It occurred to me during the game that we built our secondary with box safeties and man corners. Now they are playing these loose zone concepts and are clearly lost.

Yeah I think the biggest thing is that our defense isn't actually THIS bad, they are just playing in the wrong scheme, which is on coaching.

Definitely Love. He seems like a do-it-all back. That one-handed catch in stride he made for the TD was pretty spectacular.

Yeah I love me some Donovan Wilson but asking him to cover deep middle third of the field doesn't feel like playing to his strengths

How is he in SOFT zone coverage?

I mean probably not much worse than who we have. He's at least smart and has played in multiple schemes in his career, but yeah he's more of a man corner like the guys we already have.

The Cowboys just signed Jadeveon Clowney to a 1 yr deal. He have anything left in the tank?

I can't remember a play he's made since he knocked that defenders helmet off in the bowl game.

Clowney had 9.5 sacks and 9 TFLs in Baltimore in 2023 and 5.5 sacks and 9 TFLs in Carolina in 2024. We're not bringing in anything crazy but he'll 100% help this team. We're super young and inexperienced on the edges right now.

Clowney said his production dropped last year at Carolina because they had him drop back in coverage a lot of the time and Schottenheimer told him that won't be the case in Dallas. He will be used as a pure pass rusher and that's one of the things that made him choose the Cowboys. Hopefully he can make an impact on third downs.

Clowney can def still play. He's no Parsons but he's a good NFL DE. He will help.

I'm more worried about the back end. The S Position has to get figured out and quick.

I really believe that Eberflus just needs to get his head out of his ass and adapt what he does to the players we have. No **** Donovan Wilson can't play single high safety, that's not what he's built for. All of us and our dogs could've told him that. Same with not getting pressure with only four lineman. Any of us could see that we weren't getting home with four most of the game, so you're going to have to bring a fifth and or a sixth in situations to get Wilson off his spot. Saturday felt like more coaching malpractice than anything.

The defense isn't going to be great this year, but they aren't as inept as we saw on Sunday. That was high school level misunderstanding of what the coach was trying to do, and the coach not changing things up to make it easier on his guys.

So, why is he our DC again?

That's an optimistic view.

The pessimistic view would be that he couldn't stop the Eagles either until the rain came and stopped both offenses. Take out the second half of football against the Eagles where both offense were terrible because of weather, and he's given up 61 points in 3+ halves.

Not disagreeing at all. I think he's been super poor to begin the season. And just to reiterate I also believe and understand that we aren't that that talented in areas of the defense, but the way he's calling the defense and using players is pretty dang head scratching in some scenarios.

Just reinforcing what the eye test suggests, that Dak has been the best QB in the league through the first two weeks

This is tiresome. Yes, Dak has had is playoff failures but so have other QBs. Let's first agree that wins and losses on a QB's resume, while not irrelevant, are highly dependent upon things out of their control. For that reason, simply talking about wins and losses does require nuance.

Omitting the young guys (less than 5 playoff games played), here are some notable 'top teir QBs' and their playoff rating:

Dak 91.8
Burrow 93.8
Hurts 95.6
Lamar 84.6
Herbert 60.7 (I know he only has 2 games but he is regularly regarded as a better QB than Dak and the numbers just don't support this in any way)
Goff 85.1

Obviously, guys like Mahomes, Allen are in a league of their own which is why I didn't bring them up.

maybe you missed the winky face emoji, so I'll double down here.

I also saw a statistic similar to that above for defenses and whether they use zone v. man, and the Cowboys are dead last in the NFL in their use (or lack thereof) of man coverage. I understand that zone is a better way to play defense in the NFL because of just how good individual talent is at that level, but I legitimately think we've had maybe one or two defensive snaps in man coverage this season so far.
