As @RossDellenger reported, Texas A&M is extending head coach Mike Elko.

Per sources, the extension will be for an additional six years with an average salary of $11.5 million per year.

You've seen next years schedule right? If he makes the playoffs next year then he's worth it. If we fall back to 8-4 this is just the same old song.

It is absolutely the right move. Just because we were burned in the past doesn't mean we should worry about it or let that fear dictate the future, that is a loser mentality. We want to be a top program, we think we have a top 5 coach, pay him accordingly then lets move on from the rumors and focus on business ahead!!!!!

As much as I hate the sips there was a point whete they changed coaches like we change underwear until they landed on Mack and rode that to a natty.


There is a time to be frugal, in this market with the jobs out there, now is definitely not that time!!!!!

I certainly may be wrong, but Elko does not strike me as the type to chase money and allow that to negatively affect how he goes about his business as coach. He seems extremely motivated to get it done because he is a competitor and wants to win.

As others have pointed out, this removes doubt not only for the current players on the team, but for all the high profile recruits we're after.

We won't be able to buy out a coach for 40+MM and hire another at that level. It will not happen.

Any and every time there is any amount of success, we go effing wild right away. It is the same thing every time

Unless you're one of the people giving the money, you have zero idea what "we" will be able to do. It's not my money either, but the donors don't seem scared to light their money on fire regardless of the situation.

A&M doesn't really have a choice here. Too many big time programs looking for coaches. We have a coach that has shown a lot of promise and currently executing the best season in decades.

To let that slip out of your hands, and have to plunge into this years coaching nightmare is a far worse scenario.

Doesn't matter to me if we go 8-4 next year if we win a natty this year.

There's a lot of rumors about Kiffin potentially leaving Ole Miss for Florida before the playoffs even start. I don't think Elko would do something like that to us, but every week he didn't sign an extension and other top targets did make me wonder.

If the doners are opening their wallets, and they are cool with it, then right on.

There is a lot to be optimistic about here.

I have no problem at all with the extended years or additional salary - EXCEPT, how much is guaranteed? We better not be 100% guaranteeing a contract again. No matter what.

Tell me you just started watching A&M football without telling me you just started watching A&M football.

If Elko wins a national championship, build him a statue give him 200 million, make him coach for life, and I won't even care if we never make the playoffs again. We are going on 90 years so if we win one I'm not going to be greedy for another one.

But it's been 70 years since a coach left A&M for another job, and two since we payed the last one 70 million not to work for us. And that was after paying all the previous coaches for the last 30 years not to coach for us after they flamed out
