T&P for the travesty of turning 70.

Especially if that milestone bday celebration is held somewhere too far from the bypass, and at a place that's "kinda expensive for this town."

I just turned 70. I hope I'm alive to see this finished. And I hope they do a better job with this than they did on the OSR.

I hit 60 day before yesterday, and I wonder if I'll get see it finished…

From the looks of things... TxDOT is into the Big 6 project for at least one generation.

Rusty says the bypass will be closed for an hour Sunday morning at 5:30 between SW Parkway and 2818 exit.

There is a lot of good information on this site:
Project overview

The next 6 months is just laying new pavement to minimize disruption during the project.

The transition lanes are probably the most interesting part of the project though. The Barron exit will now be immediately after crossing 2818, which will lead to the transition lanes, which will travel unencumbered to the next exit to the access road between Graham and Bridle Gate.

Made the mistake of getting on 6 south while running an errand. Santa's Wonderland? Satan's Wonderland more like it.

Central Park and the parade had massive traffic on 6 heading south, north of SW Parkway.

Just FYI:

There is not enough signage on 6 letting you know the speed limit has dropped to 60.

If you drive into College Station on highway 6 from the north or south you will see the signs lowering the speed limit. Other than that, there are only a few signs in each direction showing the speed limit.

The majority of highway 6 entrances don't let you know the speed limit has dropped until you have been driving for a bit. If you are not a local say coming from Huntsville, Somerville, or don't drive 6 very often it would be easy to get a speeding ticket.

I was riding with my son today and we got on 6 and he entered the freeway and was doing just over 70. I said be careful because fines are doubled in construction zones. He said there was no sign showing the speed limit was 60. He was right and he also didn't know the speed limit was lowered. We also noticed there are a lot more on ramps than speed limit signs.

I was on Hwy 6 this afternoon. I entered just south of Fitch heading north. The was a new 60/work zone sign just before crossing Fitch. I tried going 65 and everybody was speeding past me. I had to speed up to not be a hazard.

Its crazy out there.

My kid speeding without knowing made me wonder how many people do not know that its 60 versus just the number of people who don't care and dive at insane speeds regardless. Probably will never know the answer to that one.

I would imagine CSPD and DPS will really be out there after the first of the year. That serves as a bit of a grace period and then we have students returning plus a new batch entering in the spring as transfers. Traffic is always "fun" at the beginning of each semester.

Shhh! That's how they'll pay for the new bypass.

Yup. Mentioned earlier in the thread this would be a problem. Lower speed limits are not necessarily safer because they can create a dangerous disparity in speeds.

Maybe the navigation software said traffic was better going up 35W.

I live in Fort Worth and am from Houston. I always take highway 6 when going back to visit. Depending on what side of town you're going to, it can be 8-10 miles shorter, and it's always less crowded than 45 and 287.

They really need to add 60 MPH signs down the 12 mile stretch and not just at the beginning in each direction. too many entrances and exits between there that people aren't going to notice

AND it is a work zone, so fines will double !

I have driven up and down 6 a half dozen times at least in the past week or so and thus far everyone is ignoring the signs and traffic is still moving along at 75.

Grace period, the new speed limits will be enforced when they begin actual construction on 6.
Stucco

Are you saying CSPD is just not enforcing it until construction begins?

There is nothing in law about a "grace period" for a speed limit, only a justifying safety study, an ordinance and signage.

There's a short YouTube video on this page that is extremely informative- entertaining even. In two minutes you'll get the gist.

And, there's about 22 miles of bike and pedestrian paths as a part of this project… 11 miles in either direction, I think. Bike riders will be able to go from north Bryan to south College Station safely- for those of you that are into that sort of thing.

Thanks for the link!

"Were growing our roads to match our growing community" is a quote from the video. What they should say is, we are (like the city of college station) reactionary and behind. We spend your tax dollars like drunken sailors and only when there is a problem do we try to do anything about it. And then, we still won't be forward thinking.

Example: Harvey road and University drive East of hwy 6. There has been massive growth that direction and they still havent fixed any of it or planned for it. Even when they do work, they do it short-sided and cheaply (i.e. no turn lanes, no widening of the the hwy, no prep for future that is cheaper to build right today than fix tomorrow.

Example: when they changed the exit for south bound hwy 6 going to Harvey road/hwy 30, why did they make it a major death trap? Should have been done right the first time.

Expect this to continue. Saw the same thing on 21 past RELLIS. Now, a squad car(s) presence may help, but at some point the officers need to go on break and some people will resume speeding again.

Yes I am saying that. Not official either, just is.
