That's it! I love those shorts, so well done and fun.

And to the Andromeda Evolution, it was a fun read for me up until the last half. Interesting, but just not my thing.

Book: The Persian (2025)
Author: David McCloskey

Summary (4*): The story of a Tehran-born, Swedish-raised Persian Jewish dentist, his recruitment to the Mossad, his Iran adventures, and his subsequent imprisonment. Pretty cool setup, although reading this while Iran and Israel are involved in a hot conflict changed how I interpreted it quite a bit. Really interesting up front, a bit slow in the middle, and a really interesting ending that I didn't see coming. Less a thriller than a character study of a guy that, from the outside, had a lot of thrilling events in his life.

Plot (3*): Kam, the main character, tells his story primarily through a crayon-written confession to an Iranian General after 3 years of torture and captivity, as a final act before, he presumes, he'll be killed. The story primarily centers on big events (a scientist's murder, a colonel's kidnapping and rendition to Israel) during Kam's time as a Mossad agent. Interesting subplot as well about the ongoing Iranian retaliation against the Israeli teams, and their families. Can drag a bit at times, but worth the perseverance.

Characters (4*): Kamran Esfahani, the dentist/spy, is really richly developed through his confession, and his conflicts and choices are a really good read. His Mossad handlers, co-spies, and the Iranian woman he falls in love with are all well done, but with less depth than the main character. Bonus for painting a picture of modern Iran and some Iranians with some nuance.

Re-readability (3*): Maybe. McCloskey's earlier novels are more re-readable to me (Damascus Station is awesome), but this is a little less action-y and more introspective…will probably revisit in a couple of years.

Who It's For: Someone who enjoys Le Carre's more psychological novels (maybe like The Constant Gardener), but applied to modern-day Iran.

Finished up The Shadow of the Gods by John Gwynne. This was my first novel of his and I really enjoyed it. Norse based fantasy that had constant action and some compelling characters. It really ramped up to an exciting conclusion, leading into book two which I will be starting next.

Last five books read so far this year (19 total), 2 in progress:

How was Executive Power? I haven't read any Jack Ryan books since the Bear and the Dragon.

It was good. Andrews and Wilson have taken over the series now and they are focusing more on Jack Ryan's other kids now, not just Jack Jr. The Last two have brought them in as major characters.

Nothing earth shattering but I have enjoyed most of the books in the series that have gone through 4 or 5 different authors.

Finally finished Blood Meridian, and that was a big bag of meh, IMO. Much of the prose is fantastic, and there are some incredible passages, but it just kinda drags on at times. Who knows, maybe one day I'll read it again and take a different perspective from it. I want to read his Border Trilogy next, but I need a break from his world after that. I might pick up a Paulo Coelho novel that is gathering dust on my nightstand.

I gave up on McCarthy after BM. I bounced off of The Road super hard. Thought it was super boring and was really confused as to the hype around. So tried BM and yeah, he is not for me. At all. Also struggled to finish it though it was easier than the Road tbh. So you are not alone.

I have the most annoying habit of reading the first book of pretty much every Gwynn series, really enjoying it, and then not moving on to the second. Hate myself. I even own I think all of them in physical copies.

Need yall to shame me into finishing at least one of his series now.

Yeah, The Road was also a bit of a chore. At least he gave us No Country for Old Men.

The Princess Bride by William Goldman. I think I actually liked the movie better because the comedic nature of the story plays out better on the screen than the page.

Better and quite different than the movie. Considerably so. The movie devolved the book and turned it into a silly, fun action movie which the book is not.

The book is somewhat of an ode to patriotism, nationalism, duty, honor, country, service. The movie was essentially mocking the book. Both are good in their own right and enjoyable, but yet quite different.

ETA: I should add the book is a favorite of mine that I read every few years. Two thumbs up.

It really is such a good book, and just like World War Z, completely different than the movies. Worth the read.

Pilgrims Progress - John Bunyan

Very on the nose by today's standards, but revolutionary at the same as a literary allegory.

Found encouragement from the swamp of despondency part.

Isaac's Storm - Erik Larson

Another good telling of travesty by Larson. This one is about the Great Hurricane that struck Galveston in 1900. First half of book is lead up and gives you some background, history, and politics on the US Weather Bureau.

Second half is hurricane eye witness accounts and aftermath.

Harrowing story that helped destroy Galveston's then trajectory as a major US city.

What YouBet said. I liked the movie and the book but not sure how they came up with the "feel" of the movie from the book. The differences aren't as significant as I Am Legend (book vs movie) but definitely different. If you have ever served in the military, especially the USMC, then you will definitely relate to the book. Definitely a good read/listen. If you listen to it, RC Bray is the narrator.

On that note, I'll put out my periodic recommendation to read the all time best book on armored humanity vs alien bugs.

I had that book recommended to me about twenty years ago by a coworker. I wasn't a huge sci-fi reader then and I had never heard of it, but I loved it.

Speaking of I am Legend, I just knocked that book out this past month. Talk about dramatically different from the movie, to the extent that I don't think you can really judge one against the other. They are two separate entities, much like the World War Z book and movie.

Yep. Both great books that had subpar movies steal their titles.

Travesty that WWZ hasn't been made an anthology on AppleTV or HBO.

I've never read that one, but if we are going on a human vs. aliens (alien giant dinosaurs) theme then Marko Kloos' Frontlines series is outstanding.

Oh wow. Had never heard of it but this sounds right up my alley. Been impressed with his other works I've tried to date so this is going on the list for sure. Thanks for bringing it up!

Pretty much the only book he ever wrote and it was incredible. I think he died not long after he wrote it but I might be misremembering that.

Will check out Frontline. Don't know that author.

Good series. He gets military culture pretty well. I think there are 8 books in the original Frontlines series, plus a couple novellas. I haven't read the follow-on Frontlines:Evolution books yet. His non-related Palladium Wars series is also really good.

Random question, but you guys suggest so many good books that I'm interested in, but can't keep track. How do you all do it? Is there an app you all use or just add to a spreadsheet?

Just finished Salem's lot, I'm in the process of reading through the Dark Tower series (finished the Wizard and the Glass) and I'm trying to catch up on the other books that I need to read before moving on to book 5 (wolves of the calla). I really enjoyed Salem's lot, it was definitely influenced by Bram Stokers Dracula (one of my favorite books), so I really enjoyed this take on the Vampires in a more modern time.
