Caden Sorrell - Stay for a big NIL deal

I think Caden has a lot of work to do this off-season as a hitter and would greatly benefit from another year in the SEC. He regressed this year and looked a bit clueless at times as a hitter. And when he misses, he tends to miss big. 25% strike out rate is NOT improving if you go single A minor league baseball. Go ask Jace who is struggling in single A this season so far but improving recently.

Take a big NIL deal and give us one more year! A win - win for everyone.

Thoughts?

I really don't see what he can gain from a developmental standpoint by staying. Probably better to go start the clock and move to wood.

Only to be screwed by the MLB next year? Best for him (not to mention our allocation of funds) to begin his professional career as a day 1 draftee.

I don't think OP understands how the MLB draft works. If you come back for your senior year you lose all of your leverage for negotiating. Draft slots in MLB aren't guaranteed money like the NFL is. If you have the threat of going back to school then they have to pay you what your draft slot is worth…if you have used up all of your eligibility then the MLB teams know you have no choice but to sign and will low ball your offer by hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Example: Jake Mangum for Mississippi State decided to stay for senior year in 2019 and then got drafted in 4th round with a slot value of $487k…he was forced to sign for just $20k

Partida isn't draft eligible until after the following season. So the answer next year is NOBODY.

Pretty sure LaViolette had a higher whiff rate than Sorrell and still went in the first round.

5 tool players like these guys don't grow on trees.

OP why your making wishes can you ask for the following:

- Friday night starter
- Two strong middle relievers
- A lockdown closer
- A first round OF
- A first round 2B or 1B
- A catcher that hits over .300 and limits the running game

I think that should cover it.

I don't know what the young arms didn't show to get a shot but, IMHO, we'll need at least 5 arms- 2 starters, a closer, and 2 middle relievers.

OF will see Kiel, Wilson, and I expect one of the younger guys step up but we'll need a transfer there.

I can see us going after a C in the portal.

At first, you have to figure out if Bindy is going to go pro. 2B will be Farr next year unless he enters the portal but I have no indication he'll do that.

Please elaborate how Earley will make him any better if he stays (which he's gone). His issues need to be fixed at the next level.
My critique if what he's bad at.
1 defense he's awful at balls hit in front of him.
2. He's a big league leftfielder (Naquin with less arm more speed)
3. Too many swing and misses like Naquin unless he learns to make contact he'll be on the bench like Naquin.
4. He's got to work on base running and bunting to be a complete player.

Hacopian looks to be the best pro player as he rarely strikes out and puts the ball in play. Unfortunate he was hurt all year and never 100%. This skill will be a plus for him that he can be counted on to not swing and miss.

It's actually not a good look saying he is not ready and needs one more year under the coach that he's been playing for already for three years. Especially with the amount of talent Sorell has.

Hey super talented high school recruits. Come here and after 4 years your great talent might be realized.

Nope…2nd round.

Latest draft boards have Hacopian as a first rounder; Sorrell as a 2nd rounder and Grahovac as a late 2nd/3rd rounder

It's easier to collect nil then go through the mlb farm system.

Honestly to me, Gravin is the better prospect. Good size and athleticism, can hit for power/average, play plus defense multiple positions.

Sorrell is all of those things except at a premium defensive position, he'll go before Gavin but they'll both be high draft picks

Need pitching…starters and depth. Theres a couple good HS recruits on the way, but Earley needs to balance spend or increase on pitching (injuries limited the team due to lack of depth and development).

Eliminating Kelly only buying some time for Earley at the moment.

I don't think Sorrell can be a full time CF at the next level, I think he'll be locked into a corner spot. I won't be surprised if Caden goes before GG, but I can tell you that I don't think there's 30ish spots between them. And while I'm not in the locker room and weight room every day I think I'd want GG on my team 100x out of 100 first. I've never once questioned, "was that full effort?" "could he have gotten to that?" from Gavin.

Hacopian is better than both of them as a pro. Gavin and Sorrell strike out too much now what are they gonna do at the MLB level.

Next year, second base should be Kellner, and then find a natural SS. A good GG often saved his throws to first.

I agree. Jace is still having high strikeout issues in the pros.

The Strikeout Struggle
  • The Numbers: LaViolette has struck out in roughly \(45\% - 50\%\) of his early at-bats in pro ball.
Hoping this trend doesn't mean Wilson does the same.

Caden needs to do whatever is better for Caden.

If it happens to benefit us then great, if not, I wish him well.
I don’t get enough credit for the things I manage not to say.

I think all our projected high draft round choices should hold back another year. Call Kent and LaViolette and see how "A" ball and "A" life is working out so far. College ball and NIL money might look pretty good while you hone your skills.
