Read the room. The guy was in the fairway 30 yards past your fairway bunker shot…that you finally made it to after picking up other balls.


There is a chance the Marshall and the kid thought you sucked at golf and needed to be taught a lesson!

I just started to pick up golf 2 years ago. Not great, getting better, still learning some of the rules. I am out there to be respectful, learn the game, have fun. People do dumb stuff but I don't let it bother me.

I have had people hit balls that got close to me too but would never let that ruin my round. Unless you are the 0.001% professional, why get mad over the little stuff. If you are the 0.001% professional, you should not be playing where I am playing.

I had the strangest encouter myself yesterday... as I was pulling up to Gus Wortham a guy was on the ground having a seizure.

We called 911 and he was fine after coming to + EMS support.

Wild way to start your round.

So I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one - big hitter, the Lama - long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga... gunga, gunga-lagunga.

I agree with you that he should not hit no matter what the starter said. If the starter told me I had it hit immediately, I would either hit is really short, or drop near the group.

But he didn't for whatever foolish reason. But it really isn't worth it. You can't fix all the dumb or irrational behaviors in this world and it is not my job to teach a grown man etiquette.

Personally, I would said WTH when the ball whizzed by and then ignore him the rest of the round. If he said another stupid thing or complained that I broke etiquette somehow, I would bring up his dumb move.

But really, not worth him taking any space in your head.

I may have mis-represented how the rest of my day went. I wasn't mad or uncomfortable once we let him go… but I did want to just arbitrarily hit while he was sitting in the fairway.

I guess I'm more of an Old Testament guy… eye for an eye and all.

As a side note, I played Gleannloch recently with three other Ags.

We didn't encounter any turds and I had a good time.

Yeah! The course is in good shape these days. New owners and the money they're putting into it really shows.

i played there recently. Got nervous reading until I read the person hit it over you. That wouldn't have been me.

I can see both sides to this as I've had a starter tell me to hit with the group in front still in the fairway. I was on vacation in Canada playing a new course with rental clubs and not wearing golf shoes. The starter assumed I was a beginner and told me to hit. I wasn't sure how far the group was in front of me and you can be fooled when playing a new course.

Of course I f'ing bomb one and it flew over the heads of the group in the fairway. The marshal then tells me I should've waited if I was going to hit one that far. I explained and apologized on the next tee box and everybody was cool.

In your explanation to the marshall, I sure hope you dropped a "I only hit bombs" for good measure.
