Headed to Morocco in a few months and will be staying in marrakesh for about five days. Anybody been and have any suggestions? I will have my kids ages 10-14 with me. Thanks!

Sounds interesting especially from a food perspective

The trips I've put together for folks include a handful days in Marrakech, combined with time in the mountains and other cities (Fez, Casablanca, etc.).

Usually my clients are spending a few days relaxing in their riad or hotel. Most common activities have been guided trips in the markets, camel & atv dessert rides, had one couple do an overnight camping experience in the dessert and one family do a hot air balloon ride over the Agafay dessert.

Most of the time they're using it as a hub for activities rather than activities in the city.

My wife and I visited 9 years ago. We stayed at a great hotel with a huge pool (La Mamounia), so we really enjoyed it.

We purposely didn't spend much time in the European area as they call it so we could experience the old city more. It's more modern and a bit more lax on alcohol and the like, so it's there if you tire of the rest.

I wish I could recall to make a specific recommendation, but we did a private tour of the city that was great. If they suggest visiting a tannery, beware it's probably the worst odor you've ever experienced in your life.

We went to the market area of the old city most days and on our own. The markets are a maze, but we had no issues navigating with our phones and never felt like we were had any real crime risk.

We took a private car over the Atlas mountains to the bitter edge of the Sahara. We road camels out there at one stop. Our ultimate destination was a place called Ait ben Haddou, an old oasis stop on the trading caravan routes. Look it up, really cool. They filmed scenes from Lawerence of Arabia and Gladiator there.

Finally, read up on the current popular scams happening there. We had a few attempts while touring the old city on our own so much, but we recognized them from our research before the trip.

ETA, we stayed about 4 or 5 nights and that was plenty. Then we went to the south of Spain for the rest of our trip.

Been there, actually backpacked solo around Morocco for 5 weeks, but that was 25 years ago, the spring before 9/11. No relevant current advice for you, lol, sorry.
