You're going to eventually have to learn how to hit that 6-iron so why wait? I can understand his philosophy if your goal is to shoot a certain score but if you're just wanting to improve and reach your maximum ability, then you need to learn how to hit every club in your bag. So, take the club that leaves me an easy wedge into the green from 100 yards, and hit to safety. Pin hunting at my skill level would be foolish and only leave me more frustrated with the results.
