Bucky has been saying we'll either shot 3's or easy 2's in the paint.. he didn't lie

46 pts in paint
33 pts from 3
17 from FT line
= 96 pts of the 98… made ONE shot that was not a 3 or from paint.

He was visibly pissed when Clemence took that midrange jumper late

I saw that as well, laughed when it happened, and I turned to the person I was watching the game with and told him that Bucky was probably angry at that shot

I was gonna post that I only remember one shot, and that Clemence shot was it. I thought, Bucky ain't gonna like that one!

From a purely analytic perspective, you should never be taking mid range jump shots at any level of basketball. Apart from beating the buzzer/shot clock every attempt should be a dunk, layup, floater/hook in the paint or a three.

Not upset but just curious as to why? I think we need a little better athletes at some spots to make it better but it is pleasing to watch.

I just wish sometimes in the half court they wouldn't gamble on steals as much but everything else was good

Data people hate floaters too. Think Jay Wright was one of the first coaches to outright tell his guys not to shoot them but they're one of the least efficient shots in basketball.

It depends on the player, over the last decade or so guards are routinely hitting >50% on such attempts and NBA league average is about 7% higher than two point shots outside the paint. It's a way more efficient shot for the players who are good at it than mid range jumpers.

Over an entire population of players yeah midrange is inefficient. You can't live off them. That said it's not an inefficient shot for everyone

Well yeah NBA players are better at it I'm just talking about college basketball. One of the data nerds made a whole video about it lately but now I can't remember which one.

If you're a basketball purist, you probably feel like this isn't how the game was intended to be played.

Personally I think playing fast builds basketball IQ and I expect us to look like a well oiled machine down the stretch. The guys don't even have much chemistry built up yet. We could be a lot of fun by seasons end

NWSt was overwhelmed but a lot of our passes into the paint leveraged them not being as tall/athletic. I enjoyed the game but wondered how the offense works against longer teams.

That's a good point... These games against small schools usually make our bigs appear better than they are... especially if our guy is relatively undersized for major conference basketball.. Ex) Coleman... He tore up small school competition generally speaking..

You really don't know what you have with the bigs until conference play...

8 of the SEC teams that played last night scored 90+. I'm tempering my expectations for the season. An at-large bid for this season would be incredible given the starting point.

If the team can get healthy and continue gelling, I like the chances of maybe a top 8 SEC finish. From what I hear about Bucky, he is into the details and has a good staff to grow the team.

Yes, but as Nate Oates may realize someday, teams can pack the paint and defend the perimeter and leave the mid-range wide open. Good defensive teams can push those shooters back another step and turn 40% into 30%. Assuming 40 3-point shots, that's a difference of 12 points that has to be made up. Assuming one extra miss get and offensive rebound and a put-back, that's 10 points to the negative. The point is, you have to be willing and able to make elbow jumpers deep in the torunament.

Never take the midrange seems to ignore the situation. If it's a tight game and it's the only open shot you can get that's different than up by 30 with time remaining on shot clock.

The thing about offensive analytics is the defense is privy to the data as well.

Mid range jumpers are low value shots, so the defense leaves them open.

I think most here are really freaking out, because they actually enjoyed watching the game. The reality is that getting in the tourney this season is a tough mission.

Yes and no, IMO. If you're going to drop what we dropped to bring in the talent that we brought in, we should at least be pretty close to the tournament.

And therefore they become higher value.

Looks like we will at least have a fun team

Really Deep SEC this year and our team is all new except one, expectations tempered until we play Sunday.
