In academics the H-1B program is very important to science, to employ non-citizens as post doctoral associates (research). Post docs are employed for two to three years anything more than three years is not acceptable. When I was a post doc I was informed that my project would end in two years, after that I was expected to move on to academic position or industry, it was best for the post doc. There should never be a forever post doc anywhere.

Post docs are more commonly hired as J-1 visa holders or on OPT from their F-1 student visa. At least these days. Then if they get hired as a scientist or Professor they apply for H-1B since they are no longer a student.

H-1 B by definition is for a "uniquely qualified" individual to fill a specific role and there is a statement somewhere that it is not meant for those seeking citizenship (ha). Then they always seem to extend the H-1B and then apply for green card.

Please tell us what immigration reform entails. And no, amnesty should never be an option.

I would caveat that any answer they provide needs to first consider whether there is an existing law that simply needs to be enforced.

Cause we actually have a lot of laws, many quite good & effective… when enforced. Temp visas, guest worker programs, etc etc.

The battle that needs fighting in Congress and in the judiciary is a complete slap down of sanctuary states, cities and related policies. Borders and immigration are clearly the purview of the federal gubmit.

That is step one before any discussion should be had on changing immigration laws.

F-1 is for students who are chasing a degree.
Foreign scientists are uniquely qualified to take specific roles in a research project and are candidates for H1Bs.
J-1 are much more general and not intended for STEM studies.

Show me in the constitution where it says all non-citizens have a right to be in the US? If you are a non-citizen here legally or illegally, at anytime we can tell you to get out because you don't have a right to be here.

And don't cry about breaking up families. There have been millions of US kids that have had to grow up or live outside of the US because their parents' jobs have taken them to live over seas. Sometime the whole family goes, sometimes just one parent goes and the other parent and kids stay in the US.

We all make decisions in our lives, and you have to live with those benefits and consequences that arise from those decisions. As a non-citizen in this country, you should never make decisions on thinking you are going to be here for the rest of your life. That is just asking to get burnt if you think you deserve to live the rest of your life here.

You sound like somebody that believes in squatters rights. Yeah it's legal but you know darn well what it's being used for.

Sure it's legal, but most likely a company is avoiding hiring Americans at a normal wage.

Most likely they get to have FHA loan on a house that an American can't get.

Because of their lower wages, it's highly possible that they get government benefits that they have never paid into.

They get to drive on paved roads and infrastructure that generations of Americans have paid for.

They get to send their kids to new safe schools in Prosper or Plano that taxpayers living there for decades have paid for and built.

Everything above is not entirely true for every single immigrant of course. Tons of great ones that are nothing but positive and there are tons of Americans that are a drain on the system.

I work in technology and they have mass layoffs all the time and replace them with Indians. I can assure you that they are not better than their American counterparts and customers absolutely hate that it becomes harder to understand and eventually it will get escalated to an English first language person. Most of them moved to Plano and have been there for 10 years or less.

So now a tech guy in DFW can't get the same job or afford a house in the town he grew up in and somebody that has been there 15 minutes can immediately get government benefits and put nothing down on a house and their children get show up in the newest coolest Prosper ISD HS and be top of class over a person who has lived and paid taxes for 40 years but can't afford to be there anymore.

When people talk about robbing our youth, these are those sort of things.

Well, it's a good way to get many of them not to come back. Those that want to come back can go through the hoops

Immigrants some legal, and most illegal have been abusing the system for years. This is just trying to even it out.

Now I have no problem with legal immigrants or even those that are over here on visa's but you still have to follow the rules.

I'd actually like to see us take back every permanent green card and have all of them go home and reapply. Show us you still bring something to this country.

We need a hard reset.
