Good tweet about the history of Bourbon, Kentucky distilling, Jimmy Russell and the decline in Bourbon sales.

Poor financial decisions were made. Have no clue what this is but had to have it.

I'll be pouring myself a thimble full each pour. It's probably terrible, but I couldn't pass it up for some stupid reason. Especially being Barrel I just was way too curious.

Looks like the W107 finally made it down to Corpus. Liquidtown had it in a bundle with a 4r SBBP pick for $169. For one of those bundles where you have to buy a certain bottle to get what you actually want, it is probably the best i have seen. also had ER for $45 which while not as good as it used to be is certainly more sensible than what people were trying to get for it.

Fatty's has a few Castle & Key Cask Strength Wheated in the front shelf right when you walk in. I'd never had any of their stuff but heard good things.

Glad I picked it up (along with an EH Taylor Single Barrel). I really dig it. It's in the ballpark of an Antique 107

I would have bought it too. Barrell makes good stuff and it's always fun to try a hazmat. I only have one hazmat.

If you make it up to Flagstaff, I found an Old Forester single barrel pick (Flagstaff bourbon club) at Mountain Spirits. It's hot but a fantastic pour.

Castle and Key is my current favorite wheated . The Cask strength is even better - enjoy!

I was at a tiny independent store in Hurst, TX Friday night. There was not a ton of "rare" stuff in there, but for about 1.5 hours the owner had a cabinet of opened bottles that 6 of us - including the owner - sampled. Probably 8 bottles we tried including an 18 year old rum that might make me a convert.

2 out of 4 or 5 Starlight varieties he had open
Green River Wheated
An independent bottle from a guy who buys orphan barrels and bottles them(he was in the store with us)
Smoke Wagon 10 yr Rye barrel pick - outstanding and went home with me
Sazerac 125 proof rye - really good
Pinhook 10 yr barrel pick - also went home with me
Ron Izalco 18 yr cask strength rum - enough to make me a rum guy

The owner had water for us to drink between samples and then went next door and bought snacks for us as well.

The guy uses loyalty points to put you in tiers to be able to purchase rare/allocations at very close to MSRP. One of the guys sampling needed some points to buy a bottle of Thomas Handy Rye. Since I don't live there, I gifted him my points. After purchasing he opened it and let us all try it - outstanding. Then, I used his tier status to buy a Penelope Valencia - we opened it and everyone tried it as well.

If anyone is in the area go see William at Tri-City-Liquor on Pipeline Rd in Hurst - its in the same building with a Shell station.

This was the kind of store experience I have been hoping for for a long time. There was even another customer who brought in an 18 yr old bottle of Cognac for the owner to try since he knew he liked it.
William is the best! He used to be at Mirage in Colleyville and got a chance to own his own shop. Haven't been back to Mirage much since -the new guys aren't the same.

I found an Old Forester Presidents Choice today, but they wanted $500 for it. Somewhat tempting, but I couldn't do it.

Secondary is less, unless it's an early batch, but that wouldn't have been distributed in TX.

Did a blind tonight with Sazerac Full Proof (125 proof) vs. Thomas Handy 2023 (124.9 proof).

Surprisingly 3 out of 5 preferred the Sazerac. Unfortunately I wasn't one of the 5. Apparently my tastes run toward the more expensive as my wallet can attest.

As an incentive of

$40 a bottle vs

$$$ (?)

maybe your palate will adjust over time.

I, for one, think the Sazerac Full Proof (125) is the easily best of that line. Plus, that matches my bank account with much less pain.
