Looking for ideas for somewhere warmer and water (if possible). Southwest needs to be able to fly in or within an hours drive. Flights to Mexico and Costa Rica were too expensive....

That is a wildly busy time to travel and peak season for cold weather people to head south....

Phoenix area?

We've been to Puerto Rico twice in the last few years and had a blast. I didn't think we'll ever go back to Mexico...

Really busy time unfortunately. Cancun is going to be the cheapest place in all likelihood. Maybe Belize a close second but I'd expect the other destinations to be $800-$1000 for a nonstop.

Only if you are using St. Thomas to get to St. John or BVI's.

You could go to the Florida Keys, but you'd have to fly into Miami or Fort Lauderdale. Lots of traffic in the Keys during Christmas break.

You could do Marco Island or Naples. Fly into Fort Myers and rent a car.

The places I listed above could be highs of 80 or highs of 60 that time of year. Weather can be a crapshoot.

Puerto Rico is a good option as is St. John or St. Croix in USVI if you can get flights to work out.

Hawaii is super expensive over the holidays. Anywhere that is warm that time of year will be charging high rental rates. It is high season for the places I mentioned in Florida and the Caribbean.

Did you only check prices to Cancun when looking at Mexico? I've seen Southwest planes at Puerto Vallarta airport and at airport for Cabo in the past. Will be warmer in PV than Cancun or Cabo.

Does Southwest still fly to Aruba? You might look into vacationing there.

Our family does a cruise over Christmas each year. It's very relaxing to not have to worry about cooking and cleaning.
