Post anything and everything about the movie here.

if you post without spoiler tags on the other thread i will hunt you down and make you wish you had posted on this thread.

is that a threat? No.
Is it a promise? Don't find out.

This movie ruled. Once you accept the idea that this GQ model looking actor is supposed to be portraying a quirky, nerdy, scientist, Ryan Gosling is perfect in this role. Everything about this movie hinges on his performance and he's nails. Space is dope.

This movie was so great. Didn't mind the few changes.

Meryl Streep part was hilarious.

Fist my bump.

Adam Savage (Mythbusters) explores the sets and models used for PHM. Really fun, might be some minor spoilers so I put it here rather than in the main thread.

Getting a little spoilerish in the other thread.

Things I liked:

-Package exchange, wish they kept the wave from the book.
-Adrian scene. It was a little grainy on our imax screen. The rest were crystal clear though.
-Telling grace he can go home.
-Kinda glad they didn't nuke Antarctica, keep all that climate change stuff out of it.

Things I didn't like:
-spaceship "chase" scene, a little silly
-Milana Vayntrub's accent
-A little conflicted on strat surviving at the end. In the book she was pretty clear what would happen to her. I appreciated the mystique of how humanity survived in the book.

Wife and I saw it last night. Just a normal screen I think, not a big movie goer anymore. Wife knows nothing about the book and said she enjoyed it.

The theater was weird in that it went straight from the ads to him waking up. Not sure if that was intentional or they messed something up. I thought it was a trailer at first.

Thought it was pretty good. That most of the things they cut from the book were well thought out and details that could be cut without taking from the story

Felt like they were a little lacking on explaining how the astro****e worked. The classroom scene was good. But felt there needed to be another meeting type scene at the labs that explained how its storage capabilities could be used as a fuel. They kind of covered it, but seemed more glossed over than it should have been for as important as it was.

Otherwise any of my gripes are minor. It was very well done and Gosling was really good.

Loved it.

Would've been better with a longer run time. Of course they're making it for a wide audience, not for me so not saying they should've done anything different.

I think it would probably take about four hours to make a perfect adaptation. I thought they made good choices with what they omitted.

Places I would've liked more depth if they had longer:

- longer time with the amnesia in space and figuring out he was in another solar system

- a little bit more on astro****e, don't need to get too technical but lay out the stakes a little better

- more of Stratt being Stratt

- some time with him training the astronauts and some more character development for the astronauts; I think they could make a stronger case about why he was the only person who could replace Dubois without getting into the coma resistance stuff

- a little more time with the taumoeba threat and Grace's decision to sacrifice himself and save Rocky

Thought for turning it into a 2.5 hour movie they did awesome.

Ppl who are much smarter than me.

Why did it take Grace 11 yrs to get there but it was only going to take him 4 yrs to get home?

Relativity. 4 years of his time but 11 years on Earth.

Needed more Rocky, seemed more a team in book, it was more Grace saving and Rocky helping in movie.

Why did they build breeder tanks before knowing about the nitrogen issue?

My biggest complaint though, is leaving out the scene where Grace finds out after 15 years of waiting that Earth is saved, that his mission was a success

Otherwise, very enjoyable movie

They still needed to get more. The breeder tanks weren't only to build up nitrogen resistance.

Incredible. What a faithful adaptation.

The only thing I wish they would have changed - aged Ryan Gosling at the end to match the book. Show a bit more how much time had gone by and talked about how much they did to help grace find a home there.

Saw it last night with the family and my daughters friend. My son and I had read the book.

We all loved it. Everyone fell in love with Rocky. When he got hurt my wife turned to me and said "tell me he's ok or I get up and walk out" I want sure if she meant the movie theater or our marriage so I told her he'd be fine.

Who knew that Harry Styles song would be perfect to sing before a suicide mission to space?

Love the Close Encounters reference, I wonder how many people got that? It didn't get a reaction in my theater.

The ship tumbling reminded me of Ryan Gosling playing Neil Armstrong in First Man during the Gemini 8 Agena sequence. Weird tumbling space ship and Gosling connection there.

I have not read the book. 16yo son and I saw it last night. He is a chronic critic, so he nitpicked some details but thought it was still a good movie. I was thoroughly entertained. Good story with good acting, and not too heavy on the technical details.

Although as an old I could not help draw some similarities between this story and Enemy Mine, just a much different story arc.

He modeled his performance after Val Kilmer in Real Genius even down to the quirky t-shirts.

Enemy Mine is very underrated. Lou Gossett's performance has surprising depth. Thanks, now I'm going to have to rewatch.

I saw it at Alamo last night and before the trailers started to run they showed a lengthy interview with Gosling discussing the movie. He said Real Genius and Kilmer's performance was a major influence on him as a kid and when he got the script that was what he was going for and he insisted on the t-shirts.

Loved it. Questions for those who read the book. Did they explain more about Grace rescuing Rocky and the trip back to Erid? Sounds like there was some narrative on him staying there and the world they built for him? And he finds out 15 yrs later his mission saves earth (according to a previous poster) through a message I guess?
Cinco Ranch Aggie
How long do you want to ignore this user?

There was more scientific explanation for how Grace was able to see Rocky's ship before he embarked on the rescue. And as I recall, Weir spelled out that the Eridians built this "home" for Grace rather than the reader having to figure it out. But I suppose that explanation was needed via the written word, as opposed to visually being able to spot those walls of xenon in the film.

Yes. There are while additional story lines and details on that stuff. Literally chapters.

They figure out earth made it by monitoring Sol's brightness.

If you liked the movie, the book is worth a read.
Gnome Sayin
How long do you want to ignore this user?
From what I remember from the book there was quite a bit more of how he went back to save Rocky:
-fuel and trajectory
-how much food he had left, Didn't figure out how to extend food supplies til after he reached Rocky
-nothing really on the trip to Erid, as soon as grace reaches rocky's ship and determine how to feed grace the chapter ends and the following one they're already back on Erid
-The erid scientist determine that the Sun (Sol) returned to it's original brightness, not a message from Earth.

But since he was coma'ed before he would have planned, who packed his wardrobe for the journey?

I just got back from watching it on IMAX. I read the book, and I think it is as faithful to the book as it could realistically be. I really enjoyed it. To me it had a real '80s movie feel to it.

The theater I was at was almost completely full. I get that it's opening weekend, but I haven't seen that many people in a movie theater in a long time. Definitely before COVID.

His space wardrobe was basically his air craft carrier/base wardrobe. So someone packed whatever he packed to take to the base.
