Verde Garden closing, sounds like they are changing the concept. Owners of it own that whole development.

Superica had good food but the parking lot and valet situation was always rage inducing.

I get the sense Matty G's isn't going to last long. I know it's still early in their opening, but I've not seen much in terms of traffic since they opened. $20 burgers are a hard sell and that location is just odd. Can't believe that Studewood Cantina lasted as long as it did.

Cantina was run by the owner's of the building so it had a lot of runway.

It's a shame it couldn't make it as the food was good. Their service just struggled because it seemed like a bunch of kids that didn't really care.

They didn't know the menu and could barely manage the handhelds.

Unlike Alma and Goode Co who have excellent servers.

Will this be the nicest grocery store in the worst area in the nation? I wish it had been there when I lived in Oak Forest just for convenience sake, but should make for some good people watching. Turns into Wheatley right around there. Hide everything in your cars fosho.

Maybe they can hire the Bunker Hill HEB security guard who decks himself our like Mexican Special Forces to patrol the lot?

I guess this qualifies.

Trader Joe's opening a new location at the old Randall's site in Bellaire.

One recently opened about a mile from us in Cypress. I love that pace. 24 y/o me would have been super depressed if he knew how excited 44 yr old me would eventually be over this type of thing.

Not what I was trying to say...obviously there are worse areas in Houston alone. Is this the nicest store in proximity to a violent ghetto or can someone think of a better example?

There have been numerous cartel/gang related homicides within 3/4 mile from there in the last few years. And those are the apartment streets off of Shepherd (Oak Street etc). Then you have Acres Homes to the direct north. And independence heighte not far to the SE.

I just found it to be an interesting location. Great parking lot for strong arm robberies on unsuspecting yuppies. Tell your wives to keep heads on swivels.

The HEB on 288 at McGregor would like a word.

Oh damn...I assumed all of the hood HEB's were still "Pantry". Yeah, that one probably wins.

Raven Grill closed on Sunday. Didn't go as much after moving 10 years ago, but had to make one last stop.

The new Chilaquiles place on 11th (formerly Berryhill and 1891) is quite good. Big emphasis on authentic ingredients. I had the Chilaquiles Bandera which came with three different sauces and they were all tasty. Hopefully they can make it longer than 1891 did.

I need to try em soon. I recommend the chilaquiles at MexTaco House if you're in Cypress. Also hopefully Feges BBQ on Long Point brings back their brisket chilaquiles special again for Mother's Day.

edit: meant to thumbs up

I doubt they build anything soon, but it did have a leasing sign up at one point.

If they build an HEB there it has nothing to do with Highland Heights and everythingto do with Kroger inability to cater to GOOF.

They'd build a Joe V's if it did instead.

That would be awesome! Except for the traffic it will bring in.

They closed the Kroger at 20th and Yale???

That's a shame. It kept a portion of the population contained. Now they're gonna venture out to other places.

In other news, my wife and I hit up Texadelphia on Sunday evening.

There was one person when we got there at 5:45.

She left and we were the only ones there from 6:00 to 6:30. Didn't see any to go orders either.

Can't imagine that place lasting long. It's just a cursed location. Food was fine.

We did get to watch the final five minutes of the Duke/UConn game so that was exciting.

It def is a cursed spot. it doesn't help that the Texadelphia name has just about zero cache with anyone under the age of 35. People prob just assume its another Pappa Genos and not a full sports bar.

I've been there a few times. Love a Founder's Favorite occasionally, and my favorite cheesesteak spot is all the way out in Katy (Philly Flats). Glad Tex is back in town even if they probably don't stick around.

We hit it up every now and then, but like you said it's almost always empty when we go. Don't see them making it that long.

Yep. Much more likely to be another apartment tower.

I've lived in the Heights since 2019, and it seems the topic of apartments is always those two lots at 19th and Yale. Apartments on the north side of 19th and a parking garage on the south side.

or people getting the news about the Bellaire location confused.

They did tear down a Randall's and have announced a Trader Joe's

I just saw that Texadelphia for the first time a few weeks ago and had to do a double take. Thought to myself there's no way in hell that place makes it.

Burger Chan is supposedly taking their spot. I've heard good things about BC, but the neighborhood is already pretty saturated with burger places.

Burger Chan is really good, but agree with you on saturation.

They used to have one in Greenway Plaza that was great.

Wife and I went to Latuli last week in Hedwig village. I had no idea it was Bryan Caswell concept. We ordered a crab cake. I told wife it was the best crab cake I had since Reef closed.
Turns out it's the same.

Would recommend.

Might have a chance out there. Houston proper is probably 95+% gays, fruity transplants and third world migrants (I feel like that's being generous). Salt of the earth, down home places like Mama's Cafe and Texadelphia and Hickory Hollow just don't stand a chance anymore, not in gay/transplant/third world migrant Houston proper.
