Might have a chance out there. Houston proper is probably 95+% gays, fruity transplants and third world migrants (I feel like that's being generous). Salt of the earth, down home places like Mama's Cafe and Texadelphia and Hickory Hollow just don't stand a chance anymore, not in gay/transplant/third world migrant Houston proper.

Unhinged.

This is a real issue even in the suburbs. Strictly a demographic thing. The old hamburger/barbecue/chicken fried steak places just don't have enough potential customers.

Probably generational more than anything. People just don't grow up with that type of cooking at home/grandma's house like they used to. Touchstones like fried chicken for Sunday supper are unfortunately disappearing.

Sure ... Generational in that their generation grew up in another country and they don't eat beef.

I'll get back on topic with a recent dinner out ... Candente's on Richmond and Yoakum. I understand it's been around for awhile (and is owned by the Pit Room guy), but it was my first time here. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Had the brisket nachos.

The Bellaire location is a bit closer to me so I'll definitely give that one a try.

Has anyone tried Star Rover yet? The concept that replaced Superica on Shepherd.

Yeah I liked it a lot. Good vibes and good nachos. Salsa and queso, too. I didn't have a margarita but others in my group did and said they were good.

Need to try Candente's...have heard nothing but good things.

My bro and I parked in Highland Village area and biked to the Houston Open the other day. Stopped at a place called "Little Rey's" afterward and I was pretty impressed. We just got tacos and quesadilla (which is basically a melted cheese taco with lightly fried tortilla), so I can't vouch for the whole menu, but everything we got was great and the marg was very tasty and had me buzzin. Top notch salsa bar too. Next to some fancy lofts so tons of eye candy swarming, if you're into that sort of thing.

Great little quick lunch spot if ever in the area.

Disclaimer: We did have a few psilocybin capsules at the tourney, which makes everything more tasty for me, so maybe I need to retry it when I am not half a step into the spirit world. But pretty sure it's actually legit.

I've been wanting to try that place. Looks like a good place to take the kiddos.

Same owner as that group of Heights restaurants. He's got a decent little empire going in the Southern areas (mostly Atlanta).

Nice...is Superica closing? We liked it years ago when we tried it, but thought I heard rumblings somewhere.

Yes, Little Rey's would be an excellent spot to take kids. I don't recall there being a playground, but pretty spread out outdoor seating and it is next to a giant field and kids were running around all over the place.

Yep, pretty sure kids get free ice cream there. It's a solid atmosphere inside and out. Plenty of parking too as it sits adjacent to an office building with pretty big surface lot.

"quesadilla (which is basically a melted cheese taco with lightly fried tortilla),"

I'm just glad to have finally solved the great mystery of what a "quesadilla" is.

I've never seen one with just one tortilla…theirs looks just like a taco and should probably be called a taco.

It was a fair warning to anyone who might be caught off guard by the presentation. Or the portion size. Looks nothing like any quesadilla I have ever had. Whether el tiempo, taqueria Cancun, Los tios, Teotihuacan, or Taco Cabana. It's a phenomenal taco, but they call it a quesadilla, so heads up.

There used to be a great late night food truck on W. 19th that made them that way, then sliced into pieces.

Muy autentico.

No, Nice Ash is not doomed. Trust me. I know a guy.

5Tesseract might not be there much longer though. I'd seen something on FB about they got locked out for unpaid rent.

I like them either way but I've had the single loaded taco-shaped quesadilla at roadside stands in Mexico as that's how it comes at the taco counter inside the gas station at Durham & 16th (that's really good).

k

It's a regular quesadilla, just missing a common American step. Cut the "taco" in half and you have two quesadillas. A one tortilla quesadilla, then subsequently cut in half, is a quick and easy one skillet meal for a 3/4 year old.

It's mostly the portion size I was warning about. It's tiny for a "quesadilla". Go there and tell me if you've ever seen a "quesadilla" like it. Goodness DF is wrong with people like you? Like a nagging wife. Ok, you win. There, will that shut you up? Feel 'seen' now? Daily dose of attention?
