  • We should have had the flexibility last year and right now to improve the program if there's an opportunity to improve...except our AD gave a stop gap coach the contract of a 12 year veteran with solid skins on the wall. I don't fault Earley for asking for it and/or taking it, but Trev handing over that contract to Earley in that position was malpractice. It should be investigated for collusion or fraud it is so unexplainable.
  • It's now obvious that O'Connor WAS available and we didn't or couldn't get it done...again, Trev should be called to the carpet.
  • The only reason this season looked decent was because expectations were SO low after last season's absolute disaster. If you predicted this result 2 years ago with a Sorrell/Grahovac/Sdao/Moss led team, everyone would've told you they would be severely disappointed in that outcome. Yet here we are.
  • I'll disagree with most on this point though: I think a Nico, Kellner, Jorian, etc. led freshman group is a really good base from which to build a really good team over the next 2 seasons. But you gotta keep them, you have to improve them, and you absolutely MUST find a complimentary pitching staff.

I don't understand why Trev would get called to the carpet when O'Connor picked MSU. Have you seen State's facilities? Any facility on the ground beats one not yet built (we had nothing in 2025 and their stadium is twice the size of ours). They also fund baseball at a high rate. Their football program isn't good and it's easy to divert the funds to programs that can succeed.

I do agree that the freshman class of Nico, Kellner, and Jorian is a great foundation to build on. We are expecting more Nico type impact players in the class coming in July.

We made a run at O'Connor the year prior... as soon as Schloss drug up. The year before he landed at MSU last year. We went after him before settling on Earley.

I know - I'm just remarking about how some are upset that we don't have O'Connor here coaching when we were pursuing him. He picked MSU and their facilities (players facility and stadium remodel) played a big part in the decision. Brauny said we have rats, opossums, and bird nests in our outdoor areas. I guess they keep coming back. We lost Robbins to tu because of our facilities, and I'm sure he wasn't the only recruit.

I'm pretty sure he's talking about going after O'Connor when we hired Earley. State was not in the picture at that time.

I'm also talking about after the season in 2025 when Earley had to wait a week to learn his fate. I expect Alberts was putting feelers out seeing if anyone would bite. I believe it was only to top tier coaches because it would have been an upgrade.

I agree. It felt like he managed scared instead of managing to win. Too many times the obvious baseball play was there..,bunt, steal, hit-and-run, move a runner, and it just never happened. The small things win games, and it felt like Mike was too sped up to see the game clearly. More often than not, it seemed like he was two steps behind what the game was calling for instead of staying ahead of it.

The injury excuse is frustrating too. Injuries happen every year, which is why you build a roster with depth. You can't complain about injuries when you're not utilizing your entire roster.

Honestly, I think Penny wants the job. Sometimes it felt like he was the one calling the shots and acting as the head coach anyway because he believes he's next in line. Whether that's true or not, it often felt like the team was being managed not to lose instead of being coached to win.

Because Earley made the equivalent of the CFP with a number #12 seed in the tournament.

Do you fire a Year 2 coach at A&M for getting a #12 national rank? He coached to a 3rd place in SEC and hosted.

Some of you guys have ZERO perspective in A&M athletics. It is actually a bit laughable.

Most the whiners would hire and fire a coach every single year. Natty or Nothing. Fire the guy! Hear that Elko?

Sorry but he absolutely deserves to coach in Year 3 of his contract. After next season, you can tell me, told you so. But maybe I will, too.

Fyi, I personally do not like Earley's demeanor and sometimes overly emotional attitude. He shows immaturity at times but I understand he is a new coach and accept he is learning on the job across all fronts. It is what it is.

Year 3 is going to be a monumental challenge for Earley given the pitching problems and the loss of multiple hitting contributors. It may take a perfect hire at pitching coach and multiple successful transfers to get back to the tournament. Hoping (fingers crossed).

If year 3 looks more like year 1 though, it will be interesting to see what Trev does. Does he extend and make excuses for the failures or does he play out the contract (Trev's favorite strategy) meaning a lame duck season in year 4 which rarely works out well. Can't imagine Earley gets bought out.

