I look forward to my tariff refund check. You know, the one that covered the increased cost paid at the register as the companies passed the tax on to me.

This is flat BS. This is massive grift to importers that will be abused just like the PPP loans and COVID money.

The minute the feds start having to hand out cash the grifters will find ways to get rich.

I will continue to say this is a nothing burger in grand scheme of things factoring both inflows of tariff revenue and outflows of tariff refunds.

It's noise and churn that will do absolutely nothing to change the trajectory of our debt.

Yeah, we'll see. At some point, a straw breaks a camel's back. We keep heaping on straws. And $150B to $200B is more than a straw. It's about 3.5% of annual federal tax revenue. A normal family on an already tight budget that gets with 3.5% increased spend feels the pain.

Yes or no.

Should the entity that paid an improper tax get a refund?

This is very different from PPP or Covid.

These are refunds for government fees that the courts ruled as illegal. It is simply getting their own money back that never should have been taken from them.

Whether they passed those fees onto others and if those others are entitled to a refund from them is a whole different question and will depend on the contractual arrangements between those parties.

I guess when you are already resigned to the deficit never getting addressed, like me, then another $100-200B per year just means the inevitable collapse happens a few days, weeks, months sooner than it would have.

In theory? Sure.

Now go track that money and make certain that the entity that actually paid the tax gets their money back.

I'll sit back and wait while you work that little detail out.

So you will complain and do nothing? Shocker!

Try reading. That's not an issue for the courts. Thats importer and consumer. Not all importers passed on that cost.

There's no need to wait. It's very simple... the entity that actually paid the tariff is getting their money back. That's how the courts are administering this.

The entities downstream from that person who might "feel" like they indirectly paid the tariff when the first entity passed it onto them... that's a different question. In some cases, the second entity refused to pay a higher price to compensate for the tariff. Why should they now get a "refund" for something they never paid an extra nickle for?

In other cases, the second entity did pay a higher price because of the tariff, indirectly. Whether they get this refund will depend on the contract they had with the first entity. If it clearly states they get tariff refunds, then they will. If the contract is quiet on the topic, then it can become a matter of negotiation between the first and second entities. And those negotiations will yield very different results, depending on the commercial power of each entity.

There is no "one size fits all" answer here.
