Reading a little on the Applebees discussion.

Made me think about my small hometown. There was a city ordinance that dancing was not allowed bc we were too far from a railroad.

My dad told me about bc he was on the city council and trying to setup a rodeo dance in the city limits.

Back when I was in school, our county was still a dry county.

Mojo Tortilla - You're not going to get a taco this good and fresh anywhere at 11pm on a Wednesday night.

This was my second time here and first time ordering a breakfast taco. The dirty south did not disappoint.

Wow thanks so much. We are excited. We feel this 24 hour thing will be a marathon and not a sprint. Not being close to northgate, we acknowledge the location is not a textbook 24 hour location. We will need interest from the hospital staffs, law enforcement, etc in addition to the wandering late night student clientele…..

Appreciate your business and comments!

We love Mojo Tortilla and have been multiple times.

The points add up quickly, but the last time that we were there, the cashier didn't ask if we wanted to use them. No big deal, more for next time.

Costa and Andreas, I do have a question about Burger Mojo. I sent in a response after our last order was not correct, three out of four burgers were incorrect on a pick-up order. Is that email not monitored? I have sent two different emails on the app with no response.

Firstly, apologies for the error. I would like to make that right for you asap. I can connect you with my mgmt to reconcile that.

As far as rhe email, I suspect this may be a handoff issue from the former manager to the new one. I have forwarded it to our team to drill down into asap.

my email is costa@eccellgroup.com. Feel free to reach out and we will make it right.

I dined in and was the only one there for the thirty minutes that I sat and relaxed after being on the road for a few hours. 11-11:30ish. Observed two cars come through the Mojo drive-thru while dining in and when I left, Burger King had four cars in their drive-thru. More informational than anything but it was odd to see them that busy that late.

Nice place. Coffee is decent. Food is lower tier fast food. Very chain feeling (as it is). Counter service was dreadfully slow, and the absence of music made the silence deafening.

All that said, I will try it again. I don't get too wound up these things unless they continue in perpetuity.

Similar experiences, though I've found the counter service pretty quick. I usually grab a cup heading to work and I don't think I've waited more than 5 minutes for my coffee.

Wish they had better breakfasty options, but it is what it is.

Mi Tierra continues to knock it out of the park for tacos. Grabbed a pollo con crema and a puerco con nopales for lunch yesterday. In and out fast, and their creamy habanero salsa is as good as it gets.

Agree. I also stop in on the way to the office. Counter service is quick and the coffee does not taste burnt. It's a win for me.

What, like kolaches?

They have biscuits and bagels you can get with eggs cheese, bacon, sausage. They also have some other savory breakfast options like omelette bites…. They have breakfast tacos, but I'm getting those elsewhere.

I had tacos from the Caldwell location a while back and they were great. I just hope they never get in a legal entanglement with the original Mi Tierra in San Antonio for the name. But I guess the same could be said for that Taquero Moocho using the Taquero Mucho name from Austin..,..

They've been open a few years now, I think they'll be fine. This isn't like when Buccee's pounced on Chick's almost immediately and forced a name change.

They didn't force a name change, it was the format they had an issue with (it was way more than the logo, anyone thinking otherwise is lying or misinformed). A better example would be how Logan's Steakhouse forced Logan's On Campus to become Logie's, or Mi Cocina becoming Polly's Cocina (though that was also a change of ownership as well, I think the Bryan one renamed to something else).

I don't think the location is the problem. Kettle used to be 24 hours for both locations until 2020, and for years Cattlemen's Inn Diner was open 24 hours, and that was a far worse location.

The real issue is how Walmart and H-E-B aren't open 24 hours anymore and with so many places that cut back hours, it's hard to get that momentum back up and going again.

Aside from stocking in the middle of the night, there is no way sales from 12am-6am made it worth being open.

I don't know how anything open 24 hours is sustainable, except the kinds of convenience stores you see in sketchy crime dramas and horror movies.

Another fantastic brunch at De Baca. Smoked salmon benedict (with bacon and spinach) and a sangria were only $27. My friends raved about their Juicy Lucy (prime rib with au ju and horseradish).

This. If the demand was there to make it worth their while, more places would be open 24 hrs.

We made it to De Baca for the first time Friday night. Very good experience overall.

Pros: Table ready when we arrived, service (Eric) was excellent, app and desert were fantastic (truffle fries and creme brulee).

Con: I wasn't super impressed with my 16oz ribeye for $68. It was a much thinner cut than I expected, didn't have much, if any, of a sear/crust on it, and was heavily seasoned. It wasn't bad, but it quite frankly reminded me of Saltgrass. Will likely try a NY Strip or buffalo cut next time.

Other observations I was neutral on but others may not be: Atmosphere was very dark and loud. Not quite 1860 level, but similar. Menus on iPads. I prefer a nice printed menu, but I understand they change theirs quite a bit. The pictures were helpful.

Let me also add that the way they bring the check is weird. It's presented on a fancy tray. The paper receipt is in a glass box rolled up in a gold ring. Unique for sure. It got a solid "huh, that's interesting" from me.

Ribeyes are my favorite steak, but I hate when they're cut too thin. I would much rather have a good strip at that point

Yep, it was probably 3/4". I think that's why it was lacking the sear, because it got to med rare too soon.

In fairness, the animals have gotten much larger in size over the years. So, for butchers and restaurants it's been an emerging challenge to achieve the same thickness on a steak at the same weight sold, due to expansion of the primal muscles.

In simple terms, generally a 14 oz strip or ribeye can be thinner/flatter these days than they were 20 years ago.

For a restaurant, this becomes a real pickle. The only choice is to make the steak bigger in weight and make it more costly to the customer, which the market may not bare.

I'm just glad I'm not in upscale anymore lol.

As for the sear, I won't speak to that as I don't their methodology. I'll only say that if the correct equipment is used correctly that shouldn't be an issue.

Really depends on the business. We pay rent for 24 hours, why shouldn't we want sales for 24 hours?

At the first Burger Mojo we couldn't make the high property basis pencil delta unless we went 24 hours with a drive thru. We later found out that we couldn't sell breakfast if we gave it away. So, now we are 10:30am-3:30am and it's just perfect.

Whataburger, Fuego do very well with 24. We are 24 at Mojo Tortilla because breakfast tacos lend themselves to that.

Obviously full service restaurants with alcohol are a whole different animal. The model is totally different and typically doesn't lend itself to 24. There are outliers of course but right now I'm just talking industry wide.

I want to say that this matter was handled very quickly and efficiently. I appreciate an owner that is willing and able to make things right.

We ordered from Burger Mojo Friday and had Mojo Tortilla after church yesterday.

Most of the 7-Eleven stores and Circle K stores are open late night. I would know.

Thank you kindly!

We are in a people business, particularly young people, and we will make mistakes. It's all about how we handle them.

I appreciate your continued business and patience.

We've got another concept in the queue that we are currently negotiating a lease on. It will specialize in chargrilled burgers. I hope to see you there! I'll announce when I can.
