Here is the latest as of today:
Dear SBISD Families, Staff and Community Members,
I am writing with an update on the Voting Rights Act lawsuit. As mentioned in previous updates, the District has appealed its case to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the trial court paused its decision pending appeal. Today, the Fifth Circuit agreed with the District that the Voting Rights Act cases at the U.S. Supreme Court might change the outcome of the appeal. So, the appeallike the trial court's judgmentis paused while we await those decisions.
As we are now in a holding pattern in the Fifth Circuit, there may not be additional substantive updates for the immediate future. The trial court does plan, however, to decide the amount of attorney's fees the District will owe to the plaintiff if the appeal does not succeed. The District will issue a community update once the case progresses.
You can find all updates regarding the Voting Rights Act lawsuit on the Board Updates webpage, available at this link.

This term in SCOTUS is going to be interesting...which is partially the reason for the 5th Circuit stay.

A couple of the cases being heard have a big impact on the SBISD. The first is a challenge as to who can bring a claim under the VRO.....generally speaking, is it a claim that can be brought by a state actor or a private citizen.

The second case poses the general question of whether we should take into account "majority minority" districts in terms of political districting.

Oral arguments on the second issue...and most likely in impanct SBISD....are on the morning of 10/15. Tune into PBS to listen live.

I read that most school districts in TX are at large the same as SBISD. Doesn't it seem unlikely that the supreme court would rule that they're no longer allowed or discriminatory?

Once you get out into rural areas, there are a lot of relatively compact school districts that only cover one high school, so it's possible that they make up the majority of TX school districts.

Urban areas have vastly more complicated demographics, which led to single-member district representation at various levels of governance. Those rulings mostly applied to specific regions or districts, so it seems unlikely that you would see a blanket ruling that affects all districts, but I'm no expert and wouldn't try to make a prediction.

And an Aggie daughter.

Supreme Court ruling can kill the lawsuit once and for all.
