Eldon, Janelle, Annie, Matt, Ann…who else?

Dr Gosh was a fixture.

I didn't start going to Kay's until 1996, which, not coincidentally, was when I started my nearly 18 year run at KTRK... during that time, I pretty much lived at the place.

I was always told that the hole in the garage door of the auto shop across the east alley, out the Kay's side door at the end of the bar, was the result of Eldon randomly discharging a shotgun. I had no trouble believing that. :-)

Speaking of Eldon, randomly, there'e a picture of him for sale on eBay.

Dave was a great guy and great journalist. He truly cared about the viewers and making sure what he delivered on the news each night was fact-checked and correct. He was a true pro, and honestly, one of the nicest people you could ever meet.

During my nearly 10 years at 13, Dave always had the Astros game on at his desk, and he was meticulous about going through scripts. If he called you out on something -- it was definitely for a reason.

Fun story about Ward -- I was filling in and producing the 10pm one night -- Coog97 may remember this. I'd only been at the station for about a year -- so I hadn't worked with Dave a whole lot. The Rockets were on a lengthy winning streak, and we had a live crew at Toyota. The EP told me about 4 minutes before the newscast to throw in a live picture at the top of the show, so I put it in the rundown. It was supposed to be read by Dave.

Now, some back story here -- Dave wanted a hard copy of EVERYTHING. He wanted that paper when he was on the desk. He didn't like going unscripted or off bullet points from the prompter. He didn't trust it. So -- he wanted copy written and on paper for the 10-second live picture of Toyota.

With it being so close to air, and managing final checks for the newscast -- I got a couple sentences in the prompter, but Dave didn't get hard copy. He got to the live look right after headlines and stumbled a bit. When we got to the first reporter story, his mic was turned off. He then proceeded to read me the riot act from the studio. He said it looked like "hammered horse*****" He was mad -- because he didn't like going in unprepared and thought viewers deserved the best. I apologized to him -- explained I was just following management orders -- and we proceeded on with the show. I think Dave was fuming for the rest of the first block.

After the show, I went out into the studio to talk to him. Dave was totally cool. He had completely let it go, understood what happened, and was supportive -- because he knew we were all a team. That meant a lot to me as I was working to find my footing in a top 10 TV market. I asked him how everything was -- and he said, as he often did, "Good program!"

But that was Dave! Passionate, driven, great guy at heart. I always appreciated his commitment. I learned a lot from him on the finer points of how to be a journalist.

I had grown up watching him on TV, so it was a complete treat to be able to work with him on a regular basis. I did the 6:30pm show with him for more than a year and filled in on several other 10pms -- too many to count. I got to produce the specialty coverage of the last shuttle launch with Dave -- and that was a great experience too!

Rest in peace, Dave. You'll always be the man!

another Dave story. I was in the Dome that night in 1974 when Dave almost died racing in a celebrity motocross race during the SuperCross event. Most of the competitors were taking it easy but not Dave, he was flying around the track and ended up going over the front handlebars after a jump. I think he broke his pelvis in four places and had numerous other broken bones. He's actually sort of lucky he got to live another 51 years after that night - he could have easily died.

and whoever thought it was a good idea to put celebrities on motocross bikes and have them race probably got fired.
What do you boys want for breakfast BBQ ?.....OK Chili.

Haha! Perfect story, AP! Until the very end, Dave cared. He cared about our responsibility to the viewer and to get it right with what we went to air with. He was present in that newsroom… no three hour lunches. What might have come off to some as being overly particular was just him being a devoted guardian of our responsibility as journalists… back when that actually meant something. It wasn't that long ago. AgProdicer and I were blessed to have the experience to work closely with him.

Beyond that, I had the privilege of producing some of his "Dave Ward's Houston"' online segments after his on-air retirement, including interviews with Earl Campbell, Rudy T., and Dan Pastorini. He was all about Houston and its history.

My wife and I won a charity auction for a lunch with Dave. It was right before COVID so we delayed the lunch. After COVID his health had started declining and we didn't want to burden him.

Good evening, friends

Dang is Shara fryer the only one left?

Shara was almost the first one off the list. She was jogging with her dog and darted onto Weslayan right in front of me while I was driving to work one morning. Had to slam on my brakes to avoid hitting them both. She gave me a sheepish smile and a wave. I nearly had a heart attack.

Proud moment for me in, I think, 1983 St Patrick's Day Parade they got a live shot of me munching on candy. Just going to town. They then switched over to Dave who said "That kid is really enjoying himself!"

We got the tape sent to us, but unfortunately it was on Beta Max and we didn't have a player. Still have it somewhere…..

I know, cool starry bra.
