidency. The boomers may have sucked, but other generations sucked more. The only logical conclusion, right?

Not at all. I'm in a situation where I'll take my RMD's (which exceed my needs) and pay the tax. When I made that statement, I was referring to myself.

Okay, I still disagree.

You should never punish saving, which is exactly what our entire tax system does.

Taxes should be collected on purchases, not income and savings.

I can see both sides of that coin. When I've traveled to a foreign country and see a double digit Value Added Tax on the receipt it's a real wake up call.

Our system needs fixing, no question. That said, I breathe a sigh of relief on April 16, knowing I don't have to confront the beast for another year.

The Boomers have had four Presidents. Gen X and Millenials have had zero.

And Gen X has had 3 SOTHs, though one was fairly short-lived (Kevin McCarthy). Aside from him and Mike Johnson, the most recent Gen X Speaker was Paul Ryan, from 2015 to 2019.

Boomers need to just admit to themselves that they've had a stranglehold on the country for too long. Even when they aren't directly in power, their size as a voting bloc is too big to ignore. They are the most privileged generation in terms of entitlements that the country has ever seen.

It is beyond time to pass the torch, and it is beyond time for this country to work for the younger generations.

This is emotional and simplistic. What boomers, specifically, need to pass the torch? I don't think they hold meetings or vote as a bloc. This is just lazy scapegoating.

I'm glad you asked. If I could wave a magic wand and make all the rules:

  • All boomers in Congress need to retire within 4 years for the House and 6 years for the Senate.
  • With uncommon exceptions, boomers in the private sector need to be strongarmed into scheduling final retirement no more than 4 years after they hit the retirement age. If they want to continue and are not among the receptions, they should start losing benefits they would have in retirement. The longer they hold out, the fewer benefits they will have.
  • Any and all legislation passed within the last decade that lopsidedly benefits boomers should be repealed or heavily reformed.
"But Waffledynamics, isn't this extreme and discriminatory?"

Yes, and here is why:

As of 2025, we are now raising Gen Beta. That means Boomers have been in policymaking dominance over people of six generations including their own once they became politically active enough to no longer be ignored at minimum and in direct positions of power at maximum.

The boomers, as a generation, have a lot of incredible people. They also have a lot of people hogging career opportunities and entitlement spending. It's time to wind that down.

As a tail end boomer, I really don't have much issue with your plan. We all have to share in some pain if we want to get back to where we want to be as a country. And at least it's a plan and not whinging about anyone that is older than them.

You're tilting at windmills. 85% of boomers are 65 and older. And retired. I'm one of the youngest at 61 and will retire within a year. 2/3 of Congress is GenX and Millenials. The remaining boomers are retiring or dying monthly.

This country is being run largely by GenX and some older Millenials. You got issues? Look to them. They're in charge much more than the remaining boomers.

Yeah, I dont either but dont F* with what folks earned. And stop lumping me and other older conservatives as a boomer "takers". This blanket 'brain off' hatred has got to stop.

Its so weird to see young conservatives hating on boomer conservatives. Hey it wasn't us that voted to expand gov, and rake up debt. Dont dare lump me in that crowd. I voted against that crap with a passion for decades. And now this group of people, that should know better, want to lump us all as bad evil boomers'. Screw that!! Its intellectually lazy and ignorant. Reserve your anger at libs and socialist regardless of generation. They are the ones that messed it up for us all.

I have no idea what harm you personally caused

I do know that every president over the past thirty years is a Boomer. So it's not much of a stretch to say, when speaking about those who are in a position to make or influence things that affect everyone's life, like the POTUS, that a Boomer was at the top of it all.

And, of course, there are the ones in Congress.

A, la Google:

Quote:

As of early 2025 (119th Congress), Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964) still form a significant bloc, with around 233 members across Congress, making them the largest single generational group, though their share is decreasing, especially in the House, while Gen X grows; Boomers hold a strong majority in the Senate (around 60) but less in the House (around 170 members)

So, not really much spin going on when it comes to pointing out who is, and has been, in positions that affect everyone's lives.

