I will go to Reynosa and on occasion Matamoros. But the bridge wait times aren't worth it if you have no reason to go other than shopping. I had to pick up some medicine for my father a few months ago and decided to walk across to Progreso on a Saturday. It was right when Trump was hammering Mex in the news. MF'er, the Mexicans decided to start checking everyone coming in that day. It took me an hour and half of standing on that bridge to get into Mex, it was a PIA. The bridge folks wouldn't let you turn around and walk back.
If you go during the week it should be no problem. Progreso is about 15-25% more expensive than Matamoros and Reynosa and I usually do several things over there when I go so I try to make it worth the wait coming back.
Sadly Matamoros really offers no shopping and stuff any more close to the bridge and all the good eating places are gone. About the same with Reynosa but the options there are better. Progreso has that strip where all kinds of things are in one place.
