I don't know if this actually provides a benefit but it sure seems easy and like it would work.

Don't see why it wouldn't work. Your outdoor unit is a giant heat exchanger, a big change in shade would reduce the temperature on the unit and allow for more effective heat transfer. Wouldn't do anything unless your unit sat in the blazing afternoon sun.

Solar Radiation is a thing. The air temperature you read is the temp in the shade. Being in the sun can add 20-50F (depending on the solar radiation and such) to the surface temperature.

So shading a unit can 'help' lower power. Instead of condensing against 150F, you're condensing against 110F in the heat of the day/summer (100F air temp). For R410A, that's a difference in pressure of ~620 psig vs. ~368 psig ( a 252 psig reduction).

The lower pressure also means when it flashes in the evaporator, you get more liquid instead of just cold gas. Liquid going to gas is where 'the heat transfer' is (aka, where the meat is) when cooling down the house.

Also means less amperage on the motor, which is less power. Less power, less money.

We employ deciduous trees for shade that don't shed much.

Not sure how much it would help my unit as it is on the north side of the house with an overhang already. I doubt it gets much sun, even in June/July. I need to look this year.

What would be a good tree choice for BCS? My AC unit gets full afternoon sun.

IMHO we may not be the Crape Myrtle Capital but many think we are, as so many do very well here + So many height options for shade, flower colors, higher-PH OK, a bit drought tolerant, etc. Have only a nursery man custom select the type from photos you provide.

That said, long lived - even volunteering in unmoxed areas - shade trees for black thumbs & our sodium waters have been
  • Cedar Elms
  • Chinese Pistache
  • Yaupons
  • Live & Pin Oaks a distance away ideal as a 2nd planting since they take so long to grow, future shade for the HVAC w/o threatening the roof (food for thought for all tree options)
That said, any tree near the roof becomes a squirrel path.

I already have 2 huge oaks in front that are a squirrel path so it does not matter.

Rare solutions include a vertical lattice upon which vines & roses grow between setting summer sun & HVAC ~6pm if not blocking the breezes

I used to hose spray the shaded but hard working unit upon quitting work but then we got a Trane variable ....

So are these actually legit? Seems too good to be true considering it's such an easy solution.
