To be fair we didn't get an origin in Homecoming or any other MCU film either, in Civil War we had a street level Spidey who'd already established enough of a reputation that Stark sought him out.

James Gunn tells us how SUPERMAN will begin:

"He is starting to become successful (at both jobs) in the big glitzy city so far away from home.

He's madly in love with a woman who isn't so sure about him.

And he's made a few superhuman friends who like him but think of him as naive.

All these new elements in his life have unbalanced him a bit and as he's tottering.

We're going to see where he lands in terms of his values and choices.
"

I think that's a great place to start off for a character that everybody in the world knows like the back of their hand. Almost like if the Tom Holland Spideys had started off at Spiderman: Far from Home. We don't need the story leading up to what Gunn described in his tweet.
Agreed. I doubt any need to see a retelling of Karl-El's escape from Krypton, much like we don't need to see how Peter Parker got his powers or how Bruce Wayne sees his parents murdered in an alley.

Speak for yourself. I want to see Karl-El's origin story. Wanna see how he gets out of that Krypton trailer.

All you need for a Superman origin.

Right, but Gunn's description sounds even further along in Supes' established character arc than Spidey was in Homecoming. That's just why it feels to me more like starting at the Far from Home stage.

Well that typo contributed to TA tonight.

I think I will leave it for posterity.

Gotcha, makes sense and I'm with you. In any case definitely the right approach, last thing we need is more versions of Bruce Wayne's parents getting murdered and the like.

(That said, for any comics readers the new Absolute Batman comic is some really great storytelling with an alternate origin that's really well done and a cool fresh take. Only six issues into the run so time to catch up.)

Here's a few minute preview. Feels very James Gunn and very comic-booky

How many people did Superman condemn to death by hovering in front of that building while the kaiju fire breathes him?

I'm in this film for GL, Hawkgirl, and Luthor.

I'm here for it.

Don't know if it's the score, art direction, or a combination of a lot of things, but this just FEELS more Superman than a lot of the other recent films.

Personally speaking, this will never quite be my chosen vibe/aesthetic.

But I see the vision now, especially in that Fortress of Solitude sequence (I love the 1930s feel of the robots/tech), and I'm absolutely here for it for it as well.

Super hopeful. Super kid-friendly.

It's a different kind of superhero movie vibe than we're used, that's for sure. Almost less modern comic book, even, and more old school Saturday morning cartoon brought to life, if that makes sense.

And I totally get how that's probably the best strategy in terms of maximizing box office/putting butts in seats. Seven-year-olds weren't lining up to see Man of Steel or Batman vs. Superman, but they'll definitely be seeing this.

And I can't wait either.

Also, just FYI, this is what premiered at CinemaCon yesterday, and will be in theaters with Minecraft starting today.

Then, I imagine, there will likely be a new, proper trailer either with Sinners the week of April 18th or with Thunderbolts* the week of May 2.

We shall see.

I may have posted this before, but what you're saying here reminds me very much of a "fan" short (I use fan in quotes because it was done by a professional animator who's fantastic) that was done several years ago.

It's a retro take on Superman that I feel like could be really cool in a live action cinematic version, what we look to be getting from Gunn isn't the true period piece that this is but definitely borrows from the aesthetic as you noted.

TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah, somewhat similar tone and similar old school robot vibes. That's pretty cool.

Oh and btw, if you listen VERY closely, you can hear Jor-El and Lara speaking in that clip - almost ethereally, from "speakers," as if previously recorded - as Kal-El is being brought inside the FoS. And yep, Jor-El is 100% who the leaks said he was.

Good Lord, these Snyder Bros - and there are thousands of them - are psychotic. They make pre-hating this movie their entire identities, and I cannot fathom anything more pathetic...

I love almost everything about that. Those three or four minutes appear to get the concept of Superman more than any live action piece of media since the original Christopher Reeve movie. It evokes the feeling I get reading All-Star Superman or Superman for All Seasons, two of the best Superman stories in any medium.

My only two quibbles (and these are completely surface level):
1. Pa Kent (or at least I assume it's meant to be Pa Kent) looked a little too slobbish.
2. I would've liked to see Luthor a little older.

I almost never go to the theater, but I'll be there for Superman.

And this is my vibe. I am not a fan of the dark brooding Batman or Superman or any of the others. I grew up with the light fun comics and the Superfriends.

I'll watch the others of course, but I prefer lighter.
TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?
For sure. I like lighter/more hopeful as well, but for a Superman movie, strictly when it comes to the cinematography/production design only (definitely not the script), I'd prefer something that looks like it was directed by, say, J.J. Abrams. Still bright/colorful/hopeful, but a little more contrast, a little more sun-drenched, lens flares, looks more like film as opposed to digital, etc. I guess just more classically cinematic. In fact, that first, Abrams-directed Star Trek movie from '09 would be my ideal comp, in terms of overall look/tone/vibe.

Yes yes yes yes! That took me back to 1978 when the original Superman movie came out, which remains the greatest Superman movie ever made.

I was initially aghast when I saw (a) the suit and logo and (b) Krypto. But I've warmed to all of that now. This was a similar reaction I had with Cavill and his suit, but this one is just so much brighter and more aligned to the Superman I knew as a kid. I'm pointing to the early 1970s when I got a cheap plastic cup with a Slurpee in it from 7-11 with Superman on it. And the Superfriends cartoon. And then came Richard Donner's fantastic movie. The sequels ranged from ok (Superman II, Superman Returns) to meh (Superman III) to hot garbage (Superman IV).

I believe I read that this movie is either an adaptation of, or heavily inspired by, All-Star Superman. I will be reading that soon.

I'm liking the cast, I'm liking the design, I'm liking the look, and I'm liking what they've given us of the score (at least assuming the music in that clip is from the score). The score had a bit of a John Williams sound to it without being a cheap rip-off.

Didn't realize this thread was here. I'm going to bring over my comment from the Movie Trailer thread.

Quote:

Love how colorful this is. Not just going with the old school lighter blue costume, but the entire trailer is gorgeous. The shot of him kneeled over the automaton is a beautiful shot.

I watched the sneak peak clip. It's very colorful, which i agree gives it a child-youthful feel, but I didn't see much in the way of content that was actually childish.

You can tell Gunn took a lot from Snyder in terms of the flight mechanics of Superman, which is a good thing because it gives a lot of weight to his movement that you don't seen with other superheroes.

Also, that Krypto is nails lmao.

Weird coincidence that the new Fantastic Four has that vibe too.
TCTTS

I'd say the slight distinction between the two is that The Fantastic Four is doing retro-futuristic '60s, while Superman seems to be doing retro-futuristic '30s. Each harkening back to when their respective comics first debuted.

I think all of this make him more relatable/human. It's one thing to just be impenetrable and immortal and nothing hurts you and fighting bad guys but if you're suffering fighting for justice, well then, that's what make you a hero.
