I'm new to the whiskey scene but what would be the best whiskey for making cocktails? I'm thinking about Woodford Reserve probably but also very interested in Buffalo Trace and Angel's Envy. Any thoughts on which I should get?

Solid choices for just getting into it and not getting too expensive. I usually use Wild Turkey 101 or Bulleit Rye for my basic Old Fashioneds.

Angel's Envy Rye makes excellent cocktails albeit a bit more expensive.

The new 100 and 125 proof Sazeracs really bump up the classics Sazerac cocktail.

This is good advice. I prefer Rye in cocktails. Sazerac or Bulleit for lower cost off the shelf.

Since you are new to it and looking to mix, stay cheap and get good at making the cocktail.
Then decide between bourbon or rye. Then start to try a couple of different bottles to test. You will eventually start to taste what you prefer.

I'd avoid mixing anything expensive though.

Welcome to a new world.

When making cocktails you don't need anything too fancy for a wow cocktail, it's usually the proportions and balance that make all the difference (I'm not an official mixologist but I'm very close). Main question is when to use Rye vs Bourbon or both.

Here is my famous old fashioned recipe, served to literally hundreds. I highly recommend getting a large mixing bowl for batch ma king, it will save countless time. I make my old fashioned batches in a 4 cup Pyrex glass cup, and use a 4 oz Pyrex measuring cup for ingredient measurement.

Recipe scaled to what I call '1' old fashioned
2 oz Buffalo Trace Bourbon
2 oz Bulleitt Rye Whiskey
6 dashes angostura bitters
1/2 oz liber and co gum syrup

Stir all ingredients, add ice, stir again, strain over new ice in the cup or pour over ice ball.

Garnish - I use 1 strip of Collins Candied Orange Peel and 2 Amarena cherries, all skewered on 1 toothpick. I pour the cocktail over the garnish vs add the garnish after pouring.

This recipe will yield a velvety, spiced, yet smooth cocktail that is very very drinkable.

When I host parties I quadruple the above recipe, then pour the mix into big yeti style holders (like the 25 oz corkcicle bottle). I own 3 and before parties I make 2-3 different cocktails and fill the bottles and I can have fun during the party instead of cocktail the whole time for people.

Besides whiskey I recommend you have 1-2 panty dropper cocktail for ladies, as many don't like whiskey cocktails.

My French 76 - I never make it smaller than this batch size, but you can scale it down if you don't own a large shaker. I highly recommend you buy a 25oz+ shaker. Doesn't even have to be a metal one, it can be a protein style shaker as well - just make sure you can strain from it.

French 76 - comes out a beautiful pink color and tastes like summertime. Does not taste like nasty gin I promise!
4 oz Aviation Gin
4 oz Empress Gin (the purple one)
3 oz lemon juice
3 oz simple syrup

Shake vigorously for 15 seconds with ice. Strain into Coupe Glass or Champagne flute, 2/3 of the way - no ice - this is martini style. Fill remaining space in glass with a low cost champagne or prosecco. Add a lemon peel twist for decoration.
My wife's friends ask to come over for happy hour just for this cocktail they love it so much, and they aren't gin drinkers at all.

I regularly am told my Old Fashioned's are the best people have had - they truly are cocktail bar, high end worthy.

Truth be told, I got the recipe after sitting at a bar at a nice establishment in New Orleans a few years back. I like to think I know what a damn good old fashioned should taste like and this one was #1 for me. The bartender was very kind to show me exactly what was in it.

Fortunately, the ingredients can be had quite easily.

2oz rye or bourbon (to your liking, I prefer Rye in my Old Fashioneds)
1 oz Cocktail & Sons Spiced Demerara Syrup (this is 100% the key ingredient) - it has baking spices, coriander, and the sweet caramel demerara sugar in the syrup. Magnificent.
4 dashes of Orange bitters
3 dashes of Rhubarb bitters

All in a shaker with ice. Shake.

Pour into cocktail glass with single large ice cube already in the glass.
Fresh orange peel for garnish. Make sure to twist the peel for the oil, rub around the brim of the glass.
1 luxardo maraschino cherry.

I also pour a little dabble of the luxardo juice in there.

Stir. Serve. Enjoy

Now to answer your question OP - what spirit to use? For Rye, I think you can easily go with the basics, my go-tos are usually...

- Bulleit Rye
- Sazerac Rye
- High West Double Rye (my favorite, currently, for the old fashioned, at a reasonable price)
- Kick it up a notch? Jefferson's Ocean Aged at Sea - these are absolutely delightful with the recipe above. I, unfortunately, find myself able to drink 3-4 of these because they go down too well. Not a rye but don't matter.

Michter's and whistlepig are also great at the higher price point. I've never been a huge fan of Angel's Envy.

my wife's cocktail of choice is a french 75.

I'm trying to see the difference here... the empress gin? or the syrup? I don't believe the 75 has syrup in it.

We're throwing a party tomorrow and I may need to go make some of these.

Also, when you say purple, do you mean indigo?

Well if we are just doing cocktail recipes now... Paper plane is easy and a crowd pleaser. Plus not that common so people will like something new.

Equal parts:
Bourbon or Rye (as stated above, I prefer Sazerac Rye).
Amaro (available any any liquor store)
Aperol
Lemon Juice (fresh squeezed is best).
Shake with ice, served up.

I too will make in a 4 cup pyrex (2 cups is plenty for 4 people), mix, then pour to be shaken.

There have been some awesome recipes shared here already but I think the number one takeaway is that the syrup and other ingredients in the cocktail are crucial. Buy nice syrup for an old fashioned and it makes a huge difference. Use fresh lemon juice in a paper plane and it makes a huge difference. They'll cost a bit more but they really elevate the quality of the cocktail

Had zero idea there was such a thing as Rhubarb bitters. Grabbed some on my way home, now on the hunt for the syrup you recommended. That recipe looks awesome.

Houston peeps check your Specs. Downtown had cases of Eagle Rare 10, Blantons, and Old Fitz 7.

I know many on here have plenty but I keep a few extra on hand for gifts and whatnot.

Thank you sir. No more blantons but did grab a bottle of Old Fitz 7 which is what I really wanted.

Good to see more inventory flood the market and every store literally has cases of EHT small batch lying around.

If anyone is in the Denver area, Applejack off of I-70 had easily 100+ bottles of Blantons (regular, gold, and the 375 ml) in a very nice BT display. I should have grabbed a picture. I don't need any more Blantons at the moment, but know people had been looking for it. Prices were about what I have seen in the area over the last few months. 99 for the regular, 160 for the gold, I think.

After ChoppinDs put me onto the Rhubarb bitters, I asked Chat to build me the "perfect double Old Fashioned to put in my 20oz Yeti" with the other ingredients I had at my disposal.

I specifically asked it to use the 120.75 proof Still Austin Rye TexAgs pick.
This thing is a knockout.

In mixing glass:
1 1/2 sugar cubes
3 dashes Orange bitters
3 dashes Rhubarb bitters
1/4 oz water
Tiny pinch of salt
1/4 barspoon Luxardo syrup

Muddle to a rich syrup

Then:
4 oz. Rye (I used 5)
Ice
Stir 40 seconds
Strain over large cube in Yeti
Express orange peel
Drop peel in
Rest one Luxardo cherry on the cube

Will be enjoying this by the pool the rest of the summer.

Cheers everyone, hope you are having a great weekend!

Wait until that Demerara syrup comes in. You won't ever want another old fashioned that isn't it.
