We just booked our flight to Calgary for the end of July. Banff is a place my son has wanted to go for a long time, and I've wanted to play golf there since I was in college.

We are there for a week. (Me, Wife, 14 son, 12/10 daughters). The glacier stuff looks cool, whitewater rafting is something we enjoy. The gondola looks fun.

Are there any things that are a waste to do or things that are must do items?

I'm assuming you have a rental car. Expect a lot of driving.

Don't waste your time on the gondola. $60 a person. Meh.

Everything is epic. Bring good hiking/walking shoes and don't skimp out just because the hike may be 7km. Do it.

Lake Louise and Moraine are beautiful but filled with tourists. Do all the hikes at Louise to get away from the tourists in their Gucci loafers. If you've not already booked shuttle tickets for those two, look up when last minute tickets go on sale. Otherwise, you've got an absolutely insane walk ahead of you or you'll need to get to the very limited parking lots by like 4:30am…or earlier.

Athabasca glacier is really cool. Icefields Parkway from Lake Louise to Jasper is stunning. Make sure you fill up at the only station on the route.

Awesome, thanks! We will have a rental car for sure. Good advice on the gondola. We are talking about doing Athabasca falls and rafting (3 hours) then hitting up the glacier tour afterwards.

Kind of a spur of the moment trip so making sure we are efficient with our time.

our family loved the gondola hike - yes there are people but it was really pretty and gave a great view at the top

Go out of your way to Moraine Lake - get there early to beat the crowds but it's the BEST

Don't miss Peyto Lake - easy hike to get there and the most iconic photo!
Emerald Lake - serene and beautiful

Banff town is super crowded so you might pass through

Moraine Lake

Peyto Lake on a cloudy day... sunny is amazing - google it

Supposedly there are some other courses that are better than banff Fairmont, but the views from the course were unreal

You're getting a LOT of really good suggestions on this thread. A couple of suggestions, I'd make:

Athabasca Glacier - talk to these guys - https://www.icewalks.com/. This was probably the most memorable part of our trip for me. You CAN visit Athabasca Glacier on your own and they do have buses that go out onto the glacier, but if you're physically able - this is a better way to go.

Emerald Lake - I love Lake Louise (and will say more about it below) but if you want a lake that's a bit LESS crowded where you can kayak or canoe without a massive wait, I'd make a trip up here. Gorgeous water and a LITTLE easier to get to than Lake Louise, but it gets crowded, as well.

Lake Louise - We did one of the Tea House hikes. I'd highly suggest these to get away from the crowds around the Lake itself. We did the one that goes up Lake Agnes and it was a memorable (and reasonable) hike. Also, you will not be able to drive up to Lake Louise and just park. You will likely need to find some shuttle service to et you there. Many of the private shuttle services are just glorified tour buses and won't stay at Lake Louise long enough for you to do a substantial hike. I think the municipal one is probably the best but tickets sell out. We ended up going with this one - https://wowbanff.com/ which gave us plenty of time to hike at Lake Louise.

We did this trip last summer but spent a few days up in Jasper (before the fires) and really enjoyed that, as well. This is probably among the most beautiful sightseeing I've ever experienced. I'll also say that Calgary is probably a great place to live, but it's not really a tourist destination.

Banff springs is great course and it is up there as one of my most memorable rounds ever. The views are stunning. I also suggest bringing your own clubs if possible. When I played a few years back I rented from them and all were graphite shafts if that matters to you. May want to call and check. Silvertip golf course is near Banff and is awesome as well.

Must hikes are tea houses and little/big beehive at lake Louise. Peyto lake is a must as well.

We didn't do rafting but I bet it is awesome up there.

Have fun. Most beautiful place I've ever seen.

Any restaurant recommendations for Calgary? Heading up there next week for the Stampede.

The River Cafe on Prince Island Park is a great setting and has very nice wild game. Teatro Ristorante on 1st & 8th Ave is in a nice old building with good character and great food. And Stampede is great, you will have a fun time. It used to be Mardi Gras type crazy in the good ole days, but now it's just normal fun.