And many other things have come down in cost over time. TVs and other electronics, for example, are a fraction of what they cost decades ago. Long distance phone service is now essentially free and used to cost an arm-and-a-leg.

Also there are more tax-advantaged savings vehicles available today (Roth IRA and 401k, Backdoor Roth, Mega Roth, HSAs, etc.) that allow the younger generation to grow tax-free wealth faster than older generations.

These things are always changing as one generation rolls to the next due to changes in technology, society, and legislation. Some are helpful; others are hurtful. Don't act like your generation is the only one to deal with some pain.

The Boomer made a stab, but like what happened with so many of them and their children, they failed at that as well.

Now, seeing as how Boomers are still the majority of people, including the president, in political positions of power (Congress), maybe they'll finally make the hard decisions they should have made decades ago but were afraid of losing their cushy AF jobs by getting voted out for taking away things like SS.

Stop making excuses. The ball is in your court.

  • Senate: A solid majority of around 60 out of 99 senators are Boomers.

Seems like whatever is done in the House by the younger generations, the Boomers still hold the ball in the court in the Senate.

That's Okay. Thanks to time, they'll all be dead relatively soon, and there'll no longer be the "generational discriminations" between the current younger generations and the Boomers.

I'm very grateful. I'm also very critical of Boomers because so much harm was done either by them or on their watch.

I'm a Boomer so just what harm did I cause? Have you been paying attention to what's been going on now days on the X's and the Y's watch? Given your monicker you sure seem to spin .....alot.

Right now... TODAY... Congress is 2/3 GenX and Millenials. Why don't they band together to rectify this "generational discrimination" you keep referring to? They have the votes. Two thirds in Congress can override a presidential veto.

Stop making excuses. The ball is in your court.

  • Senate: A solid majority of around 60 out of 99 senators are Boomers.
  • House: Around 170 members, or 39%, are Boomers, no longer the largest group in the House.
Seems like whatever is done in the House by the younger generations, the Boomers still hold the ball in the court in the Senate.

That's Okay. Thanks to time, they'll all be dead relatively soon, and there'll no longer be the "generational discriminations" between the current younger generations and the Boomers.

Better start thinking now what your excuses will be when that happens ..........I foresee folks of your persuasion still milking the boomer bit long after that happens though.

Bend over and I'll show you what we get.

So, same as it ever was.

Yet again, thanks, Boomers.

Hmmm, I figured you were a retired boomer given you post alot during business hours. Maybe you should stop blaming others and get a good day job.

The beauty ot having a good day job is being able to make more money than I'll ever need, even after spending money like water, while being able to post on here whenever I want.

Without asking your specific age what generation were you born to?

Gen-X.

I take it you're a Boomer?

Also, I speak in generalities when I speak of any generation.

I can tell you, like most here, I actually want and try for what's best. It's those that don't that screw it up for everyone else.

... and that is a huge pile of crap.

I have no problem with SS. It's so ingrained in our society that it'll always be a political football, but it won't ever go away.

GenX/Millenials are the majority of Congress with a veto-proof 2/3 majority. They can force a vote on something if they want. It just happened in the House with a discharge petition over the objection of the Speaker.

Again, you don't have to wait on boomers for anything. Take charge with the majority you have.

That's hard work, and I think many simply find it easier to blame boomers. Whatever.

This schmuck picked up the tab from age 20 to age 62.......I still am at 76 but not near as much. I think that's a substantial amount of time and effort but now I'm old and its time for the current 20 to 62's to take over. Welcome to Schmuckdom.

Sounds like you're just into blaming everybody else older than you for the "state of the union" today. Pretty soon you'll be the prime target of the "it's somebody else's fault and not mine" folks of the generations after you. Enjoy the spotlight when it falls on you!
