I wanted to avoid knowing as much as I could about the movie before I saw it. I thought it was really good. One thing I thought was odd though was that aside from Ryan, no white guy had any speaking parts or even did anything.

I'm pretty anti-woke, but that's a weird thing to notice. One major aspect of the book is that it's an all-in from humanity. Stratt has the ultimate authority of every government and any expert that exists on the planet. A diverse cast is sort of a requirement. Heck, in the book they're on a Chinese aircraft carrier, not American.

I guess I have to spell out that I know it's a global effort. LOL

And yet you still think it was odd that, aside from the lead of the movie, no other white guy did anything?

Btw, the voice actor for Rocky is a white guy that grew up in Richardson, TX.

Best opening weeekend for a non-franchise, non-sequel movie since Oppenheimer.

I think it's odd that it's assumed there's no other white guys outside the US. This room is quite interesting. Like the guy who thinks that there's going to be enough Aggies in the world that it would be weird not to have at least a couple of Aggies in the cast of any global project.

Would nuking Antarctica be a climate change lecture? Or paving over the Sahara?

You're right. It's not realistic that the smartest scientists in the world are not white males.

Bad bad bad movie.

They should have kept Rocky and the ship out of the trailers. My brother gave me the book a couple of years ago and i went in blind to the fact that it was going to involve an alien. It was one heck of a jaw dropper when the ship showed up.

My buddy has been telling me this for months. Really annoyed they gave it away in the trailers.

Especially because you could have deked the audience with the idea that "we're not alone" and the "aliens' being the microbes on the Petrova Line that are unfortunately killing the sun; even had the little celebration by Gosling in the lab that this is first contact. Then the real stuff later is a jaw dropper for the general audience

I noticed that too but only because they casted Ken Leung as the Chinese astronaut and essentially benched him with I believe a single line? And the worst part is they made him say it in a fake Chinese accent when he's American AF lol. He's a supporting actor on HBOs "Industry" and is PHENOMENAL. I don't know why you cast him to not give him anything to do. Unlike the ATT chick who literally has no acting chops lol.

AT&T girl was good in the things I've seen her in.
Someone mentioned her accent. Russian was her first language.

Haha gotcha. Well Ken Leung is a real actor who can flex on screen. Just thought he was grossly overqualified for the role he was actually given. First time I saw him I thought he was gonna be a bigger contributor.

I think a lot of their scenes ended up on the cutting room floor.

The character in the book was Chinese, it Chinese American.

Ken Leung not only figured out how to destroy the oscillator at Starkiller base, but he also can talk to recently dead people and both he and his dad were in the Dharma Initiative. You want a guy like that around when the sheet hits the fan.
