Found two older Glenmorangies yesterday, an Astar and a Tusail, brought both home with me.

Some friends invited us to stay with them in Telluride for the next few days. Wanted to bring him a bottle as a small token of appreciation. Any recommendations for something in the $70-$80 range?

Any idea what he usually drinks?

Right off the bat I'd say Glenglassaugh Sandend for something that isn't from one of the big name distilleries.

I'm not sure he's an "afficianado" so it doesn't need to be real exotic.

ETA: I myself, really enjoy scotch but don't have near the level of expertise yet as you and others on here - still have a LOT to learn. I'm not familiar with this one but have added it my list of ones I want to try.

Easy to find favorites in that price range for me are Macallan 12 Sherry Cask and Oban 14. I love both. Between the two it just depends on if I'm in the mood for sherry.

If you jump back to page 46 of this thread, my commentary about Sandend is there. gWhisky, Whisky Vault and others have YouTube videos talking about it, and it got Whisky Advocate #1 of 2023. I err on the side of smoke and peat but this is good, and when I mentioned my wife was going to love Sandend in that older post, oh man did she ever. Still have 3 bottles tucked away in a closet for her, but it is readily available on shelves, I just hoarded at the time of the #1 ranking once I got to try it in fear of it going the way of the dodo bird at MSRP.

Well it seems the 15 year old Ardbeg Anthology will not be available in the US, which makes sense judging by how much of the 13 and 14 year I am still seeing on the shelves. Still stinks as I need this last release for the vertical. Maybe some makes it in...

Total Wine Concierge website has a new Compass Box offering called Brulee Royale, tasting notes look intriguing:

OUR TASTING NOTES: The nose is pure pastry shop seduction: buttery, creamy, bready richness that immediately calls to mind the finest French patisserie in full swing. Just as you settle into these comforting notes, a secondary wave arrives with vanilla, caramel, and the kind of sweet spice that makes you think someone's been wielding a kitchen torch. On the palate, those teasing aromas deliver on their promise: silky vanilla custard from the ex-bourbon maturation mixes and mingles with crackling toffee flavors from custom American oak barrels, while a subtle note of peak smoke from the Ardbeg arrives like an unexpected gift. The finish is every bit as rich and creamy and sweet as the treat that inspired it.

New sherry finished Ardnahoe on TW concierge, no age statement that I see but at 60 bucks im going to give it a shot at 100 proof

The Whisk[e]y Wash nailed it in their review, calling it "a great example of a 'peat-sweet' whisky": "With notes of sherried fruits and chocolate, the Oloroso sherry cask maturation is evident," it went on to say, "but effectively balanced by waves of earthy peat and smoke … [and] for the age there's plenty of complexity between layers of peat and sweetness."

Glenmorangie's latest "Tale" is up on Total Wine concierge, A Tale of Spices. Not going to lie, this sounds pretty good so my order is in.

Another ingenious creation from the restless mind of Bill Lumsden, aka Dr. Bill, aka the Willy Wonka of whisky, aka Glenmorangie's Director of Whisky Creation, and folks, it doesn't just transport you it's literally a trip. Employing a quartet of not one, not two, not three, but four cask finishes (Moroccan red wine, new charred oak, Pedro Ximnez, and shaved toasted red wine casks), it drinks like Dr. Bill raided a spice bazaar and decided to bottle the whole damn thing for his own giddy pleasure. We thrilled to the notes of rose, saffron, ginger, and eucalyptus as evocative and transportive a whisky as you're ever going to find. One sip and you're wandering through the souks of Marrakech … the next, and you're haggling over cardamom in Istanbul. This is whisky as passport, as magic carpet escapism.