We were picked damn near last in the SEC and finished 3rd, which is one of our higher finishes since joining the conference. We've only hosted 14 times in our history, and he achieved one of the 14. We were preseason 25 in D1Baseball and finished top 10 before postseason began. And with all the tu obsession on this board (unprovoked or otherwise), he swept those idiots. I hate the way the season ended but to pretend this season was a disaster is comical. We had a bunch of unfortunate things happen to our pitching staff that led to a tough year on the mound. Not Earley's fault that one transfer backed out, the Baylor fella getting hurt, Stewart getting hurt, Sdao not recovering how everyone thought, Sims getting hurt. Let's see how the offseason pans out, with portal additions and possible coaching carousel, before everyone flies off the handle. Jesus.

The only reason we were picked damn near last is because he **** the bed so badly the year before when we were preseason #1. Our roster was good enough this year to expect to host a regional. It's not like he overachieved.

Almost meeting expectations is more honest. If he won his region and competed in a super he might have met them. To exceed them he needs wins in Omaha.

Now if we could look through a lens with misty hope, then he did well compared to an abject failure last year after our school **** the bed in managing retaining an obviously flawed man.

I said this on another thread. He's not getting replaced this season so not wasting too much thought on that one.

It does crack me up though how fast so many have accepted lower expectations after just playing in the NC two years ago. If anything I would think we now know what can be accomplished at A&M if we have the right coach.

We just had a 3rd place finish in the SEC... We showed huge growth from 2025 to 2026 and we cut out the glaring problem of a poor pitching coach. As long as we make a great hire for our pitchers, I like this staff a lot.

However, we do really need to bring in a couple of studs in the portal. We're losing 3 first round picks and desperately need to add a dominant pitcher.

Dumb take. So you expect LSU to be picked damn near last next year just because they had a bad year? Keep moving the goalposts. He improved and put us in a much better position than just about anyone thought, sans our delusional fans who expect 55 wins a year and Omaha finals. No team in America has the consistency that some fans on this board think we should have. It's too damn competitive.

LSU had a massive amount of turnover on their roster compared to our 2025 situation. They did still completely **** the bed, but Johnson has actually won two natties there. He's earned the benefit of the doubt. Earley's claim to fame was taking a roster that was 2 runs away from a natty and turning them into a team that can't even make the tourney.

Absolutely ridiculous take that it's normal or acceptable to take basically the exact same roster that almost won a natty and miss the postseason with it. But our fans have never been known to actually hold coaches accountable to the level they should, so your response doesn't surprise me.

and another concern...

if you go back and look at the rosters of Childress' first 2 seasons...

in which he missed the postseason in 2006 and reached super-regional in 2007...

these were the top 5 players drafted:

2007 3rd round -- Brandon Hicks
2007 4th round -- David Newmann
2010 4th round -- Brodie Greene
2006 6th round -- Austin Creps
2007 7th round -- Kyle Nicholson

there were no other players taken in the first 10 rounds from Childress' first 2 rosters
------

if Gavin, Sorrell, and Hacopian go in the 1st round as expected...Earley will have had four 1st round picks on his first 2 rosters

Disregarded in what manner

Like they didn't know what the were talking about ??
So they made a big mistake at the top and completely whiffed on the bottom as well ??

Curious if that is your thought and thus we should take all polls preseason wise with a grain of salt ?

Having those guys on your roster is only worthwhile if they can play. Sorrell and Grahovac missed most of 2025. In a 2026 season when Earley had 3 first rounders play the bulk of the season, offense was not the problem.

It's a shame A&M has a guy that's learning on the job.

BUT, I don't think he should be fired. I don't think A&M can get a better coach right now. I used to think A&M could pull almost any coach without having to drop crazy amounts of money. I figured we were considered a destination school.
It seems like we were told no thanks by several coaches last year.

Sorrell played in 8 of our 10 SEC series

We had practically the same win % with and without him on the season as a whole, but with him we were playing SEC teams on the weekend, not Cal Poly and NM St. Our SEC win % was twice as high with him as it was without. With a healthy Grahovac or a healthy Sorrell last year, we probably would have been in a regional.

In any case, I use 2026 as a much more relevant piece of data than 2025, and Earley had a really good offense lined up in 2026.
