Howdy All!

Last year, three quarters of my lawn died. The dead grass was removed and replaced with new sod.

This year I have another dead spot growing and I want to fix this before I have to replace the sod, again.

The lawn is St. Augustine and located in Galveston. The dead area is in full sun, weeds will grow in the brown spot (they were pulled yesterday so that they won't take over the area), and you can easily lift the dead runners from the ground. I have a sprinkler system but have only used it 2-3 times this year. It typically rains once every 5-10 days.

I've already treated with Scotts DiseaseeX four weeks ago. The spot is a bit bigger but the grass in the area has almost completely died out and isn't reqrowing. I have a bottle of BioAdvanced Fungus Control for Lawns ready to apply if it might help.

Pictures are here.

What can I do to stop the spread of the dead area, how can I get the grass to regrow in the dead area, and how do I prevent this from happening again?

Thanks for your help!

Fungus is ubiquitous is southeast Texas, about the only thing you can do is treat every year or give up on that cultivar of sod.

On fungicide, make sure you follow the reapplication interval. Never trust your lawn is cured with one application. Not reapplying can lead to disease resistance.

Make sure to rotate mode of action using the FRAC codes. Using the same mode of action over and over again leads to disease resistance.

Make sure you are using best practices when it comes to watering. Avoid watering between dusk-dawn, especially now that cooler overnight temperatures have arrived.

So the trick is to alternate between two or three different chemicals.

How often should they be applied?

sounds like take all patch or brown patch...Use a systemic fungicide like heritage G or one from infuse.

I usually apply the first round mid-September, then a follow up application 2 weeks later. I'll do a second round mid/late-October with a follow up application 2-weeks later.

Sounds and looks more like chinch bugs than fungus

If I see an issue like this in the yard, I usually hit it with fungus and grub control at the same time then repeat in two weeks. It can move too fast to guess and find out which one it was.

Only thing I'll add is I bought the liquid form of Heritage G and it was far less expensive per treatment and more effective. I rotated that and Eagle 20 EW every two weeks and it took care of my fungus issues.

I'm almost positive that picture you shared is cinch bugs. go look right at the edge of the brown/green grass. If you see some small white bugs in there spray asap

Thanks to all for y'all's advice.

The lawn has been treated for grubs and fungus.

Since this is the second year that I've fought this fight, would it be advisable to hit the lawn preemptively treat for both fungus and grubs at the beginning of September next year? (I'm in Galveston with a st augustine lawn.)
