Does anyone have any recommendations or must does and places to visit for a honey moon in Italy? Flying in and out of Rome.

Let's be honest. Just about anything you'll do will be incredible. We loved some off the beaten path things including our stay in Santa margarita Ligure. The Italian riviera is great and still feels authentic.

You can create so many different honeymoon itineraries in Italy, so diverse!

How long will you be there? Mountains, beach, city?

Most of the ones I've planned recently have included either Sardinia or Lake Como / Dolomites region. Sicily is making a come back. Piedmont is on the up & up for wine trips. There are a bunch of vineyard hotels in Tuscany that are incredible.

What do you envision for your trip?

Last year I spend 18 days as a travel advisor in Italy. I have planned several trips to Italy for Texag clients . If you are not working with the travel advisor my contact is in my bio. Here are a couple pictures of some of the destinations I visited.

Agree with others you really can't go wrong. Places that were most memorable to me were the unique off the beaten path aspects of Rome like MIchaeleangelos tomb and its fascinating history and rivalry with Florence. Knights of Malta keyhole, a fun sidequest to see a unique view through the keyhole. Although touristy i think the Pantheon and Roman forum are worth it as well as the Vatican, for the art and history, especially Sistine Chapel and MIchaeleangelos masterpiece. Another touristy spot that i think is worth it is Trevi fountain, it has a romantic connection to the film La Dolce Vita and is an iconic scene of Rome.

We spent a few weeks in Italy for our honeymoon. I would recommended two nights in Venice. Yes, it can get crowded in the day, but the nights are magical as you drink wine along the canal and hear the water splash against the canal walls. A day trip to Murano was fun. We did a glass making class. Stepping off the train platform and seeing Venice for the first time was such an awesome sight!

We also rented a farmhouse in Tuscany for a week and did day trips from there: Sienna, Montalcino and Montepluciano for wine, San Gimingano, Pisa (total tourist trap but fun), and a day just relaxing on the farm. cooking and drinking stuff we bought at a local market.

Add in a few nights in Florence and Bellagio (really beautiful area) and you're set.

All that said, I'd love to go back and hit the southern areas, Cinque Terre, and some other towns that we didn't have time for. You just can't go wrong out there.

Enjoy!

if you do the Vatican museum, I recommend the Keymaster tour. You have to wake up early (before 6am), but to be the only ones in the museum and sistine chapel is pretty amazing. The tour is a small group (15 or so) and everybody gets to open a room, including the chapel (for that one, they let everybody in the group 're-enact' opening the door with the key). Turning on the lights in each room, etc.

April is the perfect time of year to go. I would definitely rent a car and do a Tuscany/Umbria road trip.

My wife and I went this past May, did a day trip out of Rome to Orvieto, a really neat little town to walk around. Hired a driver to take us to a winery (Decugnano dei Barbi) and did a wine tasting and cooking class - it was us two and one other couple from England. Was an awesome day, would highly recommend getting out of Rome for a day for something like that. Took a train there and back.

Our itenerary:
3 full days in Cinque Terre, great hiking between towns and trains run constantly between towns making things easy.
2 full days in Siena (with group wine tour through Montepulciano)
3 full days in Rome (with the day trip to Orvieto)
Travel days between cities gave us time to wander around not included in above.

We did not rent a car, found the train system to be good enough. Apple Maps was a savior for public transport in Rome, gave accurate times and walking directions for bus routes. Happy to share specifics if you want more details

As previously mentioned, Siena, Florence, and Cinque Terre are all worth a visit. The Italian riviera is a great place to visit as well. Santa Margherita Ligure is a good place to stay with easy access to Genoa and Portofino. I could spend a couple of days just hanging out at the dockside cafes drinking Vermentino and watching the yachts come in and out in Portofino.

Most major cities in Italy have substantial no-go zones that will get hefty fines delivered automatically to your rental car. You need to find the maps that show these and be careful, because even though they are marked with signs, it's easy to blow past them if you're not careful.

I drove there, but you have to be very careful about these zones and you basically can't drive to within walking distance of anything you want to see except maybe the Tower of Pisa. For Rome, I just parked at the airport and took a cab to my hotel by the Forum. For Florence I selected a Hotel outside the zone, but close to the local train and figure that out. I've heard people recommending not getting a car, because the train systems is so good. Then you'd have to pay for some tours to get off the main cities (I did that anyway for Venice and the Amalfi coast boat thing).

We will be there April 14-20th. We just need to figure out how to buy tickets to all the touristy attractions like the colosseum and Sistine chapel etc. anything else we will most likely go with the wind!

We work with some really great tour operators in Italy, and I'd love to help point you in the right direction for tours and activities that fit what you're looking for.

I know it can be frustrating trying to sort through all the options to figure out what's the best use of your time and money, so I'd be happy to make that part easy for you!

There are Rome in a day private tours that you can book. It was a long day, but we bypassed all of the lines and saw many of the highlights.

Definitely not a honeymoon, but just got back from 2 weeks in Italy. First four days in Positano on the Amalfi coast

Stayed in a fabulous AirBnB in Positano which prepared and served breakfast in our room every morning

4 days in Rome doing all the touristy things.

Finally, 4 days in Florence. Here we rented a car and drove all over Tuscany.

The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But, it's still on the list.

Thanks for the replies! We ultimately decided on staying at the inn at the Roman forum and do day trips out of Rome! Very excited!
