If people want to drink that's their business. I have no problem with that. I just choose not to be around it if I don't have to. There are many people in Lumberton who feel the same way. That's why they have been a dry community for so long.

Just gotta add a personal lament. Got married to a Kansas/Okie. Stuck in western BFE Oklahoma. Would give most anything to get back to Beaumont. Don't hate on Beaumont because there are really, really, really worse places to be stuck!

Stone Cold would find me pleasant company, no doubt.

Drinking is a crutch and I find the activity appalling. Stone Cold, we should hang out and do some stuff.

I sense the sarcasm. I get it, I get it.....some of you people like to have a drink every now and then. I'm OK with that. As for me, I choose not to and also choose not to be around it if I don't have to. Mine is more of a religious conviction. Just have never felt the need to do that stuff. I'm more of a sweet tea/Dr Pepper/Seaport Dark Roast man.

SC- That is sad. I can't believe they did that. Are M & P still around or is the daughter running things now?
Stone Cold

M & P still running the show....but, they sold a lot of their property to the Episcopal church on the corner. They went from being wealthy to really wealthy. They now just own the white house behind them. They sold the Downs property to their daughter that lives in Dallas. They are going to build a brand new "vacation" home in the spot where the Downs used to be.

I only run in Red Wings and I will be drunkish.

Don't get embarrassed by me. It will totally kill your abstinence theory.

Abstinence theory? Nah...more like a personal conviction. I guess I could wear my mudboots to make it fair.

I realize this thread is rather old, but I thought I'd bump it to see if anything has changed, or if anyone has changed their opinions. I'm currently talking with a company that would put me in Beaumont, and I'm doing some research to see just what I'd be looking at.

work in beaumont, live in mid county (nederland, pt. neches) 15 min. to beaumont and much nicer place to live. If you have a family or about to start one, then mid county is the place to be.

While partly accurate, BQDad expresses a bias toward mid-county. Yes, it is a good place to live. Likewise, so is Beaumont.

As with any choice to live, one must look around your choices. Living in the right areas of Beaumont, namely the westend, is a good way to go.
Honestly, either the westend of Beaumont, Mid-county, certain areas of Lumberton and a few others are just fine.

Well, the address for the company is almost dead center south Beaumont, so west Beaumont would work. Honestly, even Lumberton would work as google only shows a 20-30 minute commute. I have absolutely no problem with that.

Obviously I'll have to drive around the region when I go for my on-site interview to see for myself where I'd like to be. But you can never be too informed, ya know?

Ok, so it's beginning to look like I may be moving to Beaumont (slightly better than 50-50 odds now).

Who do you guys use for tv/internet/phone/etc? Not entirely certain I'll get a phone line, but I'll definitely need tv and internet, and I'm not sure how the scenario is over there.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
We use AT&T for phone/Dish/dsl. Time Warner Cable made me angry one too many times.

That 20-30 minute commute from Lumberton might be a little longer with morning traffic, but certainly lots of people do it.

vin, you seem to know about those meth labs that were busted out in Fannett. I graduated from HF in 06 and lived on Craigen, and my parents still reside there. Are you from the Fannett area?

Life long Lumberton Boys take on this. (Except for a brief stint in God's country)...Lumberton traffic is terrible. However, this can be avoided by living on the south side of town. There are some new developments cropping up near that side that range from decent price range, to not so decent. From there it takes me 20 minutes to get to Lamar (south Beaumont). Also, property taxes are minimal inside the city due to the lack of a city property tax (still have county, but its minimal). Emergency services have excellent ISO ratings especially considering the price. Lumberton ISD has nice facilities and great rankings. Even sports are looking up. However It is a relatively small town, and that can cause problems, but that can be said of anywhere on here. Now all of that is the only expertise I can offer the rest of this will be opinion. Beaumont, Wanda tv anyone? Also, Beaumont schools are a disaster. Nederland seems to be losing some of its small town feel, and is slowly being moved towards lower class (Don't hate I have family there I love them dearly). Port Neches is nice, but I do not like the thought of an ethylene oxide (or whatever) explosion happening in the next yard. Silsbee smells like Evadale. And, for your safety, bypass P.A. proper and drive around to the plants. Last note; at any home you visit be sure to check if it has flooded!

Dang good advice, thanks. At the moment, if I get the job, I'll probably be staying in an apartment in the North Major/Old Dowlen Road area in north Beaumont. Didn't see a whole lot online as far as living places in Lumberton (and believe me, small towns have a big appeal to me). A few places in Beaumont, but nothing that really catches my eye.

I'm a Lumberton boy myself and have a bias towards it...even though I don't currently live there. But, I'll say that Pt Neches/Groves is also a decent place as my wife has family that lives there. As for Lumberton, if you live anywhere north of the 421 cut-thru you are going to face a heavy amount of traffic each morning from all the folks that live in Boykin, Westchase, Gracelake and other neighborhoods. On the Hwy 96 side of town you could probably take Old Silsbee Hwy to avoid some of the congestion on the main highway. It's a great small town with a great school district. I'm a product of it and would gladly allow my children to attend school there if it was an option right now.

Thanks for the info. It looks like I'll be getting that job (unless something goes horribly wrong), so ya'll have been most helpful.

Looking at Lumberton, there wasn't much that really fit what I was looking for at the moment (just an apartment/rent house). Looks like I'm going to be living in the northwestern corner of Beaumont (up by Dowlen). Overall, I feel pretty good about the situation. One thing I will say, though, is that Lumberton looks like it is going to explode in about 5 years. I used to pass through Frisco before it got really big, and Lumberton looks almost exactly like Frisco, maybe a bit smaller, but here in a few years, that will change in a big way I'd bet.

Again, thanks for the help.

Lumberton has already gone through one population boom back in the mid-late 90's. They have been steadily increasing since then. Still a lot of room out there to grow.

still cant buy a beer in lumberton tho ! And there are no restrictions. 300K house, double wide trailer, 200K house trailer, 100K house, camper. Thats a typical neighborhood in Lumberton. If that was going to change, it would have by now.
Stone Cold
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Obviously, you've never seen the deed restrictions for Gracelake, Stone Gate or Boykin Place. Sounds like you have something against Lumberton.
BQDAD08
How long do you want to ignore this user?
not a thing against lumberton. Actually a nice community. Like anyplace, it has a few nice deed restricted subdiv., but not many. Still lots of trailers next to nice homes everywhere. Almost bought a home in lumberton years ago before it became what it is today, but decided nederland (mid county) was a better place to live and had more to offer.

Dan Hooks is as slimy as they come

Why do you say that?

Coach Hooks is about the only respectable person in all of WOS-ISD & a hell of a coach. Most of his assistants, except for Coach Thompson come & go, Coach Hooks is a fantastic coach & disciplines those boys when they have no else to teach them right from wrong & gives a lot of them hope at getting the eff out of Orange & getting them into many schools to continue their football careers, but most importantly, to continue their education, which he does think is #1. Many times I have seen teachers go directly to him (b/c the principals are usually worthless) to complain about one of his players acting up in class, or not turning in their homework & after a good ass chewing & lots of running, that is the last complaint he will get about that player. He also encourages any special ed kids to be a team member by doing little jobs for them, mainly water boys, but to them, it means so much, especially when they are given game balls by Coach Hooks himself or are given special awards at the athletic ceremonies each year.

I'm sorry, but your comment is just flat out wrong.

I'm referring to his recruiting tactics. They are well known in the coaching community.
