This is so bad, we have our AG supporting a degenerate gambler who no one except tech wants playing. This sport is doomed if this is what we can expect if you want rules.

put aside the absurdity of this order. the facts are there is a lawful order out there. the AG could not sit idly by if the Big 12 (including UH who I guarantee won't vote to do this) act against Tech for following that order.

that said, my WAG is this is all bluster and no one is going to actually punish tech or do any real boycott as long as this order is out there.

Tech can still dismiss Soresby without violating the court order.

Soresby would still have his NCAA eligibility.

Interesting, this makes sense. Thanks for this.

Makes you wonder though if the AG would be doing this if a smaller university like UH were doing something like this. Would the AG do this for any public university in TX? Or is it just doing it out of a favor for some folks at TT?

Does A&M or Texas have any history of using the AG to support them in this manor? I don't recall the AG protecting us when we got in trouble in the Jackie Sherrill era.

the campbell factor is extremely likely why this "warning letter" went out.

I hope Tech never gets the opportunity to field their gambler. However, it's big bag of $#!t that ESPN and others are advertising gambling during the games. We also have The University of Arizona's football stadium being officially named Casino Del Sol Stadium.

Hey let's promote addictive products to college-aged kids and then act outraged when student athletes gamble.

You wanna blame alcohol ads for drunk driving arrests too?

drunk driver does not compromise the structural integrity of the automotive industry.

The DPS does not sell naming rights to highways to Budweiser.

Athletes have access to non-public information (injuries, team morale, game plans). So participation in gambling is dangerous to the market. Druck driving ads?

Nice attempt at an analogy but it failed.

U of H is larger than Tech, has similar academics, and is located in a larger more influential metro area.

This is purely because of Campbell's donor influence on Paxton.

I remember when Gov Annie had to send threats when Baylor was going to be left out of the Big 12.

In Texas, politics has always been involved in sports at all levels. It's no different than any other state.

As an oilfield trash kid, I hope all rich oilmen gig the hell out of Sankey and Finebaum!

Wonder what the other B12 AD's who aren't from the Texas schools think of Paxton's threat?
I bet (pun intended) they are perfectly willing to call his bluff and sanction Tech.
And at the same time file lawsuits against Tech and Paxton citing illegal usage of an ineligible player and sue Cody Campbell for bribery of the Attorney General to do his bidding.
After all..Paxton is really going to die on a hill of protecting an illegal gambling player during an election year?
Really?
He thinks none of the other Texas schools (especially those in the B12) aren't gonna be pissed about show of blatant disregard for their football programs?
Much less show any regard for protecting the sport from players who can now easily throw games or shave points to maximize their betting winnings?
Paxton is basically endorsing gambling by players on their own teams. And some will even bet against their own teams.

If fans REALLY.......... REALLY want the game back with rules, then dont show, the only way that these people listen is when there money is on the chopping block.

I think Ken Paxton made a foolish decision to send a warning letter to the Big 12 schools and support a degenerate gambler that no one except Texas Tech wants playing while running in a close Senate race against James Talarcio.

FWIW Houston is the first Big 12 opponent that Tech is scheduled to play this season. Considering that Fertita is their Cody Campbell, and the Fertita business empire owns roughly 60 casinos, it puts them in a unique position to both not be scared by Campbell or Tech's threats, but also have their hands deep in the gambling industry. I don't know if Tilman has weighed in on this situation, but he could make things really interesting. If Houston officially opposes Sorsby's eligibility and Tech and/or the AG wants to threaten UH and Fertita takes issue with that it gets really interesting. Conversely, if UH and Fertita officially oppose playing against Sorsby does Tech really want to try them? Who blinks first?

I am a Tech grad and I am of the opinion that Tech should at the very least bench Sorsby for the whole season. That said, I agree with this. I am no fan of Paxton, nor of the injunction ruling, but his office is doing its job here.

The AG's only actual duty is to defend Tech in a lawsuit or otherwise represent Texas Tech in litigation.

Sending a letter with scary terms and threats to entities that were not parties to a lawsuit (and about legal issues that were not brought up in the lawsuit or the order, by the way) is above and beyond the AG's duty.

This feels like virtue signaling - teams that don't have Tech scheduled nor any particular reason to do so are really throwing down the gauntlet

While true, don't direct your derision at the teams doing the virtue signaling. They are doing what's within their control. Direct it at teams that DO have tech on their schedule if they do not take action
Exactly. Setting a precedence that needs to be set for future situations.

Not if he gets hurt.

You missed what I was referring altogether. Texas Tech can go 12-0 with another quarterback their schedule is so bad, that's not what I was talking about. If he plays, the playoff committee can put Tech very low in the playoff format making them go on the road in the first round they could easily do that but I doubt it's ever gonna come to that.

Heck, They could put Texas Tech in the playoff bracket at the bottom and justify it even if he doesn't play because their schedule is hot garbage.

Paxton is a pretty simple guy to understand. Election campaigns require a lot of money. Cody Campbell has a lot of money. Connect the dots.

Bring on the hatred. It will pack stadiums.

Ironic really.

Sorsby absolutely has to be banned…

was thinking the same. Tech would have to spend hundreds of millions to gain this kind of attention.

The only way to really hurt them is for teams that play at Lubbock this year to forfeit and now show up. Of course that will cost those teams money, but it will talk Tech way more as they lose out on ticket revenue, all of the merch and food they sell at the stadium, and start hearing it from the local businesses losing out on thousands and thousands of dollars in hotel rooms, restaurants, bars, etc.

It is EXTREME apples to oranges because college volleyball draws next to nothing compared to football, but it's only been 2 years since a bunch of Mountain West teams forfeited to San Jose State when they had a dude pretending to be a woman in their lineup. Wyoming, Utah State, Nevada, and Southern Utah all forfeited regular-season matches, and Boise State potentially cost itself a NCAA bid by forfeiting the MWC tournament semifinal to SFSU.

big 12 sues in federal court in Dallas.

now paxton has to get involved. as said above, the letter was not required, but now this is the state being sued.

His letter also created a second cause of action asking the court to declare that Paxton is violating the big 12's first amendment rights

i thinkg (but not positive) this was assigned to Brantley Starr, nephew of Ken Starr.
