I realized that it's an entire campus of people that applied to A&M but their letters began with "Unfortunately….."
I am close personal friends with a bunch of Aggies. Some of them are brilliant. Some of them aren't. Half of them started at Blinndergarten. For people that really want to go to a public school in Texas, there's a way to do it.
A&M is a great school. And I agree that Tech and A&M are much closer culturally than either school and UT. The funny thing is that the arrogance A&M hates about the "sips" is pretty closely related to the arrogance so many Ags exhibit towards Tech. It's not a good look. I chose to go to Tech because it had a degree plan that I wanted with a size and culture that I needed. 40 years into my career, it was a great choice.
I miss being in the same conference with A&M and having y'all on our schedule. I hope we never play UT again at anything.
And I don't ever want Tech in the SEC. Ever. But we don't have a natural rival in the Big 12 and that sucks.
Oh, and I miss the SWC. And I always will.
This is old rivalries content I can get behind!
I've never been a big fan of the academic snobbery that often pops up. I really wish we'd cut it out. I find it conceited to think loads of Tech grads really wanted to be Aggies or Longhorns. Some maybe... but I'm sure there are plenty of people who wanted to go to Tech but went elsewhere. They are all state schools meeting the same accrediting standards.
As a kid, I had zero concept of college football rivalries. I grew up in El Paso and watched the NFL but never CFB. Why would anyone want to watch UTEP football? When I moved to Austin as a teen, I didn't really pay any attention to the Longhorns either. When it came time to pick a college, I chose A&M because it was far enough from home but close enough to home at the same time. It was only during my time there that I became obsessed with my Ags. Amusingly, growing up in El Paso, whenever I heard Aggie jokes I thought they were referring to New Mexico State.
It's interesting to me that you'd like to play A&M again but not t.u. Seems like you'd want to shun us both. Maybe it's been so long since we played the nostalgia factor has kicked in.
When sip & soon announced their plan to bounce to the SEC, I felt like it was an opportunity for Tech to level-up. To me it looked like Tech and oSu had a chance to really grab the mantle. oSu decided to pee the bed then pout about it, so now it seems like y'all are going to have to take sole ownership of the Big12.
I don't really miss the SWC. I went to A&M in the late 80's early 90's and the conference was just crap. It seemed like mostly glorified high school teams. TCU was hot garbage. Rice was a joke. SMU was in NCAA Alcatraz. UofH and Baylor were good-ish until about 1991 then went straight into the shidder. Tech was perennially a 5-6 win team (but played like a 10-win team when they played us). Sip was in the doldrums even though they thought they were God's gift. We'd roll through conference play then meet a team from a real conference in a bowl game and get our deek knocked in the dirt. Getting out of the SWC was the second best (off-the-field) thing that A&M has done as an athletic department. Joining the SEC being the first.
