We have trip planned to Cancun over Thanksgiving Break…we actually get home on Thanksgiving because I must watch Ags BtHO tu.

I'm reading a lot about threats against Americans as a cartel response to Trump and the crackdowns on drug smugglers.

Anybody with any knowledge or thoughts?

Thanks

We live here and I personally probs wouldn't visit. Shootings and murders etc happen in the hotel zone now not just city of Cancun.

Heres a smattering of the recent killings and drama and drug arrests and weapons smuggling etc.

FWIW we were in Cabo last weekend and supposedly the cartels hung banners around town the week before stating that they were going to target Americans there as well (we did not get killed though).

After 20+ years of annual trips to Cancun/Playa del Carmen we have pretty much cut bait and found other places to go. That said, you are probably fine in the hotel zone, especially if you stay in a nice part (like the Kempenski, JW Marriott, Punta Nizuc, etc.), although the beaches get patrolled regularly there as well and it can be unnerving. As noted above I would hang around the resorts or just walk to one of the nicer restaurants next to them (I recommend Harry's across from the Kempenski)

There are also really nice resorts to the south but Playa del Carmen and Tulum have their own set of problems if that is your concern.

On the fence with this. Kids have been looking forward to college spring break in Cabo this spring. Friends and family still frequent Cabo (so does Looch!) but lots of nicer places to go.

There was another Jet Ski shooting on the Hotel Zone beach this last week.

The thought that the hotel zone is safe is misguided at best.

Oh yeah add in the new check points and it's a whole other american/canadian/european Shake down.

We Will be back in the states for most of the winter until things either cool off or we move back. We love it here but not with a 200% jump in homicides and a 1200% increase in firearm related arrests.

They just nabbed the #5 in the Sinaloa Cartel in between PDC and PM in September. The only reason someone of that level is in town is to oversee operations and specifically green lighting murders.

Since Trump closed the southern border, the govt and the cartels are juicing the locals and tourists. It's BAD.

We wake up everyday to reports of 2/3 dead bodies found along the highway or in the neighborhoods.

There were 3 dead bodies left scattered along Kulkulkan in Cancun earlier this month. 3 taxi drivers were arrestes for murder, etc.

If you want to go to a Mexico, pick Merida / Progresso / Holbox or El Cuyo.

Avoid Cancn, PDC, Tulum and right now especially Chetumal/Bacalar. They are in the Middle of a cartel gang war in southern Quintana Roo.

We can chat over the phone if you want to send me an email. I will be headed to Tulum myself in early Nov. I myself go to Mexico 4-5 times per year and have clients in the region almost each week of the year. Everyone's level of safety is different and I would not tell anyone to vacation where they do not feel safe. I would love the chat just on my personal experience in the region and area.

Do tell us where is a few hours away from Texas that can compete with Mexico?

When you have limited timeframe due to responsibilities at work and with family, Mexico is very easy.

So you've seen it. Tulum died. Talk about a rpido rise and a more rapid fall. There's no one in town and hasn't been for months. Most of the shops on beach road are boarded up. Sooo many established places have closed or barely afloat. Everyone but Americans are staying away from Tulum. Even the mexican Nationals.

Taxis have gotten so bad they're trying to charge locals $300 floor. Tourists $30-50 USD. Guacamole for $22 and a burger for $40. How about 4 tacos for $100. Tulum did it to themselves the sargassum just sped up the crash. Police check point hungry for bribesbecause there's no one in town and hasn't been all summer.

The economy has crashed here.

The feds doubling the entry fee to the ruins and $27 to enter the jaguar park and 1/2 the beaches wont and didn't help either.

From Texas go to the DR or CR.

Thanks Katy TX.

In Todays News in the great State of Quintana Roo and Cancun more specifically:

https://riviera-maya-news.com/three-charged-for-back-to-back-murders-in-cancun/2025.html

https://riviera-maya-news.com/nearly-two-dozen-women-rescued-from-cancun-sex-trafficking-operation/2025.html

And some from the previous week:

https://riviera-maya-news.com/cancun-taking-back-its-streets-thousands-of-drugs-weapons-and-vehicles-seized-in-three-months/2025.html

https://riviera-maya-news.com/cancun-police-capture-armed-jet-ski-dealer-who-fired-at-officers-during-failed-escape/2025.html

Are those sources reliable enough?

Almost forgot the abduction from the hotel zone - that one was a popular one here for a couple days.

https://riviera-maya-news.com/tourist-hospitalized-after-being-abducted-from-taxi-outside-cancun-hotel-zone-nightclub/2025.html

So yeah - human trafficing ring busted in Hotel Zone, Jet Ski drug dealer than shot at police on the hotel zone beach, multiple arrests for murder (Cancun is averaging almost a murder A DAY in 2025).

You can say I no nothing or just read the local News.

I think we probs know the climate here better than an real estate agent in Katy TX.

Heres a link to an International travelers experience w the Tulum checkpoints. They're THE WORST. Doesn't matter if you speak Spanish, married to a Mexican National, or are a local. With tourism down 50% Over the Last 6 months compared to the norm, even the police arent hiding the mordidas anymore. Hell, they now have their own Apple Pay terminal to charge you when the threaten jail and to tow your car. It isn't under the table cash anymore, it's a systemic and planned fraud/scam.

Our investment is doing just fine

Location location location

Closest vecino to the beach w private enterance and 24/7 security. We paid $275/m and the last lot in our Development sold for 500.

The overall RE Market is trash because of over Supply but that doesn't mean you can't hit a winner If You knew where to look and knew the Feds were going to restrict future Developments in the beach zone.

How did you not know that? You're the mr wonderful of Middle income Houston housing.

The crime in Mxico is why we didn't buy originally. We waited for priced to tank and then bought in the best area of town.

Since moving to out new place we Haven't had a dead body wrapped in a blanket laying in the Middle of the street Much less 3 and the murder of the head of police 50 meters down the road. But you're right there's crime everywhere. In Vail it was having your car broken into. In TOT, it's walking outside w your kids to find the foot of a dead body wrapped in Plastic laying next to the dumpster. Only to find out theyve found 4 others that morning scattered across centro and Tulum villas.

Houston is basicslly a third world country now so maybe you're just acclimated.

I have stayed in Akumal on HMB over a dozen times in the past 10+yrs but skipped this year. The sargassum is keeping me away moving forward (during summer) but didn't not know the crime had picked up so much.

The crash in Tulum is great timing with the airport being open for less than 2 yrs at this point.

We went to Cancun last year but are headed to Amelia Island tomorrow instead. Not the same but I'd rather deal with Floridaman instead of the cartels. At least here I can carry.

We had a great trip last week driving to and around Puerto Penasco. It's become a bit of an annual road trip for us and several other friend families and we haven't encountered anything that made us nervous to stop doing it. We get out and about a lot during the day, but make sure we are back by night.

If you are in a touristy area and aren't looking for trouble the odds are overwhelmingly positive that you will just be fine.
