BUCKY BALL! Full court press, 3 point shooting, ball movement, a new era of Texas A&M Aggie Basketball is upon us. Buckle up! Over 7 months ago we were coach-less, we had 1 player on the roster, the portal was in motion, complete chaos. Then it was announced we hired away Bucky McMillan from Samford. A basketball savant from the South. An Alabama man with a style of play unique to the collegiate basketball world. Bucky Ball, score fast, trap on defense, get steals, and score fast again. An omen to 40 minutes of hell with a modern addition of making it rain from downtown.
Little by little our roster started to take its form. The Aggies were late to the game and had to rebuild a roster from scratch. Bucky in his first ever role as a power 4 head coach had to sell his style of play, had to sell Texas A&M, had to sell his vision for this program. He was able to add talent, he added 6'9 Mackenzie Mgbako, a former 5 star from Indiana. He added size in 6'11 center Federiko Federiko from Texas Tech, 6'11 forward Zach Clemence from Kansas, 6'8 physical rebounder Rashaun Agee from USC, and 6'11 forward Jamie Vinson from tu. He also went after a plethora of guards with plenty of experience. He landed Pop Isaacs from Creighton, Marcus Hill from NC State, Rylan Griffen from Bama/Kansas, Jacari Lane from North Alabama, Ali Dibba from Southern Illinois, Noah Shelby from Kansas, and he brought Josh Holloway with him from Samford. He also added 6'6 sharpshooter Ruben Dominguez from Spain. Chris McDermott is the only one who stayed from last season and freshmen Jeremiah Green stayed committed.
Bucky did an amazing job filling out this roster, 12 of the 15 are upperclassmen. For the limited time he had for the portal, Bucky filled out a veteran, well rounded roster. He added some size, and he added a lot of guard depth which is a must for Bucky's system. When fully healthy I really like this lineup. Having Isaacs, Griffen, Hill, Lane, and Hollaway gives us a solid and experienced back court and depth to handle a up tempo offense and full court defense. We'll also have size with Federiko when could protect the paint, as well as Agee who is a big enforcer in the paint. Clemence and Vinson are both 6'11 but they can stretch the floor with shooting ability and will help create driving lanes. Mgbako has an excellent shot, but is very effective in the paint. We'll have plenty of guys who can take over a game and with our offense we'll lean on whoever's hot that night.
Game 1 should be exciting, fun, and I hope the energy in Reed is "palpable" lol. Northwestern State returns 6 people from last year's squad that went 16-16 and 12-8 in conference play for 4th place in the Southland. Nowadays 6 returners may seem like a lot. They return their 2nd leading scorer in guard Micah Thomas and their top rebounder in Willie Williams.
Their head coach told the media he had no idea how to scout for us. We'll rely on our talent and fast pace to hopefully blow out inferior teams. It'll be interesting to see how fast we play and how our defense looks out of the gate. I expect hiccups but it'll still be entertaining basketball and we'll see a bunch of guys bought into this system and playing hard for this school, this staff, and one another. Hopefully we can get a nice crowd, let's get behind Bucky Ball and ride this rollercoaster together! We are so back!!!
