Any feedback on the skiing during Texas spring break? Is it crowded ? I haven't been there in 20 years, so I have no idea. Thinking about driving up from austin.

Interested in hearing responses because we're doing Taos for SB from Austin too. Have never skied Taos and in fact haven't skied at all in almost 20 years!

Hard to say. Taos will probably be ok but anywhere in NM the snow conditions can get iffy in the spring.

See you on the slopes. Taking SWA to ABQ and finishing the drive.

Hoping you are not a beginner skier. Taos is one big bowl and the greens are like blues everywhere else.

Have heard this about their greens. When I used to go semi-regularly I was a solid blue guy. Could survive a black now and then but honestly had no business on them.

My 15yr old has never skied so getting a full day lesson our first day then sounds like we may be sticking to the greens with his inexperience and my rustiness.

I'd opt for Wolf Creek instead if you're fine with having to drive to the resort everyday and adding about 2 hours to the trip.
Basically guaranteed better snow conditions.

Taos has plenty of beginner terrain. I actually learned to ski there. It's like people telling you not to go to Crested Butte or BC because of the grade.

but Red River or AF wouldn't be a bad idea instead…

In terms of snow, Taos has a 50+ inch base. That's deeper than Breck and Keystone atm.

Steamboat is leading the CO snowpack this season by a LONG shot.

I've skied Taos once and with my experience at ski Santa Fe would not have kids learn their first time at Taos. But I LOVE Santa Fe so take it with a grain of salt.

We spend a lot of time in Santa Fe every year and love skiing there. My kids learned there and their greens are easy. It is never crowded, even on the "busy" weeks. We've skied spring break plenty of years and it's ok. Lower down can get slushy but higher on the mountain is fine.

We will be there for SB coming from central Texas too. They currently have a 56inch base.

where in sante fe do you stay? Wife is high maintenance and though she doesnt have to have the Ritz, something close to it would be nice.

It's ok man. You said "wife".... the high maintenance was redundant.

We have a home in SF. But for downtown hotels you can't go wrong with La Posada, Inn of the Governors, La Fonda, Inn at Loretto, El dorado.

Taos will have the best snow condition in New Mexico at SB. Always does. I would avoid Red River and Angel Fire at that time of year. Harder mountain? Yes, though it's been made friendlier under new ownership. Exceptional ski school. Learn there, everywhere else will feel easy.

Also, don't miss the opportunity to go fishing in shirtsleeves on the Rio or lower Red one day while you're there. Pretty fun to ski and fly fish on the same trip!

Taos is the only place in NM worth skiing. And it is very good. That said, if your spring break is the second full week of march it will be way too crowded and you should stay home

edit: ignore the "don't learn at taos" posts. The difference between the "steep" greens at taos and the "flat" greens somewhere else is a couple degrees, which you aren't even aware of if you have never been anywhere else. And the ski school at Taos is >>>>>>> than anywhere else in NM.
