Gene really pushed the band to keep the music simple

Because Gene is limited musically…He's more show than substance…

You don't have to be that great of a musician to play the bass. I think it is because Gene is more of a businessman than a musician. And what they lacked musically they compensated with showmanship. He even said that when he was replacing lead guitar players he bypassed a lot of really technically great players to hire guys who just knew when it was the right time to hit an A chord .

I am certainly no description of authority but Phil Lesh was a pretty accomplished musician, wasn't he? I saw him play ( You Tube) a long solo on his bass that I COULD NOT BELIEVE. Have never located it again, though I've tried (without really knowing what I was doing). Never heard anything remotely like it.

I think the comment you were responding to was saying you don't "need" to be a great musician to play bass (the same goes with any instrument. I think the point was that Gene can play bass fine, but isn't great at it like a littany of other musicians. If every bass player could play like Les Claypool, we'd be living in a different world.

A while back Dave Grohl was included on a list of "the best" guitar players and he responded that he wasn't even the best guitar play in the Foo Fighters, which is true.

Some musicians just do enough to get it done, some take it to another level.

June Lockhart lived life on the wild side. The actress best known for her roles as a mom in "Lassie" and "Lost in Space" and who died Thursday at age 100 had a surprising passion for rock and roll
"I have been a music fan forever," Lockhart told Fox News Digital in 2024. "The Beatles, Stones, Chicago, David Bowie, Huey Lewis and the News, Tina Turner."

"We threw a Halloween party at my home in the late '60s, and I hired a band called Hour Glass," she recalled. "They were fantastic. Truly talented guitars, keyboards and vocals . . . then they changed their name to The Alman Brothers Band!"

In 1994, Lockhart explained more about how she is nothing like her Hollywood persona.

"I can control my reputation, but not my image, because my image is how you see me," she shared in an interview, per CNN.

"I love rock 'n' roll and going to the concerts," the "Petticoat Junction" star continued. "I have driven Army tanks and flown in hot air balloons. And I go plane-gliding the ones with no motors. I do a lot of things that don't go with my image."

Lockhart was also a massive David Bowie fan and even said a few months before her death that her biggest regret was never meeting the British rockstar.
Billy Mumy, who played Lockhart's TV son in "Lost in Space," also weighed in on her rebellious side over the years.

"She loved rock 'n' roll," Mumy, 71, previously told Fox News Digital. "She brought The Allman Brothers to the studio when they were in a group called Hour Glass. She took me and Angela Cartwright to the Whiskey a Go Go. She got us tickets to see Simon & Garfunkel. June is truly a rock 'n' roll gal."
In 2013, Mumy told the Television Academy Foundation about Lockhart's fascination with Bowie, who died in 2016 at age 69.

"In the 80s, she carried a picture of one person in her wallet, and it was David Bowie," the actor revealed.

If you're picking a 99 or 100 yo person to die are you really a winner? Isn't that a little bit like bragging because you bet on A&M to beat Samford?

Sorry. That was a typo. Instead of "sip a martini" I accidentally typed "snort a rail", and instead of "David Bowie" I typed "Great White.". Damn autocorrect.

this sounds like the kind of story June Lockhart's plug would tell people so they wouldn't think she was snorting rails at Great White shows.

The thing about Lesh that initially got my attention was reading that he, prior to the Grateful Dead, had never played a bass guitar. Later I randomly saw, on You Tube, the passage to which I alluded. I believe I remember that he was classically trained.
