For a typical conservative Aggie family, which high school do you think kids and parents would be happier at?

I'm in for responses here. I have three little ones and we are currently zoned to Memorial Middle and then Stratford (I think some of MMS goes to SHS and then some to MHS). Our kids are still in elementary school but high school is already on our minds as time seems to fly lately.

From our perspective, both seem like great schools and seem to be the two best public school options in the City of Houston. I think it's a bit of pick your poison when deciding between the two - MHS likely to have more significant social pressure with the general wealth of the area while SHS may be more diverse from a socio-economic perspective which has its pros and cons.

Both schools seem to be full of great conservative families / kids and thus far in elementary school (Wilchester) we've been very happy with the other families / values / etc.

I have a really good friend who teaches and coaches at Memorial. He's said a lot of really good things. I can't speak for Stratford, but just throwing in my two cents.

Do you want your kids to go to the rich public high school or the richer public high school?

Both are good. Memorial is a better school overall (just based on School education). Lots of good Aggie kids going to Stratford. Stratford has its flaws, but it has good people with a good mix of different kids. Your kid can also park on campus when they start driving.

SBISD has also turned over all but one School Board Member (next year), to become one of the most Conservative school boards in Texas. A three year transition supported by the district families, that should see major impacts over the next few years.

We were Winchester, Memorial Middle and Stratford. Of these three schools, the kids hated memorial middle the most, but it did prepare them for high school. If your zoned to these schools, your kids will be a regular kid, the poor kid, and the rich kid as they move from the schools.

Both are good schools, that have a lot of future Aggies.

More/better drugs at Memorial. Both really good schools as has been stated, but Memorial is going to have way more of the trust fund types, for better or worse.

I think that's a common refrain for nearly all middle schools

Don't know if I've ever seen a bad school with a good girls' cross country team. Prove me wrong.

We have had 3 boys graduate from MHS over the last 5 years. Academically IMHO it is an outstanding public school. It is full of good admin and teachers. 95% of the parents and kids we have met over those years are conservative and well grounded.

I knew there would be examples from the past, but now SO much money is put into the sport from starting at a young age that it pretty much is a rich kid sport if you are trying to field a competitive team. Of course there are exceptions and I'm sure talented players at each school no matter what the income level. But winning teams are more likely to be comprised of a full roster of kids that played select-league ball.

No firsthand experiences, but I frequently hear about MHS from my boss. It might be great academically, but it seems like kids can get detached from reality. My boss and her husband probably make at least 700k/yr, they live in a $2m+ house, and their kids think they are poor. Sample size of one, but my boss says they sometimes wish they had bought in an area zoned to Stratford because of this.

ETA: full disclosure we just bought a house zoned to Stratford, but we are too lolpoor to have a choice

Why is this so bad? I'd rather my kids think that they are poor in Memorial than live in Katy and think they are rich and better than everyone else.

Have you ever been around wealthy kids (or wives for that matter) who are top 1% of wealth but complain like they are in the bottom 10%? This is THE drawback to a school like Memorial or private schools, and it's a big one.

One kid just graduated and another still at SHS. Our kids have enjoyed their time there and really like the block scheduling. Like everything else, nothing is perfect but overall it's been great. Plenty of opportunities to be involved regardless of your kid's preference.

MHS runs on a traditional class schedule vs block.

If you're concerned at all about the top 10% auto admin stuff be prepared. Your child will need to be a valedictorian or salutatorian to hit that mark. At SHS they will need to take every advance placement possible and 1 B = salutatorian this year. Pretty sure it's a ***** at all competitive schools but thought I would throw it out. Don't get caught up in it too much. Be involved and it will all work out.

Hahaha… nothing liked regrets of not buying what is probably still a $750k-$1m house to teach your kids some humility and give them some grounding in reality.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. I'd rather my kids have a better sense of what the real world is like and have (more of) an appreciation for the things they have. Thinking you're poor when you're in the top 1% of family income in the US (and probably top 0.1% of people in the history of the world) isn't healthy, IMO. Of course, parenting is a part of it, but when all your friends drive expensive cars and live in multi-million dollar homes, it's hard for a kid to compare themselves against something else.

And ATM9000, I acknowledge the irony. We all have to draw a line somewhere...but also we didn't want to commute from Fulshear. :P

Or….maybe…..between the boss in question and the poster their was an exaggeration and kids coming from a family with an income of $700k/year in a $2mm house don't really think they're poor. But have friends that "make them look poor."

I know, everything on the internet is true, but just a thought.

So I shouldn't strive to earn as much as I can for my family while keeping the work/life balance and try send them to a public school I feel puts them in the best position to make the next move of their choice?

I'm confused with your logic? Should that guy make $700k/year and send them to northbrook or Westside just bc?

There is an additional option of Westchester Academy (WAIS). IB curriculum. It's available to all kids in SBISD so probably a higher percentage of low income but if they are at WAIS it's because the parents are engaged enough to apply for WAIS. Our child just finished their first year at WAIS and we are reasonably happy with it.

Out of touch with reality either way. Those kids need to spend a few weeks working in the sun on a mission trip somewhere, work at the food bank, push a mower for a few summers. Of course they're poor. They're kids. They need to be reminded of that, and they need to understand how little others have, so they don't spend their limited time on this ball trying to impress people in a t.u. sorority, or using their money as a substitute for character, intellect, or love.

Westside seems like a pretty good school. Some people seem to think that a high income and a nice house makes their kids GT. Kind of a dose of reality when they realize you can't buy smart.

We had to play CC Moody in 1993 in a summer league tournament. All I remember is it felt like we were playing a college team.

They are both great schools. Our kids did the Wilchester, MMS, Stratford route. Have had great experiences at each stop.

The block scheduling at Stratford has been great, especially if you have a kid in sports as you get a day off before returning to a specific class which gives you a lot more flexibility as to when you study/do your homework. Principal at Stratford is also a rockstar. Holds his kids and staff accountable for their actions.

That reminds me of the time when my sister told my parents she didnt want to bring friends over because we lived in the poor neighborhood. My dad about blew a gasket. They probably were in the poorest neighborhood zoned to Seven Lakes HS so compared to her classmates she felt insecure. But compared to the rest of the Houston metro, poor is not the right word to use. She was too young to remember the places we lived before moving there.

I grew up in the "poor" neighborhood for my school, which was anything but. However we were next to Pasadena, grew up at an elementary school built on a toxic waste dump, and no other neighborhood was near us that fed the school. By 8 miles. We definitely had a chip on our shoulder.
