I don't have a huge emotional connection with Rob Reiner, but I was one of the dozens of people who saw Spinal Tap 2 in the theater a few months ago, and I downloaded it from Apple for full price. That movie was comforting to me during a tough time.

He had a great body of work. It sucks that this is how his life ended.

How was that? I still haven't watched it and now it may be tough. May need to wait.

I introduced my adult son (30) to the original a few months ago and he loved it. We kind of bonded over it as we are both classic rock fans anyway and he proudly now wears a "These Go To 11" t-shirt with the amplifier knobs.

Absolute legend, can't think of another director who could do so many completely different genres with absolute mastery.

Haven't watched the Spinal Tap sequel yet but it's definitely going to hit a bit differently. He will be missed.

Awful way to go to be betrayed and murdered by your own son. Terrible.

Of course his directorial career is magnificent, but i really liked his few spots as Jess's dad on New Girl. This is really sad

Crazy sad. Just re-watched "Wolf on Wall Street" a couple days ago. Totally forgot he had that prominent of a role in that movie.

The movie was okay at best. Every now and then I find some movie or TV show with a couple of old men living their lives that really hits a good spot. Things like "Grumpy Old Men", "The Kominsky Method", "Lonesome Dove" and "Spinal Tap 2" are examples.

He played, of all things, a semipro QB in The Rockford Files. His character was easy to root against in that episode. He made Angel look halfway decent.

The Princess Bride and When Harry met Sally are two of my all time favorite movies and had a profound impact on me as a teenager.

There is a scene in When Harry.. where Billy Crystal and Bruno Kirby are at the giants game, and Harry is discussing the brutal breakup of his marriage. It's this dark and darkly funny convo that is punctuated by them repeatedly pausing to do the wave as it comes through their section of the stadium. That is such a brilliantly written and directed scene and it's so funny to have this guy say "she said I don't know if I EVER loved you" then stand up for the wave.

His Albert Brooks doc on HBO was hysterical and such a lovely insight into their friendship growing up together.

Spinal Tap, to this day, is an absolute favorite. No matter what kind of mood i'm in, that movie makes me laugh.

The band having their bad reviews read back to them by Reiner - my lordt - funniest scene ever. Master class in comedy.

I'm late to the news, and thought it couldve been natural causes. But seeing Reiner over the decades, most recently on The Bear, he always provided great comedic value. He was an underrated director, and by all accounts a good decent person.

I can only imagine the pain his family going through.

That movie is an absolute master class in how to frame conversations and make it interesting.

There are many different simple settings and creative little things.
- car
- restaurant the famous fake orgasm scene of course
- ball game
- bookstore
- park
- new years party

It evokes the passage of time as well. Almost nothing ever happens in that movie except people talking. And it's great.

Such a classic scene! One of the most underrated...it's part of the end credits...Marty DiBergi asking Nigel what he would be doing if he wasn't in a rock band, etc. Nigel answers in a twisting confusing fog of a tangent about being a haberdasher or shoe salesman or whatever, even mixing in sample questions he'd ask his customers.

Marty says something like...do you really think you could do that? (To me, what makes the movie so iconic is how Marty and the whole Tap universe just takes everything at face value and treats it seriously no matter how insane it is)

Nigel kind of shrugs and says "well, what are the hours?"

The Princess Bride and When Harry Met Sally are both in my top 10 movies of all time.

It's funny how everyone always talks about the diner scene, but that is probably my least favorite part of the entire movie. There are so many better moments in that entire movie... literally every other scene, lol.

He had a small role in "When Harry Met Sally", right? Did he also direct that one?

I stand corrected, it's here and free but probably not 100% legal:

his role in Wolf of Wall St was apparently pretty accurate. You can hear him going all "Mad Max" in the background here
