Don't mock the weather! It is the one who mocks. We don't need a mid September.

What's the date that tx has never seen a storm after. Oct 5th or something like that? Probably way off. It was discussed in last year's thread.

Not sure, but I've always heard after the second cold front we're in the clear.

Since record-keeping began in 1851, Texas has been impacted by 5 landfalling hurricanes:

October 1867 Category 2 "Galveston" landfall near Brownsville
October 1886 Category 3 unnamed landfall near TX/LA state line
October 1912 Category 2 unnamed landfall near Padre Island
October 1949 Category 2 unnamed landfall near Freeport
October 1989 Category 1 Jerry landfall on Galveston Island

Would this week's cool front count as the first, or does it have to be a blue norther?

I'm sure it has to be some proximity to the coast to push them east, but I dont know how far south that actually needs to be.

I was wondering that myself.

I think the cold fronts have more to do with lowering water temps than pushing potential storms, right?

Space city uses a metric like that.

I've always just taken it to be timing related. If we're late enough in the year that we're getting those fronts a storm isn't likely. I've never taken their reasoning to mean the cold front itself is actually doing something to stop hurricanes.

Yes definitely but I think with cooler wx comes lower sea temps and that absolutely has something to do with the formation of storms, among other things of course.

I always thought the high pressure behind the fronts are what push the storms away. Once we get the second decent cold front, we usually have a pretty steady stream of them protecting us.

Sept 18th is the date I always look forward to. One of the Space City Weather guys said years ago that is the date where the odds of anything hitting the Houston area drops off considerably.

I'd bet it is a number of things, but I'm not up to date on the meteorological effects of frontal systems.

So far 1 major hurricane and 5 tropical storms:

NOAA has maps that show the origin and track of all known storms for every 10 day period of the year:

https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/climo/#ori10

It looks like September 21 activity really drops off for Texas, and drops to zero after October 21.
That's also the time Pacific storms more commonly turn Northeast and head towards west Texas.
