Up 5-1 when Horton leaves the game.....down 9-7 in the 8th.
This bullpen.
It's on ESPN tomorrow night for those who enjoy watching train wrecks.

He just hasn't been able to adjust to the book on him and keep from chasing.

Although PCA is still barreling up at an above-average clip in the second half of the season and has an identical average exit velocity, he's hitting the ball hard (i.e. more than 95 MPH) at a lower rate. And with a worse launch angle, he's barreling up less often.
Throw in a home run/fly ball ratio that was unsustainably high in the first half (and one that has probably been unfairly low in the second half) and, well, there you have it.
But do you wanna see something in the plate discipline stats that's almost unbelievable? It certainly took me by surprise.
Compared to the first half of the season, second-half PCA is actually swinging at WAY fewer pitches out of the zone (that's good!) and slightly more pitches in the zone. That's a pretty incredible set of facts for a guy who feels like he's totally lost at the plate. But that's not all.
PCA's out-of-zone contact is down (good thing to reduce weak contact) and his in-zone contact is up (good thing to increase hard contact). He's also dealing with fewer first-pitch strikes, and his whiff rate is down a bit.
Despite all that, his strikeout rate is actually up. Which … seems wrong, but is true. But, yeah. A look under the hood shows that, except not elevating quite as often or hitting it quite as hard, PCA actually looks to be okay. By which I mean he is controlling the things within his control.
