3 time AL MVP and perennial strikeout contender Aaron Judge went through the entire 2025 season without wearing the Golden Sombrero.

In 2026 it took him 4 at bats. Strikeouts are for everyone!

Somewhere out there King Donkey is eating chili cheese fries and smiling.

Last season's strikeout king, James Wood, has an outstanding start to the season with the first sombrero by an NL player.

After coming up a heartbreaking 2 Ks short of the all time record last year, Wood already looks to be in midseason form. He's the best we've seen since the Donk was taken from us.

One of the great and tragic ironies of baseball last season was watching the Washington Gnats, of all teams, embracing the importance of the strikeout position. The Gnats are the franchise that cruelly misused King Donkey in his last major league season, constantly burying his talents deep in the lineup and subjecting him to the tremendously unfair "platoon," in which he was only allowed to strike out against right handed pitching.

The Gnats appear to have turned over a new leaf last year with wunderkind James "Not James Woods, James Woods is a White Boy" Wood. By the antiquated "traditional" approach, having a guy who is 6 foot 6 and struck out 221 times last year lead off would seem like an odd choice. And the outdated "sabermetric" analysts would view Wood's .077/.143/.308 (OPS+ 27) start as "concerning".

Amazingly, the Gnats seem to have realized what really matters: strikeouts. By showing his teammates where the ball isn't, Wood allows them to determine where the ball is, so they can hit it. It is magnificent in its simplicity.

Wood has hit leadoff in every game and struck out 7 times in 13 at bats (whiff percentage .538). The Gnats, gnaturally, are off to a 2-1 start.

At last year's Twins home opener, I got to see Astros second baseman and greatest hobbit in baseball history, Jose Altuve, claim a Platinum Sombrero.

Another year, another opener and once again I SAW A PLATINUM SOMBRERO!! This year's high achiever, Matt Wallner of the Twins, is one of the usurpers who Rockhead Baldelli promoted to steal King Donkey's rightful place in the Twins outfield.

Here's his magic moment. Look at that form!!

Last year, Cal "The Big Dumper" Raleigh and "Captain" Aaron Judge combined to clobber 113 home runs, in what was widely regarded as a vulgar display of power. This year, however, these two titans seem to be turning over a new leaf, trading the sizzle of "dingers" for the steak of the humble, hardworking strikeout. So far, they have combined to go 14 for 74 with 3 home runs (all by Judge) and 33 big strikeouts, including a Major League leading 20 for the Dumper! A round of applause for these lunch pail warriors for reminding us, as always, that strikeouts are for everyone!

Elsewhere in the big leagues, there were some impressive strikeout feats including the Platinum Sombrero for Matt Wallner of the Twins and a 6 strikeout day for Ian Happ of the Cubs during Sunday's doubleheader.

Raleigh leads the race for the strikeout crown at the 1/16 pole, with all of the usual suspects including "Big Game" James Wood, Kyle Schwarber, and Elly De La Cruz lurking inside the top 12. The year is off to an exciting start!

Sombrero Watch (March 30-April 5)
Austin Hays, CWS (3-30, v MIA)
Roman Anthony, BOS (3-31, v HOU): Leadoff sombrero!
Matt Wallner, MIN (4-3, v TB)
Kazuma Okamoto, TOR (4-3, v CWS)
Fernando Tatis, Jr., SD (4-4, v BOS): Leadoff sombrero!
Ian Happ, CHC (4-5, v CLE)
Samuel Basallo, BAL (4-5, v PIT)
Luke Raley, SEA (4-5, v LAA): Leadoff sombrero!

Note: Platinum sombreros indicated in bold.

Strikeout leaders (individual)
1. Cal Raleigh, C, SEA: 20
2. Jorge Soler, RF, LAA: 18
2. Ian Happ, LF, CHC: 18
2. Matt Wallner, RF, MIN: 18
4. Trevor Story, SS, BOS: 17
4. James Wood, LF, WAS: 17
4. Kazuma Okamoto, 3B, TOR: 17

Strikeout leaders (team)
1. California Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim: 108
2. Seattle Mariners: 104
3. Oakland Las Vegas Zombie Athletics of Sacramento: 99
3. Colorado Rockies: 99

It was an ugly scene in Anaheim as rightfielder Jorge Soler of the California Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim took exception to a high fastball from Atlanta Braves' pitcher Reynaldo Lopez and then charged the mound in a delayed fashion, instigating a fistfight.

It was impressive to see Soler show off the elite lack of hand eye coordination that has him in the top 5 in the season strikeout race, throwing a series of looping punches that connected with nothing but air. After Lopez hit him on the batting helmet with a baseball, Soler completed the indignity by getting tackled by the other team's manager.

All in all, it was an ugly night for baseball and a disappointment for those of us who admire strikeout artistry. Soler will be suspended for multiple games and fall out of the lead pack. You can't strike out if you're not on the field.

Video of the unfortunate events here.

There was a Rangers game recently where the opponent pitching only struck out four batters. When I read the box score my first thought was 'hell I should have watched. Must have been a good game.'

I know that thought process goes against the spirit of the thread, but the fact that only four strikeouts by one side automatically makes me think it was a good game is something new for me.
