We were #1 preseason team and didn't make the tourney. We were hosting regional and couldn't make it to supers.
2 years in a row we haven't made a super regional and this was not supposed to be a rebuild after Schloss left. We did this to try and win quickly and we didn't.
Experiment failed why would we expect next year to be any different ? What did Earley do to prove he deserves to be a big time P4 coach at a school that was in CWS 2 yrs ago..
Admit it was a gamble to hire HC with no HC experience to keep the roster in order and not be decimated. Now we didn't produce in 2 yrs so let's get a real HC that has resume that deserves to be hired.

Because coaches that host a regional in year 2 don't get fired

That's the case at every school in the country, not just us

You need to relax a little. This isn't life and death.

I more or less agree with what you're saying. This team was picked to finish something like 13th in the SEC this year, but I take that more as a sign of a lack of respect from Earley's SEC peers than a weak roster. It absolutely wasn't a weak roster (at least not in terms of position players). And last year's pre-season #1 to not making regionals was the worst season in my time following the Aggies. Worse than even the 2000 season.

I feel like Earley has a lot of growing left to do before he'll be on par with the top coaches in our conference, and I don't want A&M to be the place where he does that growing. Our program should be able to hire a proven winner, given our resources. I also don't donate money to the Athletic Department or NIL, so no one cares what I think.

Top 3 of our order was amongst the best in the country and they are all going to get drafted. Can anyone really see us being better next year after a lackluster postseason this season?

Two of our last three baseball coaches had never been a head coach at any level in their life prior to being hired. The other had coached in multiple CWS. Look at the difference in results. Do we need to make things so complicated?

Yes, but you have to go get pitching

We won't have a Gavin or Sorrell. Superstars. but we can have a much more balanced roster

I guess you can't comment on the message boards unless you are paying the salaries. Got it.

We were picked damn near last in the SEC and finished 3rd, which is one of our higher finishes since joining the conference. We've only hosted 14 times in our history, and he achieved one of the 14. We were preseason 25 in D1Baseball and finished top 10 before postseason began. And with all the tu obsession on this board (unprovoked or otherwise), he swept those idiots. I hate the way the season ended but to pretend this season was a disaster is comical. We had a bunch of unfortunate things happen to our pitching staff that led to a tough year on the mound. Not Earley's fault that one transfer backed out, the Baylor fella getting hurt, Stewart getting hurt, Sdao not recovering how everyone thought, Sims getting hurt. Let's see how the offseason pans out, with portal additions and possible coaching carousel, before everyone flies off the handle. Jesus.

Hitting is easier to replace we need about 6 pitchers a catcher, 2b, 2 outfielders.
Most important a catcher and 4 pitchers.

You understand that we were picked to finish 13th in the conference this season by the "experts", and ended up tied for 2nd. It sucks we didn't make a Super, but we had a mess of injuries to our pitching staff and other positions that we could not overcome.

The experiment didn't fail. Some changes should be made, but the experiment didn't fail.

part of the issue is how the regional played out

Texas State did A&M a big favor by beating USC in the opener

it meant the Ags only had to beat USC once to eliminate them

whereas USC had to beat A&M twice

not a good look for the coach

I am just curious how many programs fire a coach after hosting a regional

7 teams who hosted didnt make it out..including #1 and 2

I was in the camp last year if we fire we fire but fully expected another year...I dont see the reason to fire this year

But next season will be interesting IMO a lot to replace but the roster both pitching and hitting has some parts that will be what can he do to fill much needed spots in a lineup

I have been surprised (but why should I have been, it's the Zoo after all) by the angst on this board fueled by unrealistic expectations. Hosting a regional is a good result for any team, and getting to a regional final is a better result. The season was not a failure. We should not fire the coaching staff. And a lot of you need to grow up and realize that real sports do not work the way it does in your head, where you just throw money at things and you inevitably rake in championship after championship.

Sports is a fickle business, and putting together a playoff run requires the stars to align in certain ways, and that's why sports is not about pundit's rankings, but about actually playing the games. We had a good result this year from a team that at the beginning of the season had obvious flaws, and we put together that good season largely through grit. I think we could have gotten to a Super and am glad we did not, but we didn't because we had a bad weekend, but that is just how baseball works.

tl,dr: Sports is not the internet.

Regional final at home with wins over Lamar and Texas State. Print the shirts!

I agree, with this regime. I'm not surprised at all.

I would prefer a regime where more is expected

Markets dictate contracts, including buyouts. If our AD didn't set us up to be able to buyout a completely unproven coach being handed a top 15 national job then he's a complete moron who should be fired with cause. I'm not even of the opinion Early HAS to be fired but literally the only advantage to hiring a new name should be the ability to financially pull the plug on them quickly.

My point (which you seem to be struggling with) is that actual results in sports is not determined by expectations. I say that as someone who participated in competitive athletics for most of my adult life; you don't win by expecting to, and losing does not necessarily mean that your standards are too low. The realities of baseball and the realities of a baseball "discussion" forum are not the same. I would encourage you and others to come back to reality, one where getting to a regional final is a good result for your season, even if a little short of where we wanted.

Earley is yet another in just a long line of coaches that everyone at A&M knows is eventually going to get fired, it's just a matter of when.

We'll do our typical song and dance of pretending he's a very good coach right up until the moment we don't. So predictable at A&M

One of the things that gets way overused on here. Is the whole I did sports.

One thing you seem to be struggling with. Making the regional final as I pointed is actually not a great accomplishment with the average teams we beat at home to get there. If we had actually beat USC once, you might have a point. But we didn't. The one team with a pulse whipped us twice.

My expectations are the team should have at least competed in one of those games. They did not. It's not just wins and losses. It's who and how.

  • We should have had the flexibility last year and right now to improve the program if there's an opportunity to improve...except our AD gave a stop gap coach the contract of a 12 year veteran with solid skins on the wall. I don't fault Earley for asking for it and/or taking it, but Trev handing over that contract to Earley in that position was malpractice. It should be investigated for collusion or fraud it is so unexplainable.
  • It's now obvious that O'Connor WAS available and we didn't or couldn't get it done...again, Trev should be called to the carpet.
  • The only reason this season looked decent was because expectations were SO low after last season's absolute disaster. If you predicted this result 2 years ago with a Sorrell/Grahovac/Sdao/Moss led team, everyone would've told you they would be severely disappointed in that outcome. Yet here we are.
  • I'll disagree with most on this point though: I think a Nico, Kellner, Jorian, etc. led freshman group is a really good base from which to build a really good team over the next 2 seasons. But you gotta keep them, you have to improve them, and you absolutely MUST find a complimentary pitching staff.
