Worth it? Looking for cooler weather, rafting, and a little golf.

yes, Taos is nice in the summer. It has all that you are looking for. We usually stay in Red River, and do Taos for a day trip.

this is how I would do it. Red River is a great town. But less "stuff" than Taos. So it depends on your vibe a little.

Also Red River will have a lot of side by sides on the weekends. Less so during the week. On a holiday weekend it will be choked with them. Do not recommend.

We are headed to Angel fire in 3 weeks. I'm worried about the rafting we have scheduled. Water levels seem to be super low in the rio grande

There were a lot of rafts on it this week, but from the highway, it did look low. Again, based on the number we saw on the river, it's still doable.

It is the desert, so days can be hot, but nights should be cool. Angel fire is nice, though Red River is my favorite playground.

Stop in Cimmaron at the St James hotel. Drove from Cimmaron to Eagle Nest is beautiful. Drive from EN past the first Vietnam War Memorial to Taos is pretty. We enjoy both the high bridge on the Rio Grande and the low bridge. Kids usually enjoy the fish hatchery at Questa.

Somebody help me out, what's the area to the north of RR that has elk, and supposed to be real pretty?

It's only an hour drive from Taos to catch the Cumbres and Toltec scenic RR. Well worth the ride. Takes most of a day, I'd ride train one direction, bus the other

3 weeks past peak flow on a year with 14% snow pack is like 11 weeks in raft years.

It's 399 cu ft / s right now at Taos. Thats 25% percentile for this day over the last 40 years.

Taos in July can be pretty nice, definitely cooler than a lot of places thanks to the elevation. Rafting's solid on the Rio Grande, and the scenery is awesome. Golf-wise, there are some good courses with great mountain views. If you want a chill, outdoorsy vibe without scorching heat, it's worth checking out. Just be ready for occasional afternoon thunderstorms!

Go to this area for a week or more in the summer for the last 20+ yrs.
Did a week trip 6/28 - 7/5 with Red River as base.
Fished Valle Vidal on opening day, 7/1. Wasn't too crowded. Second year in a row. Went back again this year b/c son liked it so much last year and I had no argument. Lots of fishing - light on catching this time. Barbless hooks required in "red chile" water. Hard to beat the scenery.
Visited the Vietnam memorial this year and got some stories out of my FIL, who joined us. Good exhibit in a great location.
Day trip over to Taos, usually for food / shopping sometimes a raft trip (not this year). Guadalajara Grill (south location) and Orlando's for NM style Mex food. Try Pizza Out Back on occasion but remember you are on New Mexico time, and service is spotty everywhere, especially this place. Lower your expectations and you'll get along fine. Angel Fired PIzza was good.
Was cooler this week than typical for early July, but rain most days will do that.
Saw less wildlife than usual. Hit or miss.

Great trip and the fam loves the area, which is why we keep going back.
