Went to see it on the IMAX, really liked it, but think I liked the Martian more as a direct comparison of works by Andy Weir.

Would have appreciated more science, especially before leaving Earth and more of Rocky's abilities with the xenoite, and to see him almost accidentaly kill Rocky by putting out the fire.

Shields up!
and the Phantom Zone reference from Superman II got huge laughs from me and mine.

Edit to add the soundtrack really made the movie. Hope it gets Oscar buzz next year

Just saw it and loved it! I didn't know anything about the story before going in.

In the book, did they explain how or why Grace survived when the other two astronauts died? What killed them? And what triggered the robot to wake him up then? Other than to start the story.

I assumed the computer woke him up because he was arriving at the destination. I'm sure it was set up to wake them a week or so before they arrived so they could prepare.

While they didn't go into specifics about what killed the other two astronauts they did mention that the induced coma was dangerous and there were no guarantees it would work.

In the book, you had to have a gene to survive the coma. All three had it. But the robot was keeping them alive and it was still high risk that they would not survive. It was a a Hail Mary.

The robot woke him up from his coma because they were nearing the destination.

The amnesia was because Grace said he would refuse to do anything if they made him go.

This is dumb and stupid, but I saw the movie last night. When I slept I had thelis weird moment in a dream that I got Roger Staubach's autograph.

Hail Mary, indeed

Does the book go into any detail about the learning curve of being out in space and on a spacecraft you have never been on with almost zero training?

Yes. Main thing in the book is that the spaceship controls are super simple. I imagined it as an iPad with some sliders to control the engines and all of the equipment.

The other thing is that Grace is much more involved in all aspects of the project. He's Stratt's second in command and is directly involved in training the astronauts. There's a scene in the book where he's in the giant pool in the spacesuit at NASA working on some equipment the astronauts will need to use.

And in the book Grace is basically a genius.

So between Grace being super smart, training and working alongside the astronauts for a really long time, the simplicity of the ship controls, an quite a bit more time of the amnesia in space with him figuring things out gradually it didn't feel silly that he was able to get the astronaut stuff figured out.

Yep, and while he didn't know who he was or why he was there, he had all his knowledge. "Hey, I"m pretty good at EVA."

In the book it is explained that the amnesia is not a side effect of the coma, but purposely given to him because he didn't want to go. The amnesia drug designed by the French was specifically made for torture in that you forget your self but not your knowledge or training.

Correct and they do this because Grace threatens to sabotage the mission when he wakes up from his coma.

Yes, it feels like the script didn't focus enough attention on this aspect of Grace's character. When we meet Grace, he's teaching middle schoolers and he seems like just a really funny smart guy who likes teaching. We realize as the book goes on how brilliant he is. Well, if he's so smart, why is he stuck at an unremarkable middle school? Because he's a disgraced genius that has been shunned by his peers because of a controversial paper. Not unlike other geniuses in history, actually. The movie only hints at this without letting us see the true level of Grace's intellect like the book does.

So how does the book end? Does Grace ever go back to Earth or is he happy living in Erid in his bubble?

Before seeing this film I was lamenting that there hadn't been a film worthy of seeing in a theater in months and was wondering if movies as good as ET would ever be made again. I had seen the trailers for PHM but didn't know much about it other than it was Sci-Fi and later that it was based on a book by the author of The Martian.

On Friday my 15 yr old daughter asked if she could go to the movies with her BF and they were going to see an animated film. When she got back she said they missed out on the movie they were going to see and had to see PHM. I asked her if it was any good and she raved about it and said it was funny which I thought was odd coming from her and a sci-fi film which she typically has no interest in.

The next day my 17 year old son who thinks Interstellar is the greatest film of all time asked me if I would go to see PHM with him and I agreed and took him to Alamo DH and we both loved it. After coming home and raving about it my wife was disappointed she missed out so she went to a Sunday screening by herself and also raved about it.

This is the first time that has ever happened where a movie became a must see in our family and every one of us loved it. Hollywood please take note and make more of this.

Also noticed there were no Aggies in the movie. Gosling = anti-Aggie

Btw, the voice actor for Rocky is a white guy that grew up in Richardson, TX.

Best opening weeekend for a non-franchise, non-sequel movie since Oppenheimer.

Would nuking Antarctica be a climate change lecture? Or paving over the Sahara?

They should have kept Rocky and the ship out of the trailers. My brother gave me the book a couple of years ago and i went in blind to the fact that it was going to involve an alien. It was one heck of a jaw dropper when the ship showed up.

My buddy has been telling me this for months. Really annoyed they gave it away in the trailers.

Especially because you could have deked the audience with the idea that "we're not alone" and the "aliens' being the microbes on the Petrova Line that are unfortunately killing the sun; even had the little celebration by Gosling in the lab that this is first contact. Then the real stuff later is a jaw dropper for the general audience
