As far as I have seen, Grimes County has signed the document but SpaceX has not.

Elon said today they are estimating 100 million square feet. Woah.

That's almost 4 sections of land. Or a square just a bit less than 2 miles on each side.

Roughly 2,300 acres, which would fit within the 6,000 they supposedly acquired.

A 100 million sq ft building would be the largest in the world!

Maybe has to do with the SpaceX update about "other locations" in the running.

That is more than 5x the current largest building in the world. This sounds like a lot of Elons ideas where he makes a wild announcement and reality is…something less. I'm not saying he hasn't done big things, but he is also the king of over promise and under delivering.

Lol, you mean the guy who developed and brought to life:

-- Tesla: the leading EV manufacturer that's widely regarded as best in the market?
-- Starlink: revolutionary, affordable access to internet that millions of rural people love and the Russian military wishes they had?
-- SpaceX: the space program that rescued astronauts from the space station when NASA couldn't get it done?
-- Twitter to X: a reform of public media to allow the full range of expression of speech?

I'll put my bets on Elon and Terafab over the doubters. I won't hold him to everything-single-thing-he-says, but he's got a track record of delivering far beyond what others have thought possible.

To put this into perspective, I think it will be the size of about 10 of the gigafactory in Austin as a reference.

It says in the tweet that it is 10x the size

Yes. The core 6,000 acres has been purchased by WIT Tech, LLC which is essentially an Xai holding company. There's still several thousand acres inside the reinvestment zone not acquired yet, but the core 6,000 acres is what's spec'd in the JETI applications (tax deal for the ISDs) for phases I and II

The question now for SpaceX "is Grimes County welcoming to such a drastic change"?

I don't see that land being easy to sell if they change their mind, which gives me hope this will go through.

The Grimes county concerned citizens Facebook is still melting down over the deal. It is rife with threats of recalls, boycotts of local businesses that have supported it, accusations of bribes, etc.
I just hope there are some enterprising souls who live there that will look at this as an opportunity, not only for themselves but their kids. Brainstorm with them about what those workers will need for the next several years.

Shuttle services from housing developments to work and back to save gas.

24 hour diners. Those shifts will be around the clock and people eat.

Set up an acre close by for food trucks to park.

RV parks.

Auto and heavy equipment repair.

The list is endless.

I'm in Grimes county, and I am thinking about my kids. My taxes will absolutely increase with this deal. Even if the tax rate doesn't increase, my property value will which increases my out of pocket. We make good money and were planning on buying land, but now between the increase in cost of land and the increases in taxes, we are going to stay put. Thankfully, we can afford the taxes going up, even though I hate it, but lots of folks will end up moving out. It will be a replacement of a lot of the Grimes County population, not just an addition.

I would love to have a legacy piece of property for the kids, but I don't think that can happen in Grimes County now.

Do I understand this correctly, TeraFab will produce more electricity than entire US consumption? 1TW vs 0.5TW. Surely this is not just the solar panels on the roof? Or is it accounting for energy production in space as well?

I think we're forgetting that GrimesCo is huge, like 800 square miles. It dwarfs BrazCo which is only 590 square miles with seven times the population.

I think you'll be fine if you want to stay there.

As I understand it, those figures are the amount of power consumed by the chips manufactured in a year. So each year in the US, we currently manufacture the amount of chips that when all powered up would consume 0.5 terawatts of power. Terafab alone will produce twice that number each year.
ooshwa

Interestingly, if all those chips made in a year were turned on at one time, they would consume electricity at more than double the average rate of all electricity consumed in the US (4100 TWh in 2024). That's why we have to send them to space!

Much of the 1TW of computing power will be launched into orbit to build out solar powered data centers in space. So it doesn't directly translate into the need to build out power plants on the ground.

I wonder what 6,000 acres of the 18,188 acres listed in the JETI document is the ones purchased... only ~415 are showing under WIT Tech, LLC.

I wonder what other locations they have bought 6000 acres of land and have access to a lake. I am sure someone would be able to find that somewhere if they truly wanted to look at other spots. Right now I assume this is basically a done deal. The local ISDs will play ball like the county did

It's basically a server rack with solar panels, a radiator for dissipating heat, and laser data connectivity, I think. I recall somewhere Musk says it'll be easier to deploy than starlink satellites.

We shall see. He's already got the rockets to carry the payload up there, of course.

He said that in the interview linked above. The other guy sitting in the interview was one of the leads on the Starlink team, and the comment was - the solar array on the data center is essentially the same as on the Starlink V3 satellite. All the tech for the "Space data center" is already done. It's just a matter of getting the rocket(s) rapidly reusable so they can increase the launch cadence and get those suckers up there.

Fascinating. You know, there's a lot of good and a lot of challenges in this- but as one member of council and an Aggie- I find it absolutely extraordinary that we could be the region responsible for helping put data centers in space and out of our neighborhoods… cooled by space and powered by solar- instead of our water and electricity.

That is a laudable goal. If that happens, it could dwarf the most famous economic regions in the country like North Carolina's Research Triangle Park, or even California's Silicon Valley. Imagine manufacturing more semiconductor chips than all of Taiwan, right here in central Texas while all but eliminating the Chinese threat of cornering the world's compute market. It boggles the mind.

Jobs, prosperity, a powerhouse economic region and national security. Right here in Aggieland. Things like this just don't happen, and maybe this won't. Who knows? But if it does, it has strategic implications for this region that I still think many don't comprehend.

We shall see. Respectfully

lol. Elon dares to dream and does it out loud for the rest of us to hear. Then he goes and does something we've never thought possible and you're complaining because what actually happened is less than what he dared to dream. Never mind that it's eleventy billion times bigger than what anyone else has accomplished in that area already. This is the most transformational person probably of this century and you're complaining.

You seem really hung up on complaining for some reason. I understand people have a weird obsession with musk and think he can do anything in the world, but the fact stands that while he obviously does big things, he has a habit of being a bit grandiose when he talks.

FYI - there is an auto factory in Russia that is 65,000,000 sq ft - AvtoVAZ main assembly building. It is currently the largest building by floor area. Wikipedia has a Chinese building as the 2nd at 33,798,680 sq ft.

I'm not hung up on anything I just tire of people along this complaint. I'm extremely results oriented and it's an indisputable truth that he's done things you and I haven't ever even dreamed of. Your real complaint is that he dreams out loud. For example, if he didn't tell us he would conquer self driving by X year you'd be amazed today that he's done it. Instead you criticize the timeline it actually happened vs what he projected. It sounds petty when we're talking about huge ideas nobody has ever succeeded at before. It's not like he's building a house and said 6 months then took 8. He's built a car that drives millions of miles a day without human intervention, that it took 10 years instead of 6 seems inconsequential and it's petty to complain about that. With dreamers you have to follow the vision and admire the results, not criticize the result when "better than we've ever seen" isn't as absurd as they originally imagined.

My $.02, worth what you paid for it.
