Have any of you tried essential amino acid supplements?

I saw a podcast recently where a guy said that they make a huge impact on muscle growth when you are in your 40s or older. I was thinking about trying them out but wanted to see what people here think of them. I tried searching but didn't find a good existing thread.

Yeah they aren't magical. But def a must have staple if trying to build muscle, like creatine etc.

I use unmatched supps brand. I make a big drink of that and sip intraworkout. I also take Beverley dessicated liver pills and mass amino pills during workout as well. It does make a big difference when I take them during workouts.

I haven't taken aminos since I was in high school (I'm 49 now). I never found them particularly beneficial. As long as you are getting plenty of protein, I don't really see the point. Most supplements are a waste of money. The only exceptions being creatine and protein powder. That's just been my experience over the years.

There's a 191 amino acid supplement out there that is pretty effective at building and maintaining muscle.

This is the podcast clip I was watching. He talks about it helping a lot more as you get older in the last 3 minutes.



I started trying to get healthy 5 months ago and I was in really bad shape when I started. I am down 40 pounds and I have put on a lot of muscle and strength but the last few weeks I feel like I have plateaued on some of my lifts. I don't know if it is the prolonged calorie deficit that is getting to me or if I even need to change anything but seeing his comments made me think I should try it. I currently eat 1 gram per pound of ideal body weight of protein a day from whole foods. I take a protein shake maybe once every two weeks when I am too busy to cook my protein.

I have been on creatine for 4 months. That is my only supplement so far.

I don't think it's worth it, personally. I'd rather just spend that money on protein or creatine. There's probably some benefit, but I just don't think it's worth it.

It's useful if you're cutting and don't want the additional calories of more protein but want to get the benefit of the aminos to prevent muscle loss.

I still have another 20 to 30 pounds to lose so I am still on this long term cut.

Yeah, I'm personally not sold that there is a real world significant difference between a cut on it and a cut without it. You're still getting calories from the amino acids, but I suppose there may be a slight advantage to eliminating the calories from the non-essential amino acids. Perhaps if on an extreme calorie deficit might be worth it, but from personal experience, and what data I have seen, probably not.

Most amino acid supplements only provide some, not all essential amino acids to build muscle. They really serve no use unless you aren't eating amount protein or are a vegan or something where you aren't getting enough diverse protein sources in your diet.

Eat real food. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. So all you are doing is eating highly processed food. Again... eat real food.

Second this, but with a twist

Anyone selling you essential amino acids is *******izing a concept to extract money from you with ZERO benefit beyond hitting your overall protein goal

Trying to "optimize-max' your health routine by buying EAA's is chasing your tail. A bag of Quest protein chips tastes WAY better and will have the EXACT same type of amino acids you're looking for. Or like Hoosegow said, eat more whole protein sources. Whatever works consistently

I tend to agree, with the caveat that if your testosterone levels are in the tank, even resistance training and diet aren't going to accomplish much. You may stay lean, but actually building muscle will be very difficult (I won't say impossible).