Thanks! Silvertip will be my second if I get to play two days. Which I probably won't. I plan to take clubs because when I was in Spain I rented some and they were made for like elderly people - I could feel them bending so much. Combine that with no range finder in yards, having to step off meters for distances…made it difficult lol. But that was a work trip and taking clubs and luggage on trains probably would've been worse.

I didn't get to do the rapids when we went as I was recovering from a broken collarbone, but my family had a blast.

Two summers ago we spend a week in Banff! Truly a pen of a kind destination. If you are looking for recommendations for rafting, hiking, restaurants or private guides my email is in my bio.

What's funny is everyone always post photos like these but people think they are fake. 100% it looks just like that.

Can't wait to go back and take my kids there one day when they are a little older to appreciate it.

Just got back from 10 days between Banff and Jasper. Havent even gone through the pictures yet.

A few notes:
  • Sunshine Village Gondola >>> Banff Gondola

  • Moraine Lake and Lake Louise are a must do. Get a reservation and park at the park and ride.

  • If you're up for it, do the Lake Louise hike up to the teahouse, and then the big beehive. You could spend all day hiking out there if you want to go futher.

  • Marble Canyon is a cool place to check out that's nearby.

  • If you go up to the Icefields, go with IceWalks (https://www.icewalks.com/) instead of the dumb bus that let's you look from the parking lot.

  • A few quick hitters with immediate payoffs: Peyto Lake Viewpoint, Athabasca Falls

There's a lot closed at Jasper. But they need the visitors badly. I mean, this is when the town makes their money.

Several of the big trails are still completely shutdown: Valley of the Five Lakes, Edith Cavell, Maligne Canyon. They're all burnt out and deemed unsafe until the crews clear the trees. They seemed to be working around the clock clearing the burn.

I'd expect Cavell might be opened by the end of the summer. It's gonna take some time on those other two areas.

Here's a view from the Maligne Overlook:

They've levelled and cleared most of the burnt buildings and homes in town, but haven't begun rebuilding much. There's a bunch of temporary housing setup as you come into town. Still, there is plenty open to serve the tourists and locals. You've got plenty of options for restaurants, shops, and all the conveniences you'll want. It won't impact your experience in that way. The locals have said they've not seen much wildlife coming through town since the fire. I did see a ton of elk on my runs out around Twin Lakes though.

It's still a beautiful area. You can be out at Maligne Lake or Pyramid Lake and be completely removed from the burnt areas. But it's definitely a different vibe in town and driving around. It was still a great time. The mountains and lakes are gorgeous. And I appreciate the lower key Jasper townsite more than touristy Banff.

Driving out to Maligne Lake, you'll see the area around Medicine Lake that was burned in 2015. And 10 years later, the area still looks pretty freshly burned. The growing season in that area is so short that it takes much longer to heal. This 2024 fire has changed the landscape for a long, long time.

I hate to hear that about Maligne Canyon. That was my favorite hike when we visited a few years ago. I hope they get it cleared and open soon.

With that said, there is a certain beauty in visiting an area that has been damaged by fire. On that same trip, we did the Marble Canyon hike (also damaged by a fire), and it was really beautiful, just in a different way. We've since been back twice in the winter, and it's even more beautiful. The contrast between the darkened, burned areas and the white snow is visually stunning.

As sad as it is to see the damage from the fires, it doesn't make a visit any less enjoyable.

My biggest concern about Jasper would be places to stay/lodging. There weren't a lot of options when we visited and I know where we stayed (Tekarra Lodge) is still closed from the fires and will be for some time because it was heavily damaged.

One more suggestion - if the road is open (and it should be by now), make the trip to Takakkaw Falls. We missed out on this because the road wasn't open, but it looks beautiful.

Agreed. Takakkaw Falls is beautiful.

We took time to visit all of the surrounding National Parks. We were at Takakkaw Falls early in the morning and had the place to ourselves. Paired that with Wapta, then made our way through Glacier and out to Revelstoke.

And yeah, Tekarra Lodge is closed. They've got it completely roped off with "no trespassing" signs. I did some running out there through the scorched trees. That's where I saw all the elk. Also, the wildflowers are thriving in the area. So, yeah, it's a different kind of beauty.

Really appreciate all the advice on the board. My 2 older teenagers and I went end of July and followed the advice on here and had a fantastic time. Just as beautiful as the pictures if not more. Thanks!