TW Concierge has a new Aberfeldy 15 year old offering up. I will pass on this as my spend has been up a bit but sharing nevertheless, even if only 75 bucks

OUR TASTING NOTES: MacLeod has shown us all, yet again, how secondary maturation can elevate rather than mask a whisky's essential character. The Bolgheri influence is pronounced, and asserts itself from the very start, as notes of dark cherries, juicy plums, and subtle oak play counterpoint to Aberfeldy's signature honeyed character. As the experience unfolds, chocolate and vanilla notes come to the fore, providing richness and depth, while a hint of nutmeg emerges in the background, adding an unexpected note of spice and warmth. The finish delivers just the right hint of soft oak: enough to lend dimension, not enough to overtake the fruit.

Its not on the TW Concierge website but they sent out an email for a 15 year old sherry cask series Kilchoman, 20th anniversary edition, saying they only got 100 bottle allocation so I snagged one. Check your inbox

Having a pour of this again right now. Like it a bit better now, I bet it opened up a bit after the neck pour. Seems better balanced and I dig the contrasting going on. Could also just be a change in my palate from when I tried it last.

New to this thread. Started loving Scotch after a trip to Scotland 4 years ago. It's really intruded on our wine drinking. I want to slog my way through this thread, as we're still pretty much neophytes. I enjoy just buying something and trying it, so the numbers of bottles increases.

Lagavulin 16 is probably my "house Scotch" although Laphroig Quarter Cask is close. That being said, my wife's goto is Glenn Allachie 15 - which is damn near sweet to me, but I do enjoy it.

Looking for any insight or recommendations. As a wine guy, Scotch is so fun. A $100 bottle of wine is gone in a couple of hours, whereas a $100 bottle of Scotch lasts (a little bit) longer!

Two offerings today from TW Concierge

First up is The Macallan A Night On Earth 'At First Light', 43% ABV for $129.97

"This naturally colored whisky shines with a deep golden sand hue. On the nose, it offers rich caramel and hints of fried icing sugar, evoking Christmas pavlova and a touch of coconut, followed by a fleeting note of Manuka honey a nod to its Antipodean character. The palate is indulgent and layered, featuring rich caramel, mellow baking spices, vanilla ice cream, pavlova, icing sugar, stone fruits, and subtle traces of coconut and Manuka honey. The finish is sweet and fruity, with mellow spice and toasted oak."
- The Macallan

Second is Highland Park Cask Strenght: Heather, 63.6% ABV for $84.97

"Crafted with 100% Orkney peat-smoked barley, it delivers the most pronounced heather character in the range. On the palate, it opens with rich notes of charred marshmallow, creamy macadamia nuts, and indulgent brandy butter, layered with toasted oak and enveloped in aromatic heathered peat smoke. The whisky's multi-layered profile is further elevated by intense sherry sweetness, creating a powerful yet smooth and harmonious balance of fragrance and flavor."
- Highland Park

I grabbed the Macallan just to keep my A Night On Earth vertical intact, did not get the Highland Park as it's not really my jam.

How can I get the A Night on Earth? Absolutely loved my one bottle. It was limited edition and I can't find it anywhere?

Looks like it was A Night on Earth in Jerez.

Is this something they do every year?

Yessir, new editions each year for new years eve, this one is the 4th rendition, Night On Earth Jerez was last year's release. Still see a couple Jerez every now and then, but that's around Houston so no help to you.

Total Wine has a separate website, Total Wine Concierge, you can sign up for emails from them for pre-order stuff (like the 2 I posted). Free to sign up, can link to your Total Wine account should you have one, but doesn't matter if you don't. Then if you see something of interest to you, you put your order in at the store you want to pick up from that'sin a drop down list online. Closest to you is probably Bee Cave or La Cantera locations should you wish to buy and venture over when they tell you it's ready.

Thanks! Yeah, I'm on the concierge list. Used to buy a ton of BDX from Total, but go through a broker for most everything now. Plus, at 70, I'm kinda out on buying wine I gotta hang on to for 10 years.

I'll buy several bottles next time. Saw a Jerez for $400 online! Just nuts.

La Cantera is my store. I've just read the emails, will have to check out the site.

Edit: Ordered some of both! This is gonna be fun...
